LA County Votes to Boycott Arizona
**Written by guest-blogger Doug Powers
After heated debate, Los Angeles County supervisors voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to boycott Arizona in response to the passage of its controversial illegal immigration law, a decision that came the same day the Los Angeles Unified School District condemned the law.
[...]
The boycott suspends county-funded travel to Arizona unless the county’s chief executive determines that county interests would be seriously harmed. It also calls for a report within two weeks on how the county might terminate contracts with Arizona-based companies and orders the divestiture of Arizona state and municipal bonds by the county’s pension fund. The county’s auditor-controller estimated that the county has spent about $122 million over the last five years on Arizona goods and services.
Should Los Angeles residents go stock up on candles? We’ll see.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will meet with with President Obama tomorrow, where Obama will probably make a predictable crack about how a “beer summit” with a “Brewer” would have been more appropriate, but after that, don’t expect the AZ guv to fall prey to what will be a laundry list of goodies her state will be offered to taper or get rid of the law (note to the White House: Unfortunately, Brewer isn’t as gullible as Bart Stupak — sorry).
Besides, “We’ll meet you in court” doesn’t sound like something said by a person who’s prepared to compromise.
Hopefully Brewer will also take the opportunity to read the actual law to Obama, if she can find a window of time when he’s not covering his ears and saying “la la la la I can’t hear you la la la!”

Were those 1200 troops sent to the AZ border last week issued paint ball guns?
I would love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation. Gov. Brewer has some gonads.
Doug–are his hands big enough to cover those ears?
For people who don’t believe in borders and fences, they sure are putting up a lot of borders and fences around Arizona.
Tolerance and respect is a one way street in Los Angeles.
I have a feeling that Gov. Brewer will get the same crud Gov. Jindal is getting in his state. You both are r’s and we do not help r states from this bho! This bho, ‘you do know Gov. Brewer, that lots and lots of illegals will be voting for me and the d’s so just deal with your states problem’.
L
I’ll just have to cruise Route 66 through Arizona this summer.
Can I book a room at the Wig Wam motel in Holbrook?
Arizona is #1 on my list of vacation choices. California (especially LA and SanFran) – not so much…
Either, or, or both would work.
Are we sure those 1200 troops are being sent to the BORDER, and not the Capitol or the Governor’s Mansion?
The first question she should ask him is “Have you read the law yet?”
If the Loser in Chief says no… or not completely… she should terminate the meeting until such time that he actually understands the subject that he’s suppose to discuss.
I’m sorry, but what the heck is a school district doing condemning any law?! They need to stick with condemning school violence, parental apathy, biased text books, low standards/performance, …
They’re not going anywhere near the border. They will help only with such things as “administrative work”.
Really. That’s it. They will not be guarding the border.
She should take a chart comparing the Federal law and the Arizona law.
“The boycott suspends county-funded travel to Arizona unless the county’s chief executive determines that county interests would be seriously harmed.”
Can’t we just get every government to boycott everywhere. No government travel unless serious harm would result, I’m cool with that.
Oh, this should be a riot. A contract is a contract. If they try this they will be paying Arizona firms damages in addition being compelled to honor the contracts.
The bonds are probably at the lowest rate they will see for the forseeable future. Selling now would cost them millions in lost revinue, and do absolutely zip to Arizona. Someone else will buy them.
That’ll teach ‘em. D’OH!
*I hope and pray that Gov. Brewer stands her ground against this little man called P-BO; She is doing the right thing by the citizens of her state; He is, of course, as planned, destroying our beloved country; Stand your ground Gov. Brewer, stand your ground!
*California is on its’ way to insolvency, in part, do to the state leaders being advocacy pimps for illegal alien amnesty; Let them die a slow death without any more of my money!
Will the Dodgers send anyone to the MLB All-Star Game? Will UCLA, USC, Cal boycott games at ASU or UofA? If the state decides to boycott AZ should we residents boycott our state withholding from our pay?
Are you serious? You can put an eye out with one of those. The troops are issued nerf nightsticks.
This is reminiscent of the Vietnam War protestors action against Dow Chemical, the maker of napalm. Their “boycott” was to urge people to not buy Saran Wrap.
Now can you understand why countries like Iran and North Korea look at our Left and just chuckle in wonderous disbelief? How many ways can you spell impotent?
