As we head into Independence Day weekend, my column today reflects on the other “A” word missing from the immigration debate: Assimilation.

In his immigration speech on Thursday, President Obama heralded America as a “nation of immigrants” defined not by blood or birth, but by “fidelity to the shared values that we all hold so dear.” If only it were so. Left-wing academics and activists spurned assimilation as a common goal long ago. Their fidelity lies with bilingualism (a euphemism for native language maintenance over English-first instruction), identity politics, ethnic militancy and a borderless continent.
Obama blames “politics” for the intractable immigration debate. Whose politics? The amnesty mob has taken to ambushing congressional offices this week to scream at lawmakers to choose “reform” (giving a blanket path to citizenship to millions of illegal aliens) or “racism” (their description of any and every legislative measure to stiffen sanctions for and deter the acts of border-jumping, visa-overstaying and deportation-evading).
Is there no middle ground for all sides to agree that clearing naturalization application backlogs should take priority over expanding illegal alien benefits, or that tracking and deporting violent illegal alien criminals should take precedence over handing out driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, or that streamlining the employee citizenship verification process for businesses (E-verify) and fixing outdated visa tracking databases should come before indiscriminately expanding temporary visa and guest worker programs?
Must every response to even the most modest of immigration enforcement measures be “RAAAAACIST”?
Further, as I’ve noted many times over the years when debating both Democrats and Republicans who fall back on empty phrases to justify putting the amnesty cart before the enforcement horse, we are not a “nation of immigrants.” This is both a factual error and a warm-and-fuzzy non sequitur. Eighty-five percent of the residents currently in the United States were born here. Yes, we are almost all descendants of immigrants. But we are not a “nation of immigrants.” (And the politically correct president certainly wouldn’t argue that Native American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians and descendants of black slaves “immigrated” here in any common sense of the word, would he?)
Even if we were a “nation of immigrants,” it does not explain why we should be against sensible immigration control. The Founding Fathers were emphatically insistent on protecting the country against indiscriminate mass immigration. They insisted on assimilation as a pre-condition, not an afterthought. Historian John Fonte assembled their wisdom, and it bears repeating this Independence Day weekend:
George Washington, in a letter to John Adams, stated that immigrants should be absorbed into American life so that “by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures, laws: in a word soon become one people.”
In a 1790 speech to Congress on the naturalization of immigrants, James Madison stated that America should welcome the immigrant who could assimilate, but exclude the immigrant who could not readily “incorporate himself into our society.”
Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1802: “The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education and family.”
Hamilton further warned that “The United States have already felt the evils of incorporating a large number of foreigners into their national mass; by promoting in different classes different predilections in favor of particular foreign nations, and antipathies against others, it has served very much to divide the community and to distract our councils. It has been often likely to compromise the interests of our own country in favor of another. The permanent effect of such a policy will be, that in times of great public danger there will be always a numerous body of men, of whom there may be just grounds of distrust; the suspicion alone will weaken the strength of the nation, but their force may be actually employed in assisting an invader.”
The survival of the American republic, Hamilton maintained, depends upon “the preservation of a national spirit and a national character.” “To admit foreigners indiscriminately to the rights of citizens the moment they put foot in our country would be nothing less than to admit the Grecian horse into the citadel of our liberty and sovereignty.”
As pro-amnesty extremists moan that “we didn’t cross the borders, the borders crossed us” and illegal alien marchers haul foreign flags above Old Glory, President Obama pretends that the “common national sentiment” our Founding Fathers embraced still binds us all together. Many of us still have faith in a strong, sovereign America — the unhyphenated, the law-abiding, the gratitude-filled sons and daughters and grandchildren of legal immigrants for whom such distinctions still matter. But it’s no thanks to the assimilation saboteurs who put “one world” over “one nation under God.”

Obowmao learned a different history than most of us. His includes the 57 states in the US among other things. Give it a few years and the history books will be re-written to reflect his version. He is so out of touch with America it’s not funny. Hoax and Chains.
For a classic humorous story on assimilation, read “The Education of Hyman Kaplan,” by Leo C. Rosten, about an immigrant prepping for his citizenship exam. It’s as hilarious as it is wise and patriotic.
I have first hand experience with people from SE Asia and watching them learn the Language, go to school, study their asses off, and the day they became US Citizens, they were proud and I was proud for them. What the majority of these good people went through makes you want to sit down and just listen. They did it legally. We have a class of individuals that think it is their right to break our laws and flaunt it in our faces. I have no sympathy for em, none what so ever.
I hope that before the knee-jerk Obama-bashing comments begin that people first remember that the reason Obama is president and that the Republican party is now cutting weeds in the distant meadows is because they tried to cram amnesty down our throats in 2006 and 2007.
Worse yet, the gang that led that effort still controls the GOP and it is beginning to look like they will survive in November. Don’t expect anything to change in November.
Forget “assimulation”. That’s a bygone term. The most critical operative word here is Deportation. All together now, Dee-portation! Before your traditions and culture here are warped and diluted out of recognition forever! And no crap about can’t ship 11 million dyed-in-the-wool anchor-seed illegals back home. They shipped near that many black people here in wooden ships not all that long ago, and we got easy buses now! The Berlin Airlift showed mass transport is possible, so what are “R” pols excuse??

