Jobs Float Away: Economy Rigged for Failure

By Doug Powers  •  July 11, 2010 11:02 AM

Even though a judge slapped down the Obama administration’s drilling moratorium, and the ruling was upheld on appeal, the administration has pledged to continue on until they find a way to halt offshore drilling — purportedly until the cause of the Deepwater Horizon accident can be determined (which is like banning all trans-Atlantic crossings until we can figure out exactly why the Titanic sank).

Since no company will invest money to prepare to drill during an appeals process that remains unpredictable, rig owners are bound to leave for greener pastures, and they’ll take the jobs with them.

The first rig is already leaving the Gulf:

Diamond Offshore announced Friday that its Ocean Endeavor drilling rig will leave the Gulf of Mexico and move to Egyptian waters immediately — making it the first to abandon the United States in the wake of the BP oil spill and a ban on deep-water drilling.

And the Ocean Endeavor’s exodus probably won’t be the last, according to oil industry officials and Gulf Coast leaders who warn that other companies eager to find work for the now-idled rigs are considering moving them outside the U.S.
[...]
“As a result of the uncertainties surrounding the offshore drilling moratorium, we are actively seeking international opportunities to keep our rigs fully employed,” Dickerson said. “We greatly regret the loss of U.S. jobs that will result from this rig relocation.”

Too bad our own president and others who derive political power through increased dependency on government don’t feel the same way (a good example of the liberal definition of “fiscal responsibility” is spending trillions on government health care nobody wanted and then creating the economic conditions where everybody is forced to use it so the money isn’t completely wasted).

How could Team Obama be convinced to keep those rigs in the Gulf? Short of disguising oil rigs as offshore golf courses, mosques, US Muslim Space Agency headquarters or floating Planned Parenthood Superstore outlets, I can think of nothing that might entice the current administration to want to keep them right where they are.

As our demand for oil shows no immediate sign of waning, we’re watching jobs sail off into the sunrise, where workers from another country will be paid to drill oil that may ultimately be sent right back to the US and poured into Al Gore’s private jet — all while being placated by claims that it’s okay because at some point in the next 25 years our cars, furnaces and industries will be powered by kumquats and solar panels built with taxpayer dollars given to labor unions and the family member of a corrupt congressman. I’m skeptical of success.

Update: Don’t sweat any of this — apparently we’re all about to die anyway.

Somebody please pass the bacon-stuffed deep fried Twinkies.

There is a constant theme in all of Obama’s responses to the crises he exploits: getting bogged down in uncertainty.

There IS no moratorium in effect at the moment but the uncertainty of whether the feds will be filing one appeal after another makes keeping those rigs in place too expensive. The Diamond rig being moved to Egypt will be available again in 2011 but it could be producing here today.

It’s the same thing with job creation in America. Despite the fact that non-bank corporations are as solvent and capitalized as they have ever been, they are amassing cash rather than invest in future growth because no one knows what the “new rules” are. The most important details of Obamacare are still largely a big mystery but as details come out, they are always major negatives that amount to big whopper lies on the part of Obama/Pelosi and all Dems/Reps who voted for it. (What happened to the big “appeal Obamacare” campaign? Ryan? Anybody?)

The financial system reform bill amounts to nothing more than the creation of a monstrous new bureaucracy not guided by a clear system of new laws but by a political mandate to make it up as they go along. Dodd’s quote about having to wait to see how it works out says it all. Enacting good intentions is now good law. We need the clarity of specific rules. Regulators should be enforcing laws, not making them based on….. what?

Same with Middle East policy, Iraq and Afghanistan. For a president who believes in holding hands as partners in a world of global citizenry, how about making it clear where America stands? All Obama has communicated is that he can’t even be trusted to protect his own country’s interests. He is a very dangerous ally which makes him dangerous period. It was the policies of arguably the weakest and worst president ever, Woodrow Wilson that made WWII inevitable.

Yet, the GOP sits around twiddling its thumbs while foolishly awaiting November. How about defining a party platform? Here in CA, the RNC is backing Meg Whitman who is waging a Spanish campaign bashing AZ SB1070 and suggesting a promise of working for amnesty. Ditzy Carly Fiorina is just working on “girl power” when not getting test about her failure as CEO of HP.

If we can’t get any spine in THIS Republican party before November, God help us.

Political parties are always twiddling their thumbs. It’s individuals like Jim DeMint and Paul Ryan who make a difference, driving the thumb twiddlers in the necessary direction.