I’ll buy some of those AZ bonds if LA does not want them?
Not in the age of Obama.
Just ask the GM bond holders.
I hope Az boycotts LA.
I seems to me that LA gets a very important commodity from Az that they really can’t do without.
This is a very dumb move which is why is was so contentious and barely got passed. Something like 85-90% of LA citizens are opposed to illegal immigrations.
Those voting to boycott were probably illegal themselves…..LA is now a certified cesspool of illegal activity AND Broke.
Geez I really feel for them! (not)
I hope AZ flicks off the lights on LA.
How long before they go, hat in hand, to the Obama administration asking to cover the shortfall in their pensions?
Stupid should be painful.
Boycotts won’t solve the immigration problems and it won’t fix CA’s current budget problems. Where are the individuals who have REAL solutions to the immigration problems? All we hear is that we can’t deport all the illegals or amnesty is is answer. Or better yet, let’s do nothing so the illegal immigration supporters can we whipped into a frenzy at the beck and call of the political elites. Instead of boycotts, these silly people need to get ideas that will work.
If Los Angeles intends to boycott Arizona then they should be willing to sever all ties. Somehow, I just think they just want the local political advantage with their illegals. (If Arizona actually took these bozos at their words, it might make for a riotous situation.)
Doesn’t Arizona supply water and energy to LA?
This game could be fun. Like a Monopoly only in real life.
I would love to see AZ suspend all power and water to LA and see if they like living in the dark.
Let’s hope that Brewer doesn’t take any bribes or folds like most politicians. By all accounts she won’t, but then again they vote in McCain!
I would love to see McCain follow Specter out the door.
A good point but I would guess that the venue for litigation would be in AZ, the location of the plaintiffs who claim the injury. Much better chance of a favorable outcome there.
Come to think of it, LA attorneys will be prohibited by the boycot from traveling to AZ to defend the cases. Default judgements! Wouldn’t that be a riot?
Does not the majority of LA county consist of the city of LA – Who have already made a boycot?
At the end of the day – more sound and fury signifying nothing. Fizzzzzzzzzle.
Just like the liberals, get into a p**sing match with the guy who controls your water and electricity just as you start into SUMMER. What a plan.
sd6104, you get today’s Blue Ribbon!
However, I think the reason the socialist morons are against the AZ law is because they know what will happen. All, and I repeat ALL of the illegals from AZ will just head on over to CA. I live in the People’s Socialist Quagmire of California. We’re darn near insolvent now. Add in all of AZs illegals and it will just get worse.
I’m pretty sure the CA gov’t will know that lots of taxpayers will vote with their feet and move to AZ. Then you can watch the once great state of CA die; just like all other experiments in socialism.
Rambler, you are assuming the Progressives consider illegals and CA’s budget to be problems
They view both as HUGE opportunities, not problems. The AZ law is a threat to their opportunity. So if you think there can be an agreed to solution, sorry.
Jake Gittes: Mulvihill! What are you doing here?
Mulvihill: They shut my water off. What’s it to you?
Jake Gittes: How’d you find out about it? You don’t drink it; you don’t take a bath in it… They wrote you a letter. But then you have to be able to read.
swede, that is a great point!
How would they defend their actions in either direction?
If the attorneys don’t go, then, as you say, summary judgements. Then the people of LaLaLand have to get out their Blame Bush signs, change them to AZ, and have a useless protest.
If the attorneys go, why are they going? To defend what? The entire point of a boycott is not have anything to do with the group you are boycotting. If their defense is successful, they still have the boycott in place! What would they win? If AZ loses, they just unplug the extension cord. Then LaLaLand has to sue AZ to get them to plug it back it in.
This is going to be quite a spectacle.
Lights Out Ah – ha!
Flyoverman, you must have had the unfortunate opportunity to pass through this socialst swamp (or some other) at one time. That astute observation can only come from the pain of first hand knowledge of socialism.
Noah Cross: Either you bring the water to L.A. or you bring L.A. to the water.
Or maybe they can both commiserate about their
bogusmisrememberedmisinterpreted “relatives in WWII stories.”Does this mean that LaLaLand is going to annex Arizona?
Let ‘em try!
Does AZ ever send firefighters to Los Angeles when the wildfires and brushfires are destroying all the multi-million dollar homes?
