LA County Votes to Boycott Arizona
**Written by guest-blogger Doug Powers
After heated debate, Los Angeles County supervisors voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to boycott Arizona in response to the passage of its controversial illegal immigration law, a decision that came the same day the Los Angeles Unified School District condemned the law.
[...]
The boycott suspends county-funded travel to Arizona unless the county’s chief executive determines that county interests would be seriously harmed. It also calls for a report within two weeks on how the county might terminate contracts with Arizona-based companies and orders the divestiture of Arizona state and municipal bonds by the county’s pension fund. The county’s auditor-controller estimated that the county has spent about $122 million over the last five years on Arizona goods and services.
Should Los Angeles residents go stock up on candles? We’ll see.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will meet with with President Obama tomorrow, where Obama will probably make a predictable crack about how a “beer summit” with a “Brewer” would have been more appropriate, but after that, don’t expect the AZ guv to fall prey to what will be a laundry list of goodies her state will be offered to taper or get rid of the law (note to the White House: Unfortunately, Brewer isn’t as gullible as Bart Stupak — sorry).
Besides, “We’ll meet you in court” doesn’t sound like something said by a person who’s prepared to compromise.
Hopefully Brewer will also take the opportunity to read the actual law to Obama, if she can find a window of time when he’s not covering his ears and saying “la la la la I can’t hear you la la la!”

Oh wow. I just have to say that I notice Hillary is 44 is backtracking to this blog post.
No matter how you feel about Obama or Hillary, those people are effing nuts.
just call me an honorary Arizonan living in invader-occupied and invader-governed Los Angeles.
this is how far it has gotten. this is how far we’ve allowed the invasion to go – invaders and their US agents/helpers have infiltrated our local governments and are standing our laws on their head to wreck our society. insulting normal citizens in support of invaders.
I would love to return to public hangings for treason. every member of any council who votes to “boycott” US citizens in favor of invaders with these kinds of lies and smears against US citizens needs to be prosecuted for treason.
Ok chapoutier, this post of yours is not making sense to me. Can you re-inform me of your context?
Pull the plug AZ. California and LA are illegal enablers and should feel the price they should have to pay. Remember the rolling brown outs a few years ago? How about 24 hour blackouts? I bet “la raza” would be in the streets in less than 24 hours alledging racism.
Hey idiots, it’s not racism, it is following the rule of law, but if you knew what that meant you wouldn’t be here in the first place would you.
Hillary is 44 is a website (you can see it above) with a bunch of radical HRC supporters. They were highly entertaining during the primaries.
Doesn’t California have a somewhat similar state law? Are they also going to boycott California?
Spacey is right, Estancia La Jolla is very nice and has the Bodgea Wine Bar, a feature chap might enjoy. We stayed there in March and because we don’t drink, we didn’t try the wine bar but we loved the hotel.
As far as restaurants in San Diego, I like Rama in the Gas Lamp District. They serve high quality Thai food in a rather hip atmosphere, if you care about that sort of thing. Directions and parking are a tad tricky, so call ahead.
Mike Broomhead a local radio show host on KFYI is starting an Arizona Fights Back campaign on his website on KFYI.COM
He is highlighting companies and locals who have said they are going to boycott us and give contact information so we can call them and give our thoughts on boycotts. Yesterday it took less than an hour after posting the Reno city council info for the mayor to call the station in a panic.
Doug could you do a post on this so the rest of the country can join in the fun?
Back to the topic, if good ol’ Kenneth Hahn, former LA Supervisor still sat on that board, the vote would have been different.
Happy, I’m sorry but Hahn died in ’97. If he still sat on the board he would smell really bad by now and likely would not effected the vote. Just sayin.
and likely would not have effected the vote.
Keyboard challenged today.
I live in L.A. County, and nothing would tickle me more than seeing AZ shut off the power to these liberal tools.
I’d really like to know how the Tea Party or GOP is handling this issue and standing up on their hind legs to support a battered champion. This is a defacto social mandate going on here. If Arizona backs down or is defeated on this issue and such intimidates others from even taking a stand, then illegal amnesty is pretty much a shoo-in, and what gains the Tea Party brought will drown under a deluge of new Democratic voters, and conceivably Conservatism in this country. Hasn’t anyone thought of this??