Get enough DeMint’s and Ryan’s elected, and the party place holders will move in the direction they have to move in order to keep feeding at the trough.

Polls are making it clear that despite widespread and still growing voter antipathy to Democrats, most Americans still blame the Bush administration for the state of the economy. For the GOP to coast into November without a clear and credible platform is major blunder.

When Americans discover that they just re-elected the very same people that angrily ousted in 2006 and 2008 and still led by the Gangs of McCain, the hopelessness will be palpable. I am growing resigned to it and preparing my arguments for a 3rd party starting this November.

If we can’t get rid of McCain and refuse to see what Sarah Palin is the new face of the same GOP one-world-without-borders establishment, what hope is there for the GOP? Why should we even bother with that party anymore?

Talk about childishly naive. What you are citing is pointless grandstanding. Why didn’t they propose those bills when they were in the majority? All they are doing is running up their ACU ratings supporting legislation that has no chance of passing. They may all manage to maintain 90%+ ratings, but that 10% is when they vote for breakthrough liberal legislation.

What you are describing is a largely bipartisan state effort by several states who will be bankrupted by Obamacare.

If the GOP was actively waging a campaign to repeal Obamacare, it would be part of their daily talking points and formalized in their party platform. Go to any Republican website and see if you can find it mentioned. And since no prominent Republican is waging the battle, what exactly is the MSM supposed to report? Do you see it reported in the conservative blogosphere? No!

That’s the problem with being a RINO, desperate rationalization of a hopeless case turns into a security blanket because you cannot accept that you are a die-hard supporter of the LA Clippers. It is unfathomable for true fans to understand why anyone would waste a cent or a second supporting that team. Same with the GOP.

If it were up to me, I would raise the minimum age to claim full benefits to at least 72, preferable 75. I would force all government employees to contribute commensurate to their income levels which are now double the average earning of the private sector.

We are a society hooked on unnecessary drugs. I am 57 years old and yet I am the only adult I know who is not taking any medication at all. How can that be? Everyone I know has an allergy or ADD or other condition making them dependent on constant medication.

Yeah, better to keep voting for the Assistant Democrats, the “lesser” of the same evil. How do you think we got into this mess in the first place? So many of us keep making arguments about the constitution but why won’t we use it? Nowhere in the constitution does it say that there will be ANY parties no less than there have to be two and that they must be these two parties. Let’s use our constitutional rights!

Those of us who don’t like either party outnumber both parties. We already have a second party. Let’s merge the Democrats and Assistant Democrats, stop pretending that we have two parties, and introduce a new second party, one that is already leading in the polls.

It’s all in the mind. We don’t have to storm any fortifications or kill anyone. We only need to muster the courage to place a mark on the ballot that is not a Democrat or Republican. How hard is that? Surely, someone with a moniker containing “thunder” can muster up the courage to take that kind of a risk?

I think the Republican party is slowly getting cleaned up from the inside out. Tea Party and these blogs help a lot. It won’t be done over night so we may be in for some more RINO activity.

For now, the Key is to get to know who is running in your local and state elections. Support and vote your conservatives in. They are the ones who likely will advance to national offices. Know your candidate!

Phil…this is the kind of post by you that really disturbs me. You don’t seem to like ANY of the current Republicans. Even a conservative like Ryan gets your blasts. Yes, we do have to hold them accountable. But if you don’t like even someone like Paul Ryan, you won’t like practically ANYONE. Politicians are, by their very nature, imperfect!! And you won’t agree 100% with ANY of them. You have to decide who most closely fits your beliefs. That’s all we have. Perfectionism isn’t going to win our country back.

Don’t mind Phil. He called me a troll once. And also a RINO. I got mad at him. But that is just who he is. Kind of a Jeckyll/Hyde personality. One day he makes great sense and has fabulous posts, and the next day he goes off on everyone. We have to take Phil as he is…a bit of a split personality, but can be rather lovable at times.

There is a constant theme in all of Obama’s responses to the crises he exploits: getting bogged down in uncertainty.

Let’s see. Every aspect of our economy hates uncertainty. If our economy stays a failure, Obama can impose more fascist measures to save us from ourselves and consolidate power in the process.

As far as the whole GOP/third party thing, you’re beginning to sound like the Bizarro Thomas. He preached blind allegiance to the GOP. You’re preaching the exact opposite. Here’s an idea. Let’s vote out Democrats.