Not any more, I’ll bet.
Or maybe Governor Brewer can just point out that it is the duty of the federal government to enforce border security and that the Arizona law is merely an adjunct to existing federal law.
An excerpt:
The 9th Circuit isn’t exactly a bastion of conservatism.
I’ve wondered about that. Why no news of lawsuits? Obvious violation of law. You would think the trial lawyers would be…. oh never mind. I think I just answered my own question.
Well, there are very good arguments that it both conflicts and is subject to field preemption. And good arguments that it does not. Certainly not something some law professor can adequately explain in a page long op-ed.
That’s a roger!
Michael Savage calls them the Ninth Circuit Court of Schlemiels.
Friends returning from San Diego tell me they were greeted well by the locals–San Diego has the kind of fence we want. I do not think SD put up that fence to keep the illegals IN.
Morning Chappy, now back to the kitchen.
Otherwise known as trying to change the subject, again. You’ve got so much experience at highjacking, you’re almost qualified for the Somali Navy.
Three soldiers who served under me, all Vietnam vets, contracted Agent Orange related cancers that killed them.
They don’t count either? If people knew TRUE cost of war, the true numbers dead and wounded by all the factors, they’d be less motivated to get into them.
Sure, if you’re wearing oven mitts!
Well, since I doubt we will see any actual posts about this story, or Mark Kirk’s false military claims, I figure I have to get my shots in where I can.
Brewer’s dad wasn’t a soldier.
Normally I would love this and reply by shutting off electricty to the stupid liberal morons of Los Angeles.
However, this kind of turmoil and animosity between fellow Americans is EXACTLY WHAT THE EVIL DEMON OBAMA wants to happen! He wants to divide America, pit American against American!
STOP! We are not each other’s enemy! Obama is! Obama is the Evil Demon Destroyer!
CAN’T YOU SEE THAT!?! Obama is from Hell!!
Professor Terguson: Good answer. Good answer. I like the way you think. I’m gonna be watching you.

Wow. I read AN’s post a little too quickly. For a moment there I thought us “NoDaks” were finally rid of those pesky South Dakotans! LOL I kid. We love ‘em.
Wait…We still own North Dakota? I thought we lost that in a subprime mortgage foreclosure to China.
Has anyone posted a side-by-side comparison of the AZ law and California’s Penal Code 834b?
Brewer’s dad died from disease associated with the fumes he inhaled in an ammunition factory where they cranked out ammo to fight the Nazis. She has been clear about his death in multiple interviews over many years. She was objecting to being called a Nazi, when the cause of her father’s death when she was young involved his contribution to the war effort. You must have stumbled on this story Googling “Drink Wine”.

Good Lord! Maybe I should move to Canada, eh? I can blend in with the best of ‘em. Now, where did I put my touk?
Doesn’t count – it’s not in the official language of California’s Legal System. Spanish.
I grew up in LA County when the schools were not 73% Hispanic. My mother taught in LA County Schools for almost 40 years. Back in the seventies, our Social Science textbooks predicted major immigration from Mexico and other South American countries, well into this century. What those books did not predict was the gross politicising of the issue.
One reason I no longer live in Calfornia is because the political leaders have lost their minds. Rather than solve problems, they degenerate into race and class baiters.
As had Blumenthal on serving during and not in Nam on many occasions. People didn’t use that to excuse the times he didn’t. Face it, if a Dem would have said the exact same words in the exact same situation, there would be a post by MM or Doug.
Good god, is that how you “NoDaks” bastardize the spelling of toque?
Check out the LA Times article linked above. Look at the photo from the LA County Supervisor’s meeting. Really, they’ve lost their minds, except for one Supervisor who voted against the boycott and asked for solutions. What a concept!
Where do I go to buy up the Arizona Municipal bonds on discount? Something tells me Arizona bonds will pay off and California bonds will not.
Does anyone know (really know) whether a governmental entity can boycott another governmental entity?
No, it was annexed by Canada. I knew there was a reason my coins didn’t work in any of those vending machines…
It will be interesting to hear the backlash on KFI John and Ken show today.
It is beginning to look like the state of California will have to go bankrupt before we can reign in these corrupt traitors.
I wish some conservative legal groups would sue them for violating their oath of office.