Assimilation? What’s that? 95% of the roofing companies in my area currently doing work to repair hail damage are hispanic. Darn near all of them don’t speak English and have the spanish radio stations blaring away on their cheap radios. They can be heard 2-3 houses away. The ones next to me got their plugged pulled. The owner is 80+ and hard of hearing. He didn’t know they were using his electricity. He wasn’t happy about it. So much for assimilation!
Comprehensive immigration reform equals amnesty and will do nothing to secure the borders. Obama is a pathological liar, even more so than Slick Willie. Truth is foreign to these guys. I wonder if he expects the family of that dead rancher to believe that the border is the safest its been in twenty years. Do the sheriff deputies that are being shot believe it? Do rational sane Americans believe it? I think not!
If citizenship was defined by blood and birth, Obama wouldn’t have qualified to run for President.

The news today is that in our ‘War Zone’ (undeclared war) in Afghanistan, 4 people were killed in a suicide bombing attack half way around the world.
BUT: 21 people were killed in a gunfight 12 miles south of the Arizona border today. (liberals will say guns are the problem).
Americans are rightly frightened and the government doesn’t even recognize it. If they don’t recognize it, they won’t fix it. . . even while they demand we pay them taxes so they can ‘protect’ us.
The thing that nobody ever says when they say ‘we are a nation of immigrants’ is that before 1960, we didn’t offer incentives for citizenship through social security or Medicare/ and welfare. The ‘nation of immigrants’ before the 60′s grew in population because people were guaranteed FREEDOM!
If freedom was all these people wanted, I’d be fine with it. But as it stands, our government promises them our money as they encourage them to steal it even before we give it to them.
It is insane that our government ‘representation’ is actually representing non-Americans.

Actually, it is the the people fron the latin american countries that refuse to assimilate. They are the ones that have all of the associations LaRaza, MecHa etc fighting the loudest. Everytime english as a national language comes up they’re the ones protesting as well when illegal immigration comes up they’re the ones protesting. Again, this is not a immigration problem but illegal immigration. The Latin American countries are the biggest abusers of this with the largest illegal alien population. Most other immigrants that come here try to assimilate look around at the asian population. We must stop being abused by the latin american hispanic problem. They have proved time and time again they’re the majority of the problem og illegal immigration and non-assimilation. Until this nation understands that, we will never have any change.

I wish our educators knew anything about history, because so many of these issues we are facing have been seen before, documented results have been published, and still our educators don’t know and don’t care that they don’t know. Contrary to naming conventions there are no native americans. To be correct it would be the first settlers. There are no humans native to north or south america.
Like all countries the borders were set by either purchase or war. Mexico LOST, or more accurately they quit fighting. Per their long history they were too busy fighting with each other.
So for generations the story gets told that southern California was taken from them and it really belongs to Mexico. So they feel entitled to just move there.

The comprehensive immigration reform passed in 1986, that gave millions of other illegals a quick path to citizenship, and which also included provisions to secure the border, didn’t work. What makes today’s idiots in Congress (which incidentally includes some of 1986′s idiots in Congress)think it will work this time?

Liberals talk about freedom in terms of ‘discrimination’. I just got a robocall saying that I may be discriminated against in my workplace if I have diabetes.
I’ve seen articles that said denying health insurance coverage is ‘discrimination’. This is what caused the housing crisis. It was ‘discrimination’ for a bank to deny a loan application to someone based on their income.
sorry to get off topic, but is it discrimination to ask someone who smokes, or doesn’t take care of themselves (diabetes, AIDS, cancer from smoking or sun exposure, eats bad food to make them fat) to pay more for insurance than someone who eats right, exercises, and takes care of their health.
Health insurance won’t solve the obesity problem (which is a HUGE driver of health costs).
We are so focused on ‘discrimination’ that we don’t care about the RIGHTS of Americans. Giving someone with AIDS insurance at the same price as someone completely healthy is denying the healthy person a right to lower cost coverage as a reward for living right. Deporting illegal aliens isn’t ‘discrimination’, it is protecting Americans – the only thing the feds are supposed to do.