And one more thing…I agree that Barack Hussein Obama is evil. I don’t use that term lightly. He is full of evil and it exudes out of every pore in his body, shows on his face and in his scary little eyes. He has purposely delayed protecting our coastlines in the Gulf and has cost thousands of families their livelihoods. Purposely. There can be no other explanation for it…unless you believe he is that incompetent, and I don’t happen to believe that. He WANTS to destroy our industries and give them away to other countries. He is destroying our sovereignty and our very way of life. HOW DARE HE?? Treason is too mild a word for what he is doing. I want him impeached and imprisoned! If the media would start doing its job, the truth would come out in all its ugliness for the world to see. I do think the sh#t is hitting the fan, but only little pieces of it. Things don’t stink bad enough yet for the masses to notice. But I can smell it all the way from DC to Minnesota!

The problem with these grumpy old men, they remind me of Walter of Jeff Dunham fame, is that in their panties in wad imaginary purity they end up with Democrats staying in power AND acting like its a good thing cause after all, the grumpy old men, they didn’t compromise.

Its a self rewarding dysfunctional behavior indicative of folks who are too full of themselves.

All one has to do to see this dysfunctional behavior on display is watch the inevitable lambasting that goes along with my stating I’ll be voting for McCain in the fall if JD loses here in Arizona.

These tightly wound negative grumpy old farts can stay home. We don’t need them. We need folks who understand conservative ideas and can bring constructive conservative concrete plans of action to the table. Not folks who excel and criticizing and judging anyone who doesn’t also have their panties all in a wad.

I’m confused. I haven’t registered Repulican in ten years, and I voted for McCain ’cause he calls us his friends and I like having a friendly guy in the White House. But how can I be a RINO if I’m not a Republican? Maybe I’m a IINO or a CINO but can’t figure out what a real conservative is by Phil’s definition – and I’m not Libertarian, so maybe I’m a Con-trarian! Oooo, that sounds bad. And if all Republicans are now really liberals, wouldn’t a conservative be a RINO and a genuine Republican now be liberal? I’m glad folks like Phil are around to tell us how stupid we are and figure all this difficult stuff out for us. My brain hurts.

That is the net effect. However the goal is to entrench them in power indefinately. They cannot get rich and powerful in the private sector. This is their ticket to the “good life.”

That was the sick joke about the Soviet system. It was an entire society enslaved and forced to live miserable lives so a small number of ruling elites could live in luxury.

Barry wants his rightful wealth and some degree of modest benefits (crumbs) for his supporters and all of us dependent on the system. He and his ilk will be living in luxury, playing golf and eating the best of foods. The rest of us will be eating the Michele Obama approved diet and huddling in our cold homes, because our energy costs will be astronomical.

As MM says, it’s all about the boodle.

Ever wonder what those 2000 page incomprehensible bills that no one reads, is all about? A little history … In 1933 Germany passed the Enabling Act … The Enabling Act (German: Ermächtigungsgesetz) was passed by Germany’s Reichstag and signed by President Paul von Hindenburg on March 23, 1933. It was the second major step, after the Reichstag Fire Decree, through which Chancellor Adolf Hitler legally obtained plenary powers and established his dictatorship. It received its name from its legal status as an enabling act granting the Cabinet the authority to enact laws without the participation of the Reichstag for four years.

    America’s Enabling Act, sold piecemeal.

This would be humorous alarmism weren’t for fact that SO many science-illiterates, Greens and (worst of all) left-leaning teachers haven’t bought into this as a reason/excuse totally shut down oil and coal around the world for windmills and (non-winter zone?) solar panels and burn-what-you-can-eat biofuels. It doesn’t help that the public gets a lot of their “science education” from the likes of The Science Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and National Geo (add Weather Channel?) with their dated, biased and uncritical green agendas. I hope we have pols sharp enough to head this global warming revivial move off at the pass.

This is another means to foce us to drive coal powered cars AKA plug in electric cars. 57% of electric power is produced by coal powered electic plants, so a plug in system is driving a coal powered car. Besides the lunacy of this, we will have to spend gazillions putting sockets in parking lots because these obamamobiles can’t get from suburbia to business centers and back on one charge. TYPICAL PIE IN THE SKY PROFESSORIAL BS. Obambi was in KC last week to hype an electric truck. The part he didn’t tell folks about was that the company got 32 million to build these glorified golf carts, which cost twice as much as the competitive trucks, BEFORE YOU PUMP ELECTRICITY INTO THEM AND REPLACE THE BATTERIES.
