Jobless Claims Rise (All Together Now…) ‘Unexpectedly’

Just about the only thing we can fully expect concerning the economy is the term “unexpectedly” being applied to reports about a rise in jobless claims:

Weekly jobless claims rise unexpectedly

More Americans than expected filed initial jobless claims last week, as job creation remains stubbornly sluggish.

Claims increased 13,000, to 472,000, while forecasters expected a slight drop to about 455,000 from the previous week’s seasonally adjusted 457,000, according to Labor Department figures released Thursday.

Job numbers for June are expected Friday morning and could show a bleak economic outlook for the job market as temporary hiring for the census has ended. The key number to watch is private-sector hiring, which according to one private report will have added only 13,000 jobs last month.

This news should thrill Nancy Pelosi, because more people filing for unemployment is a terrific job creator.

Other headlines this morning:

–Sun rises in east, unexpectedly

–Joe Biden puts foot in mouth, unexpectedly

–Man being strangled turns blue, unexpectedly

–Government increases debt, unexpectedly

–President Obama reads from teleprompter, unexpectedly

It begs the question, who didn’t expect it? It must be those reporting on the “news” with unrealistic expectations of what happens when your economy collapses (2008-now) and at the same time, the federal government adds crushing burdens all around on private sector businesses, investors, and does everything they can to smack the “invisible hand” of commerce.

It’s more like “the man was down on the ground after he had a heart attack after taking economic-amphetamines for a few days. After we stomped on his head a few times, he UNEXPECTEDLY didn’t get up”.

This is just the reverse of the reporting we got when we had Bush and a Republican Congress. Then it was the economy grew “unexpectedly”. Our news media is the only thing transparent about our government these days.

The Dems and the media caused the inital economic downturn by saying we were in a recession, long before it was true. They expected to do the reverse once they accomplished their goal of defeating Bush and the GOP. Now comes the “unexpected”, it isn’t working. They did far more damage to our economy than they “expected”. People; we are in the hands of our enemies. None of this is by accident nor incompetence, it is by design.

For many on unemployment, they will stay on unemployment until it runs out. Then and only then will they actually look for and find a job.

Is it just me, or does this not add up? If claims increased by 13,000 from 457,000, wouldn’t the new figure be 470,000? Is this a typo?

    Or, just another ‘unexpected’ result?

The unemployment figures are just so much BS anyway. It doesn’t matter who is in power, they will manipulate them to their advantage. If you’re unemployed you don’t want to be reminded. If you’re not, you really don’t care because you know the numbers are bogus. Unemployment figures give the gov’t another chance to pi$$ on everybody’s leg and tell them it’s raining.

I’ll bet the true numbers are far worse than this.

Do the figures still include active members of the military. IIRC that was done during the Clinton administration to make employement figures look better than they were.

As usual, Rush’s comments on the employment debacle are the most comprehensive.

The only thing I can add is that the pseudo-cons over at National Review (Editor Rick Lowry and the pompous Ramash Ponnuru most notably) argued strenuously against using the employment quagmire in the 2010 campaign. Apparently the “amazing resilience of the American economy” would take care of the whole business by election day. Isn’t that nice? These people actually consider themselves knowledgeable in economics.
It appears the Republicans have listened to NR as they have as far as I can see no strategy whatever to use this appalling situation to their advantage in the elections.

More than disappointed. ANGRY more like it. But it wouldn’t be unexpected, given the history of the national GOP leadership. I wouldn’t bet a mortgage, much less a nickel, on how the GOP leadership intends to campaign this year.

If the GOP doesn’t use this and, oh, so many more issues, to sweep and clean house in November, it really is time for the GOP to go the way of the Whigs.

You have seen what 18 months of Democrat rules has given us; especially Democrat congressional refusal to address the corruption in their own ranks and the Executive branch. The DOJ has become a cesspool. Eic Holder is the equilvalent of Frank Nitti.

What do you think we will look like if the Democrats hold both houses for two more years? In Iowa, we have 5 representatives; four currently Democrat. We will be lucky take one of those seats away, because the GOP candidates the State GOP engineered through the primaries fankly suck.

We should have a slam duck for the governor’s seat. Now, I think we will not win it, becasue conservatives here have no time for the GOP RINO candidate.

    It’s depressing.

Battleaxe, you’re referring to the inclusion of under-employed (those who took lesser jobs to get food on the table) and those who’ve stopped looking. And your estimate is right in the ball park. If we look at such total numbers, there is a much bigger problem than is being portrayed by those in power.

In all fairness, there usually is a number of people who are chronically unemployed, underemployed and who just don’t look anymore, so in the past when unemployment was reported at less than 5%, it was actually somewhat higher. BUT, accepting that the real number is rarely used in media, the current real number is still much bigger than the real number of the past, which means we still have a massive problem, and I have no doubt Obambi is doing everything in his power to hide that. (I guess I would too if I were fighting to keep from being recognized as the worst president in history, a position currently held by the peanut farmer.)

As for gov’t math, what do you expect?

Yup, similar state GOP engineering here in California typically gets us RINOs. On the other hand, the Dems are sooo far left and/or just plain nuts,i.e. Jerry “Guv Moonbeam” Brown and Barbara “Babs” Boxer, I’ll willingly take a Meg Whitman and a Carly Fioriana.

I’m sure that the Prezident is preparing another speech praising HIS wisdom and the huge success of HIS economic program. Pretty soon we will be drowning in worthless unemployment checks. At least we can burn them for fuel. . .oh, wait, I don’t think they actually cut paper checks anymore. But, don’t worry, you can go to the bank after the government makes the worthless deposit to your account and withdraw a stack of worthless money to burn.

More than one have had to live out of their autos….these are not uneducated young people. They are professionals and have much to offer.

Of course, when I was her age, jobs were in abundance and I thought I had the world by the tail.

Perhaps, “Unemployment rises as Federal Govt hiring unable to keep up with private sector layoffs” or “Unemployment rises as more choose to stay home, watch cable and collect unemployment than take cushy Federal Govt jobs”

Perhaps if they offered high speed internet, cable tv, free beer and individual offices they could increase Federal Govt hiring and reduce the unemployment rate. Unfortunately they would want these people to do smoething at some point, like organize union thug attacks peaceful counter protests.
