John Kerry Gets a Long Face When Reporters Confront Him About Taxes on the SS Rhode Island

By Doug Powers  •  July 26, 2010 10:51 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

Several reporters caught up to John Kerry and asked him about keeping his newest yacht in Rhode Island instead of Massachusetts — a move that just by happenstance allows Thurston and Lovey to avoid a $500,000 Bay State luxury tax.

Kerry’s claim is that the boat is in Rhode Island for repair work. Everybody who’s ever been to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and the general Boston area knows there’s a tremendous shortage of businesses that perform boat repair:

For the record, Kerry shouldn’t just fess up and pay the extra Massachusetts tax. Kerry should admit that the exorbitantly high taxation he helps promote chases people away to other states — states bright enough to realize that lower taxes collected from more taxpayers, including wealthy out-of-staters like John Kerry who are running from the results of their own policies — is a boon to private businesses not to mention the government coffers.

If Massachusetts luxury taxes were, say, half of what they are, not only would the state have a quarter-million or so in luxury tax money, but an in-state company would be performing the alleged repair work on Kerry’s boat and paying taxes on that income to Massachusetts instead of Rhode Island.

John Kerry is swift-boating his own state.

It’s like Obama saying he was going to the Gulf Coast for vacation (pre-vacation), after he took so much heat for vacationing (Pre-pre-vacationing)in Maine, only to find out it is a one day stop over in Florida (probably to help his buddy Crist) then on to the real vacation in Martha’s Vineyard – but not to worry, Bo will have a direct flight on his own plane. I wish I had a job where I got three vacations in as many weeks – but then he has to deal with the stress of massive crop failures in the WH kitchen garden.

The Nantucket Boat Basin confirmed to WBZ on Monday that the Isabel has been docked at the marina “numerous” times this summer.

A spokesperson with the Department of Revenue who did not want to comment specifically on Kerry’s case said ownership by an out-of-state corporation wouldn’t matter. And, the law states if you bring the purchased property into the state within six months of buying it, you would be subject to the sales tax.

Coast Guard registration records show the vessel is owned by Great Point LLC, a limited liability corporation based in Pittsburgh, Heinz’s longtime home.

Therefore, Kerry owed the tax as soon as was first birthed at the Nantucket Boat Basin. And he has been evading the tax since that time.

I’m amused that Kerry even attempted to explain the financial and tax strategies behind a water craft that he didn’t buy with his own money, isn’t registered in his name and that he doesn’t even really own.

Recalling the majority of his answers during the 2004 Presidential Campaign, perhaps Long John Kerry should direct all inquiries to the real owner of the “Isabella,” but unfortunately, Senator John Heinz has been unavailable for comment for over 19 years now.

As someone who grew up along the MA/NH border, I can assure you that Mass residents avoiding sales taxes is big business in NH and ME where the border is cluttered with liquor stores.

At one time during the “Massachusetts Miracle”, Gov. Mike Dukakis stationed state police across the border in the parking lots of NH liquor stores to observe and assess MA residents for MA sales tax for the liquor they just bought. NH responded by arresting the MA state police for violating the interstate commerce provisions of the US Constitution and prevailed in court.

So good luck with MA in trying to collect those taxes from Kerry. As Judge Learned Hand famously said:

“Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury.”

Something Kerry and his socialists should keep in mind as they continue to complicate our lives with their ponderous, economy-stiflng tax schemes.

When my 401k loses 20% of its value, 20% of my wealth goes too. Now, where did that money go? Some was interest but some was my actual cash income. It was all invested in business.

When those business are taxed on their profits, there is less money to go to me as a shareholder. My value declines. The tax money taken (which was my money) is redistributed by the government to wherever they see fit.

I am positive they redistribute it to maximize votes which keeps them in power to do more of the same. Therefore wealth can be redistributed as well as income. Talk about a dirty little secret.

He and Lovey have their money so locked up that in 2004, they reported that their effective tax rate was about 12-13%. Remember the grief Ross Perot got for that?

While I admire those that can pay as few taxes as possible, and recommend it to everyone, it just smells (reeks?) of hypocrisy when it is done by the person working hard to increase those taxes.

Kerry reluctantly agrees to pay up . Note that the yacht had been seen docked in Mass, which means that he was in fact liable for the taxes, contrary to the opinion of the board’s resident self-anointed legal expert.

Um, idiot, I was simply going by the exact same story everyone else was, including Doug. In fact the whole premise of the post and subsequent comments (including any you made) relied on everyone having the exact same assumption about where or where not the boat was docked.

In otherwords, you have proven yet again what a tool you are.

As an aside, if Lincoln Chaffee wins the governor’s race, he’ll probably raise the harbor fees so poor MA doesn’t miss out on their tax revenue. Because that’s what “fiscal conservatives” do.

Since I didn’t remember posting anything especially provocative, I took a look back and found one post on this thread:

No matter what taxes they pass, they’ll include an exemption for themselves.

which obviously has nothing to do with you, anything you posted, or even, for that matter, Kerry, directly – so, as usual, you’re full of –it. However, I did find these rather…. unusual thoughts:

Sigh…again so sad to see your obsession with me.

I’ve no doubt that If someone went into your basement they would find some weird candlelit altar, covered in printouts of my most memorable posts, where you uhhh…relax with yourself… before retiring to bed every night.

I’ve always been of a mind that paranoia and narcissism are opposite sides of the same coin. You seem to demonstrate it.

Not all directions, txvet. They are squarely at you. Perhaps you should try harder not to earn them.

Since I didn’t remember posting anything especially provocative, I took a look back and found one post on this thread:

Who said it had to be provocative? Point is you read the same post and same comments and were obviously under the same impression based on the same limited information we all had.

So for you to single me out as making some sort of legal conclusion to this effect, which I didn’t in any case, is asinine. But asinine is par for the course for you.

I’ve always been of a mind that paranoia and narcissism are opposite sides of the same coin. You seem to demonstrate it.

It’s not paranoia if it’s true. Feel free to check out those posts I linked to and see how obsessed granite has become with me of late. Don’t think I am happy about it. I always found granite to be slimy, but now he’s devolved into creepy as well. I am hoping a public display would shame him into, at the very least, keeping it bottled up inside.