As to the idea that suddenly folks are going to assimilate, well that is just not going to happen.
This is going to get ugly IF we who are American by birth, blood or choice, understand the idea of ONE nation under God and want to reclaim that reality. We who are ONE nation are going to have to push back against those who are not.
It will take more than articles and laws to accomplish the goal of our national pride and national identity.

Of course it will work to meet the needs of the democrats and chambers of commerce to bolster the number of sheeple voters who have no clue to what it means to be independent, who will vote as they are told in the language of the place they left, encouraged to retain their cultural lifestyles, be told and believe “the white man” is holding them back, have lots of kids and be willingly dependent on government “low income” programs such as the “earned income tax credit” widely advertised in PSAs and paid for by productive taxpayers, and desperately willing to work for the lowest possible wages just to make any kind of income.

Sorry and I have made this point before, work how? This plan does not work. The assumption in all these schemes about why the left is pro-amnesty and open borders is the economic engine of this country stays constant. They’ll have a voter block so they can stay in office, so they can continue to increase taxes, to continue to force socialism on a once great country.
But, and in one way this is good news, the economic engine is NOT a given. As we can see already in today’s world. The assumption that at the end of the day the economic engine that provides the resources to empower the left will be present is FALSE.
All of the rest of their house of cards and these schemes that everyone seems to be selling on the right come tumbling down in the face of this reality: no money, nothing works.
We’ve already over spent beyond imagination to make the current pretend world appear to work.
So no none of this “works”. Why the right creates these incredibly fear based schemes as IF they will actually have a snow ball chance of coming to pass is difficult to understand. Unless its about selling books and booking face time on Glen Beck.
We are conservatives because how we see government is that it is the only form of government that actually works.

That is THE question isn’t it. Why aren’t current laws being enforced. Obama wants to frame this as we need “new” laws. We don’t need new laws. We need the existing laws to be enforced. Why aren’t current laws being enforced at state and federal levels.
California on its books already has laws almost exactly the same as AZ’s 1070. Isn’t that amazing.
1. First secure the border. Really secure it.
2. Find out why current laws aren’t enforced and start enforcing current laws. Not some new legislation dropped in Congress.
Those 2 things are all we need to do.
Its not rocket science.
Is there anything the government is supposed to do that it does? It is so busy being in the citizens personal life, what we eat, what we wear, if we smoke, if we wear a seatbelt, and on and on, that they have no time to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic. It is “can I be re- elected”, not what do the people need to be safe to persue life, liberty, and persue happiness.
The new assimilation is that we are supposed to assimilate to the open border mindset rather that the illegals assimilating to our culture. The values put forth by the founding fathers are not considered to be politically correct by our ruling elites.

That is pretty much my point. The 1986 “Amnesty to End All Amnesties” was about as effective as World War I being the “War to End All Wars”. Unless and until we start enforcing the laws on the books, any new laws would find a better use being wrapped around the toilet paper roll in my bathroom.

Perhaps I should have put a sarc tag on my comments or ” ” on work. Of course amnesty will not “work”, as it did not “work” in ’86. I’m sure with a new amnestey there will be, as before, no real effort to control the borders, entry points and enforce current immigration laws.
It only “works” in that the dems believe this is all about power and control, and with some the internal destruction of the USA as global economic and military power.
It isn’t just the new mexi-illegals that aren’t in the mood to assimilate. Don’t forget the blacks that live in Oakland who want ebonics taught in our schools because nobody speaks English where they live. Or the pseudo-citizens/moochers that attend any of many so-called elite universities that want to tear the country apart. They want DIVERSITY, not assimilation. Until the pukes that want to sponge off of the producing element are eliminated we’re in for a long culture war, and a very uncivil one at that.
Amnesty needs to be dropped totally. Anyone here illegally gets NO path to citizenship EVER!!! No reward for law breaking. Past amnesty programs gave us more illegals. There has to be a firm punishment and deterrent for those who break the law. Why stay here to be caught and then not get a reward of citizenship. They will self-deport and get in line. Anything given too freely will never be valued by those who receive it. Immigrants should have to work hard to become eligible for it. They have to be motivated to be part of our society. Then and only then will they value living here. Our non-assimilating immigrants are just parasites, taking jobs and sucking money out of the economy to send home. We have encouraged them further by learning their languages since they are too lazy, resistant or stupid to learn ours. English is the one thing we have in common and illegals have destroyed that too. They need to learn english or get out. Go home!

I’ve been more than patient…have you? This silence is more than “decorum“, it is cowardice, combined with a lack of conservative values. No “politician” who refuses to stand up and call a spade a spade, or stand for the truth, is worth putting or re-electing into office. Name names!
I don’t care if it’s not PC…I don’t care if it violates some misguided code of decorum…I don’t care if you lose cherry committee appointments…I DON’T CARE!! Show some grit. Show some leadership. Show some patriotism. Show America who the real villians are in this country!

