LA County Votes to Boycott Arizona

By Doug Powers  •  June 2, 2010 03:04 PM

It’s on:

After heated debate, Los Angeles County supervisors voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to boycott Arizona in response to the passage of its controversial illegal immigration law, a decision that came the same day the Los Angeles Unified School District condemned the law.
[...]
The boycott suspends county-funded travel to Arizona unless the county’s chief executive determines that county interests would be seriously harmed. It also calls for a report within two weeks on how the county might terminate contracts with Arizona-based companies and orders the divestiture of Arizona state and municipal bonds by the county’s pension fund.

The county’s auditor-controller estimated that the county has spent about $122 million over the last five years on Arizona goods and services.

Should Los Angeles residents go stock up on candles? We’ll see.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will meet with with President Obama tomorrow, where Obama will probably make a predictable crack about how a “beer summit” with a “Brewer” would have been more appropriate, but after that, don’t expect the AZ guv to fall prey to what will be a laundry list of goodies her state will be offered to taper or get rid of the law (note to the White House: Unfortunately, Brewer isn’t as gullible as Bart Stupak — sorry).

Besides, “We’ll meet you in court” doesn’t sound like something said by a person who’s prepared to compromise.

Hopefully Brewer will also take the opportunity to read the actual law to Obama, if she can find a window of time when he’s not covering his ears and saying “la la la la I can’t hear you la la la!”

The bonds are probably at the lowest rate they will see for the forseeable future. Selling now would cost them millions in lost revinue, and do absolutely zip to Arizona. Someone else will buy them.

A good point but I would guess that the venue for litigation would be in AZ, the location of the plaintiffs who claim the injury. Much better chance of a favorable outcome there.

Come to think of it, LA attorneys will be prohibited by the boycot from traveling to AZ to defend the cases. Default judgements! Wouldn’t that be a riot?

However, I think the reason the socialist morons are against the AZ law is because they know what will happen. All, and I repeat ALL of the illegals from AZ will just head on over to CA. I live in the People’s Socialist Quagmire of California. We’re darn near insolvent now. Add in all of AZs illegals and it will just get worse.

I’m pretty sure the CA gov’t will know that lots of taxpayers will vote with their feet and move to AZ. Then you can watch the once great state of CA die; just like all other experiments in socialism.

Mexifornia is just another proof of the fact that they (the CA Legislature) can ignore the operation of the free market, but they will not be able to ignore the consequences of ignoring the free market.

swede, that is a great point!

How would they defend their actions in either direction?

If the attorneys don’t go, then, as you say, summary judgements. Then the people of LaLaLand have to get out their Blame Bush signs, change them to AZ, and have a useless protest.

If the attorneys go, why are they going? To defend what? The entire point of a boycott is not have anything to do with the group you are boycotting. If their defense is successful, they still have the boycott in place! What would they win? If AZ loses, they just unplug the extension cord. Then LaLaLand has to sue AZ to get them to plug it back it in.

This is going to be quite a spectacle.

Or maybe Governor Brewer can just point out that it is the duty of the federal government to enforce border security and that the Arizona law is merely an adjunct to existing federal law.

    An excerpt:

As long as Congress hasn’t expressly forbidden the state law in question, the statute doesn’t conflict with federal law and Congress has not displaced all state laws from the field, it is permitted. That’s why Arizona’s 2007 law making it illegal to knowingly employ unauthorized aliens was sustained by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

The 9th Circuit isn’t exactly a bastion of conservatism.

Well, there are very good arguments that it both conflicts and is subject to field preemption. And good arguments that it does not. Certainly not something some law professor can adequately explain in a page long op-ed.

This is a very dumb move which is why is was so contentious and barely got passed. Something like 85-90% of LA citizens are opposed to illegal immigrations.

It will be interesting to hear the backlash on KFI John and Ken show today.
It is beginning to look like the state of California will have to go bankrupt before we can reign in these corrupt traitors.
I wish some conservative legal groups would sue them for violating their oath of office.

They never served wearing the uniform we wore, but they served in my book. Brewer is proud of her father. My dad served the same general way Brewers dad did. By the Grace of God he lived a full life. The Greatest Generation.

As had Blumenthal on serving during and not in Nam on many occasions.

Blumenthal is a field grade officer and a JAG. People at that level aren’t “authorized” to misspeak. Therefore, he gets no slack whatsoever.

He’s not Joe Sixpack at the VFW. He’s a pitiful excuse for a leader and has forfeited the right to serve even in the the position he now holds.

Probably because 30-40% of LA city’s residents are illegal, 80% of LA citizens likley have several illegals living in the house and garage next door. They are sick of them. Also explains the miniscule turnouts for municipal elections.

Hmmm. So, according to the table, as our technology gets better, our life expectancy increases.

I guess these fools, liberals all, just don’t get that.

I don’t think that liberals are capable of thinking anything through to the unintended consequences of their actions. They can’t link cause and effect. They would rather protest than to anything productive. After all, protesting is easy and if they didn’t have rights for illegals to get them into the streets, they would find another cause. They can’t be separated from their ideology so the best thing is to keep them out of power.