I too live in LA County, and I’ve become so disgusted at the America-hating psychosis this AZ law has engendered that I just want the Revolution to start now.
I crave for a reporter to ask that Dork-in-Chief president of ours the following question:
“Mr. President, when Americans ask why you’ve not ‘plugged the hole’, why is it you don’t grasp that what they’re referring to is the last 40 years of Federal Incomptence — and virtual treason — regarding the nation’s southern border?”
For indeed, that’s the real hole that needs plugging.
Al-Qaeda can relax, liberalism is demolishing the West from within.
Just looked it up. Perfect. Will definitely be going there one of the nights. Thanks.
California panhandlers are declaring revolt against the tax laws.
The state / counties / cities are awash in red ink. These buffoons don’t know how balance the books; virtually every single governing entity in California is penniless. But they are fearless when voting not to spend the money (they don’t have) in Arizona.
Thank you Chapoutier for explaining to me who this ‘Hillary is 44′ group is. Obviously if I commented on them, it would be hard for me to avoid my biases.
I agree they are ‘effing’ nuts, but probably not necessarily in the same way you would view them.
My opinion is that this is interesting that there are even Hillary supporters left at all after she took a lower position in he whitehouse for which she has no experience in, and now that she has stayed with Obama almost two years she invites critcism with respect to her credibility that she is really any different than he is.
I used to think that the longer she stays with Obama, the less likely she will overcome the damage of being associated with Obama. Now after the Sestak/Obama/Clinton scandal, I believe she has lost her window of opportunity permanently.
Remember the Reset Button fiasco with Russia a while back? Here’s an excerpt from Oleg Atbashian’s piece on Hillary, and how utterly ignorant she is.
President Incompetent and His Band of Brainless Wonders.
The button said “overcharged” in Russian instead of “reset”. But even more than the mistranslation or missing the cultural nuances was what should have been obvious.
During the cold war there was a new vocabulary – stuff like “Mutually Assured Destruction”, “Nuke”, “Fallout”, “The Football” (The briefcase always with the president with the launch codes) and of course, “The Button” – which when pushed launches the first ICBM which triggers MAD which destroys life on the planet. Even years after the cold war, giving the Russians a big red button was incredibly naieve, just plain bad taste and made Hillary look like a complete idiot. Even before the photo op was over, the foreign minister couldn’t keep a straight face.
Smart Power.
Chap,
Here is where I used to love to go.
HumphreysbytheBay on Shelter Island.
Nice wine list too! Brunch is excellent. Hope you enjoy.
Just remember to check where you are spending your money, a lot of large internet retailers are based in LA county.
I think NewEgg just lost my business for the duration. To bad, they have good prices, but I don’t think it is fair for LA to try to push their illegal social agenda on the rest of the country.
If enough people put their money where their mouth is, the LA county supervisors will be out of office before Arizona could turn off the power.

Yep, it is 834b and starts off:
(a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
federal immigration laws.
Let’s not forget that both Arizona and California laws are based upon existing federal law. Where are the shouts, protests, and boycotts at the root of the problem? Where is the boycott of the United States?
Inquiring minds want to know…

