Day of Prayer for the Gulf, and Father’s Day Wishes

So far, in order to end the catastrophe in the Gulf, we’ve tried yacht races, seemingly endless golf (“did you plug the hole on the 17th, daddy?”), baseball games, cute catch-phrases, McCartney concerts, looking for an ass to kick, delaying offers of assistance from other countries, idling skimmers for life vest and fire hydrant inventory, shakedowns, ignoring Kevin Costner until just now, pulling cleanup workers away from their jobs to serve as backdrop for a photo op, all preceded by electing a president who promised to control the tides — and so far nothing has worked.
As always, that leaves us with prayer, and lots of it:
State senators in Louisiana have designated Sunday as a day of prayer aimed at seeking an end to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster.
On Wednesday, Louisiana state Sen. Robert Adley won unanimous approval of the resolution, which invites people of all faiths from within the state and around the U.S. to focus on divine intervention to find a solution to the crisis.
“Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail,” CNN reported Adley saying in a statement released last week. “It is clearly time for a miracle for us.”
Hurry up and get your prayer in before some federal judge gets wind of this.
On another note, today is of course Father’s Day, so a Happy Father’s Day to all you dads who, like me, have undertaken one of the toughest and most important jobs in the world.
This morning, my kids made me a breakfast so fat and salty that if Michael Bloomberg knew about it he would have sought an injuction to prevent it from ever being cooked, which made me enjoy eating it that much more.
And if you’re one of those people with two dads, President Obama’s Father’s Day Proclamation has you covered.
I’d also like to give a great, big “Happy Father’s Day” to my own dad (I only have one father — I feel left out now), Carl, from whom I got much of my work ethic, conservatism, love of family & country and impeccable driving skills.
Now all I need to do is teach dad how to use a computer so he can read this.
