Petraeus to replace McChrystal

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 23, 2010 01:28 PM

News breaking out all over. I hope Gen. Petraeus is well-rested.

He needs a clone.

How far we’ve come from the MoveOn/General Betray Us heydays, eh?

Next gig for McChrystal…Columnist for Rolling Stone? Celebrity MTV tweeter? Milblogger?

***

Here’s the AP:

A senior administration official tells The Associated Press that President Barack Obama has accepted Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s resignation as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan and is replacing him with Gen. David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command.

McChrystal was pushed out over his blistering remarks about administration officials quoted in a magazine interview.

After an Oval Office meeting with McChrystal in the morning, Obama huddled with his war advisers and planned to announce his decision on the general’s fate to the nation at 1:30 p.m. EDT in the Rose Garden.

***

B-b-b-b-but didn’t Obama say a vote for his opponent would be a vote for four more years of Bush?

Another Emily Litella moment.

Ya think it’s finally dawned on this ship of fools that if they bring all those troops home – how in G-d’s name are they ever going to find jobs for them? Wouldn’t that shove the number of out of work off the cliff?

I see this as a ‘make work’ project by the admin, and not some noble cause. The fact that casualty after casualty keeps stacking up and there is no emotion, nevermind concern, from this admin is chilling.

They don’t want to win, and will throw every roadblock in the mix to do so.

    Ahhhhhhhhhh…..

If they come home, go to Korea, or go to wherever they are still members of the U.S. military. They are not going to be “laid off.”

I don’t think we have added any significant “head count” to the Force Structure since 9/11. Their “plus up” has been the National Guard and Reserves. A full ARNG Brigade from my state is deploying this fall.

    Legendx3,

I am not doubting that some people in Afghanistan want peace. But that wasn’t my question. My question revolves around what Obama considers “victory” and what others might consider “victory” in Afghanistan.

Endless warfare and attrition is not necessarily the best or quickest way to peace. And democracies normally tire of wars of attrition more quickly than lunatic ideologues. Of course, that assumes we will remain a democracy for long under Obama…

Part of a Commentary from George Will
“It is difficult to suppress this thought: McChrystal’s disrespectful flippancies, and the chorus of equally disdainful comments from the unpleasant subordinates he has chosen to have around him, emanate from the toxic conditions that result when the military’s can-do culture collides with a cannot-be-done assignment.

In this, Afghanistan is Vietnam redux.”

I want to just sit under a tree somewhere and just look back and mourn – what the hell was it all for.

Without regard to these events, I would like to thank General McCrystal and his family for the many sacrifices they have made throughout the General’s career.

General McCrystal’s professionalism, devotion to duty, and personal concern for those serving under him exemplifies what a leader is.

God bless him and his family always.

Of course, the withdrawal date is almost certainly as “firm” as Obama’s promise to close Gitmo within the first year of his presidency…

Obama isn’t planning to win in Afghanistan but he isn’t going to kill himself to lose before he leaves office either.