Speaking of SoCal, I will be in San Diego in about 2 weeks. If anyone knows any good restaurants (price not so important, authenticity paramount) in either SD proper (especially Gas Lamp district) or La Jolla, I’d be grateful for the recs.
Neither were all of the shipyard workers who worked with asbestos and others who did similar work.
They never served wearing the uniform we wore, but they served in my book. Brewer is proud of her father. My dad served the same general way Brewers dad did. By the Grace of God he lived a full life. The Greatest Generation.
Blumenthal is a field grade officer and a JAG. People at that level aren’t “authorized” to misspeak. Therefore, he gets no slack whatsoever.
He’s not Joe Sixpack at the VFW. He’s a pitiful excuse for a leader and has forfeited the right to serve even in the the position he now holds.
Brewers dad was born in 1907 and died in 1956. So he was 49.
Wanna guess what the average life expectancy was of a man born in 1907?
Mark Kirk was a Naval Intelligence Officer. How much slack do they get?
Think rightwingdad and I may be taking our rightwingsons to The Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam this summer. Classic family vacation and we’ll BUYCOTT AZ along the way!
FIFY
Hmmm. So, according to the table, as our technology gets better, our life expectancy increases.
I guess these fools, liberals all, just don’t get that.
Well, make my day!
Naval Intelligence? Is that anything like Congressional Ethics? Or Gay Pride?
Chapoutier, the La Jolla Shores Inn has two nice restaurants. The fare leaned towards seafood in 2008. The building has some miles on it but the food was excellent. They have a web site. Google it and chk it out. Menus are online.
well, chap, what do you like? ‘Roppongi’ is good–I’ve been twice.
CA’s just trying to expand their Green Initiative by cutting 25% of their citizens’ power. (little sarc)
Could it be any more obvious? And you all tout this as “reasonable”?
oops–sorry; forgot to mention it’s right on Prospect, LaJolla
chapoutier–you haven’t stayed in LaJolla before? Like say, La Estancia Spa & Resort?
I can’t believe LA has not changed it’s name. Perhaps, Los Demon.
Rather than work as lawn care, nannies, or maids, Calif. illegals could pedal bikes to produce the (soon to be) missing 25% of electricity.
Two progressive problems w/ one liberal stone: illegals & Green jobs.
La Raza & Streisand would be PROUD!
You mean counting WWI and WWII and their effects on life span?
This is a woman talking about her father, as opposed to a guy who claimed he was there. Huge difference.
OK, only count WWII.
Don’t take the bait…
Flyoverman,
I don’t think that liberals are capable of thinking anything through to the unintended consequences of their actions. They can’t link cause and effect. They would rather protest than to anything productive. After all, protesting is easy and if they didn’t have rights for illegals to get them into the streets, they would find another cause. They can’t be separated from their ideology so the best thing is to keep them out of power.
OK.
I believe this woman has more respect for the citizens of Arizona and America not to give into this two bit, fraudulent, usurper acting as president.
Now is the time to show this ass wipe where the bear craps…and tell him to go back to D.C. until he does something for America.
GO Governor Brewer.
Although I totally disagree with Palin with her campaigning and endorsements to RINO’s I gotta ask, are female Governors the only Republican politicians with any gonads in this country?
Contact the Mayor of Los Angeles and tell him that you support Arizona and you oppose his boycott! Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
(213) 978-0721
I respectfully dissagree. Every bad effect is instantly linked to GW Bush, and every good effect is linked to Dear Leader. It is self evident truth.
Time to stop playing games with these illegal invaders and their supporters and push back and hard. Cut the water and power that L.A. buys from Arizona. I’m willing to bet they can unload that power and water to more than one other buyer.
Patriots of LA-
and Patriots in CA-
I say-
Let’s take our vacation $$$$ to Arizona!!!
C-CS
It is hoped that Arizona can cut the energy supply to Mexifornia. I’m not sure if they can, but I wish it. To those who support the boycott of Arizona… go suck battery acid… if I may be so blunt and rude. ( I hid my college degrees so I could speak this way, sarc on full load))
How? They both unequivocally knew the truth, whether they were talking about themselves or someone else.
I like just about anything. My wife and sister in law—well they are different story. BUT they both like seafood, so this is a great suggestion.
I spent one day in La Jolla, but never stayed the night.
I think we may have eaten there on my one and only dinner there, which was excellent. Again, thanks.