Now, where did I put my touk?
Good god, is that how you “NoDaks” bastardize the spelling of toque?
As much as it pains me to write this, we’re BOTH wrong. It’s tuque. But you were closer. I doff my chapeau to you.
I think there is a lack of appreciation for the situation in Southern California in general and certainly LA in particular.
They are ground zero for latino populations. LA is no longer little Mexico, it is Mexico.
So any type of enforcement of immigration law will be done by force. LA’s Latino population is not going to roll up their beds and move back to Mexico.
This is a life or death matter to LA and LA’s leadership. I bet if they could vote to leave the US and rejoin Mexico they’d do so.
What the LA city council is doing makes perfect sense to me and its just the beginning of this process that will, IF laws are enforced, lead to violence.
It will soon be the majority of the country ganging up on places like LA. LA is going to fight back. I can assure you.
You have a similar situation in many areas in California, north central valley, etc. But LA is probably the most concentrated.
Unless Los Angeles divests itself of its portion of the ownership in the powerplants in Arizona, it’s highly unlikely AZ can cut the power.
If L.A. is stupid enough to do so, they deserve to have their power cut off.
Fact is, the contracts L.A. has with AZ are long-standing and difficult in the extreme to re-negotiate or terminate. Even with this vote, the boycott AND the threat to cut electricity are both pretty hollow threats. . .posturing by politicians for the sake of their constituents.
I did boot camp in San Diego, was stationed at Camp Pendleton, lived on the beach at Carlsbad, went to graduate school in Orange County, worked in Northern California east of Modesto. Grandparents lived on Nice Lake, cousin was mayor of Sebastipool, uncle and aunt lived on Tiburon in the bay but now have retired to Paradise. Daughter went to college in San Fransisco.
I’m an Arizonan. But I know California quite well.
Impeach BO. He stinks of corruption.
AZ needs to schedule some maintenance of the power plants supplying LA – say during the whole month of August. Talk about turning up the heat!
Brewer’s dad was not a “civilian” either. Under LOAC his occupation made him a legitimate military target.
What does this have to do with the point of the post? Gov Brewer could be a liar from the very pit of Hell itself and yet that has no bearing on this issue.
Deny, deflect, defend at all costs, it seems.
This is Brewer’s one and only chance to stand tall and prove herself – will she allow Obama to blackmail bribe or threaten her? I hope she stands her ground.
Naval (military) Intelligence. . .a whole HECK of a lot of slack. . .those guys never get it right. . .
Chaps allegation that Brewer’s dad “wasn’t a soldier” wasn’t exactly true and diminished the man’s service unnecessarily. He did “serve” in WWII, and through his service, did “fight” the Nazi’s.
LOAC is clear, workers that directly contribute to a war effort are no longer afforded the protections of a “civilian,” they become military targets. My post made that clear.
Apparently you are not a “real” major (or a poorly studied one) otherwise you know the relevance of the post.
You’re welcome and bon appetit.
Swede, Ken Hahn was a friend of my Dad, they’re both gone but not forgotten.
I am a “real” USAF major. No need to impugn my service, especially when what I said was not with reference to YOU at all.
If you saw my comments earlier to Aloha, you’d see even more clearly that I was referring to not feeding into the attempt to get off the point of the post by finding some other issue to attack Gov Brewer on.
My point was that Chapoutier was bringing up a non-issue to the main post on purpose (in my estimation) as a distraction (hijack) of the thread.
Thanks for the needless insult.
Yes, but if you notice, the City and County of Los Angeles are very lax in enforcing that law. The current crop of LA public officials might also have the same excuse as Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano and Obama: they don’t read ‘em, they form opinions based on conjecture and feelings. With the latter, they proceed to demonize that which is right! In fact, CA’s immigration laws are gathering dust and cobwebs, same as the federal law on immigration.
In CA, the lawmakers can now rightfully be called lawbreakers, what with the LA Mayor, City Council, and Board of Supervisors all conniving with illegals to do the State more harm!
Go ahead, Arizona. Turn off the lights in Los Angeles. Let them rely on their jaded Hollywood Stars to shine light in the city! Heh!
The Hollywood stars dont live near the illegals, nor have to deal with their issues, like the family of the late Jamal Shaw.
Every single story I have seen on this would disagree, as ALL of them refer to him as a civilian. But the point is it stretches definitions further than salt water taffy to claim that he died fighting Nazis in Germany. Everyone here knows that. They just won’t admit it. Your copious use of “quotations” in your post is evidence enough of that.
Both toque and tuque are accepted spellings.
Read my post again, please. Never claimed he died while fighting the Nazi’s. Did say he was not a simple civilian under LOAC.
Besides, you are a lawyer, right, so when did you start believing “ALL” (there goes those quotations again) people are right when it comes to legal definitions and categories?
Also, as a lawyer, you should know the classic example used to underscore situations when a “civilian” (quotations again) may be a lawful death in war is the munition factory worker scenario. During war a munition factory is a legitimate target. The enemy attacks the factory and civilians die. Those are lawful civilian deaths and permitted (double effect). Conversely, if a farm worker raising crops to feed an army is killed deliberately that is not a lawful death.
The distinction is quite an appropriate when you tried to diminish his service by calling him a civilian and not recognizing his status as a lawful target when at work. If he worked at a grocery store or at the local shoe factory, then he would be a civilian not lawfully subject to attack in war, but he was not and his status was addressed under LOAC.
Try to slow down next time, chap, it might improve your reading comprehension.

Okay, my bad for not understanding that in your post to me you were actually responding to chap. Goodness. . .how could I miss that.
“If you saw my comments earlier to Aloha, you’d see even more clearly that I was referring to not feeding into the attempt to get off the point of the post by finding some other issue to attack Gov Brewer on.”
Sorry. . . .only read chap on this thread because he is so interesting.
“Thanks for the needless insult.”
Anytime. My pleasure.
Read MY post again. I never said you did. Brewer did, which is the important thing.
That is super. Thanks for the lesson. But FYI, 9999 out of 1000 lawyers wouldn’t have a clue as to your classic example because it is irrelevant to the practice of about 99.99% of us. And none of this is relevant to the fact that he did not die fighting the Nazis in Germany, except under the most tortured of definitions.
Who says I was diminishing his service/work/whatever you want to call it? Someone wanted to use the example of soldiers dying of Agent Orange some years after fighting. I simply said he wasn’t a soldier, and therefore a poor analogy. Anything else you want to read into that is your issue, not mine.
This is one situation where the 30% will not prevail against the 70%. LA County has been conquered already. How else would they vote?
Only in California would a County vote in favor of a foreign invasion and only in America could our White House side with terrorists against Israel.
Let’s hope that all of the illegal aliens in Arizona move to LA and let’s hope that liberals are voted out of Washington while we still have a country we can recognize.