Well, IIRC, at the time, the world, mostly the europeans, had never before experienced a war of such magnitude and destruction. The effects and results of tht Great War were so horrific that one might understand why it was called the “War to End All Wars”. So many couldn’t imagine that a civilized people could possibly engage in or endure nor survive such a conflict at that level of barbarism ever again.
It only took about 20 years to prove that they were wrong.
What is really maddening is we tried to tell these people that were hopey changy, that Obama and his menions were going to bring disaster to this country. But there was no telling them. Listen to the message, then look at his background, look at his friends and associates. Dig into the truth. Don’t be a sucker for a guilt trip, or fall for a “first in History” speech. “first latino, first woman, first black, first anything!! I mean so what? Will they be a good leader, or will they sell us out. Remember this … Remember what the democrats do when they get into power. I have never in all my life, (I’m almost 74) I have never seen anything even near this. I have never seen our country on the verge of falling, because of enemies within.

It’s enlightening to search politicians’ speeches for the words “sovereign” and “sovereignty”.
Not many of them talk about it. A small handfull do.

This is precisely what progressives are trying to kill. This is what they plan to destroy as part of their take-over of the United States of America. It is at the core of their attack plan.
That kind of talk’s been happening here for 20 years or so. Sadly, there may come a time soon when someone takes it seriously enough to act on the call.
Errah, the importance of Hamilton’s words regarding unchecked immigration of foreigners should also be put in the context that he is the only founding father that I know of that was an immigrant. Errah what ICE should be doing is start with the folks theyscoop up and they get the first numbers to get back inline behind everyone there currently. They will be processed in order of these numbers. Hand the numbers out at border crossings going back into Mexico. Expect a mass exodus by self deportation. Otherwise give them all amnesty but they are not ever allowed to vote!

Amnesty. A law-breaker, who is known to have broken the law, is ignored by police, and is able to profit from his crime, by getting benefits and jobs. This person has children so it is the liberal’s belief that all should be forgiven and be allowed to continue to profit…for the sake of the children. I know a couple with children. He’s out of work, broke, lost his home, car and struggles to make ends meet on a daily basis, with help from friends too. Now, say, finally, he gives up and robs a Bank of America. BOA won’t miss it. He steals the money and spends it on his family. Based on the liberals’ beliefs, he should be ignored, and allowed to keep the money. Eventually, soon, he should be granted amnesty…again for the sake of the children. Evem if he is caught, he should be held for a few hours and sent back home, to rob the bank again, in 1-2 days. I see no difference between the two. Well, there is one, on 2nd thought. He speaks fluent English and no Spanish.
I’ve heard nothing but this same claptrap out of politicians my whole adult life…we need more immigrants and obligated to open our doors to any and all. No, we’re not obligated to do any such thing. No, we need people that want to become a part of this country and not stake out another province for their home countries.

Less than a mile from the White House stands a Granite Wall with the names of four of my friends on it. All four were serving in the US Armed Forces, though they were not citizens, but were going to be eligible at the end of service. They were given their citizenship posthumously. For anyone, let alone the President, advocate blanket amnesty is an insult to these and others that chose the correct path. Shame Mr. President, Shame.

I’m afraid that a poll showing 80-99% of U.S. citizens against amnesty would have absolutely no bearing on the decisions made in D.C.. They have elevated their thinking that only what they want is valid and we (those pesky taxpayers) should have no voice.

Was over at Newsmax reading Dick Morris’ take on the fight that ‘Bambi wants over immigration, since it’s too late to push it through. However, some of his other takes sound just like you and I pounding our heads against walls. No amnesty, but a guest worker program (I’m guessing they get to go home every now and then for a spell), fair wages with the employer footing the bill for healthcare, severe penalties for employers found hiring them (failed to mention so many are sub-contracted out), and when the jobs dry up they’ll self deport.
Barrythemessiah wants amnesty knowing full well that when they are legal and drawing fair wages the employer will suddenly find it to the betterment of their company to at least hire someone that can write their own name. We’ll be completely supporting 12-20 million and their offspring because they’ll be deemed unhirable and on total welfare.

The millions we have here now have no loyalty to the U.S. nor wish to assimilate. It’s only a place to use on your road somewhere else. They relish in the arms of the same culture that discriminates against them, fails to provide education and medical, and will do everything they can to make the new country just like the old one.
I’m told thousands have gone on to Canada. Do they fly the Mexican/Central/South American flags there too? Does Canada, or any other country they’ve immigrated provide bilingual education for their children? Do those other countries qualify them for welfare and other benefits? Are they arrogant and bold enough to hold marches demanding the same rights as citizens of those countries? I’m curious to know if they stomp all over the other countries they’ve invaded differently than they do when they come here?
