Doug Powers gave you the heads-up last month about the First Lady’s lavish Spanish adventure. She touched down yesterday with her youngest daughter, dozens of friends, and phalanx of government bodyguards in tow. The luxury resort of Marbella rejoiced — and our hapless State Department blanched — as she embarked on her first “walkabout” clad in a one-shoulder Jean Paul Gaultier top:
The Obama administration faced an embarrassing diplomatic blunder today after it was forced to pull a warning about racism in Spain – just as the First Lady arrived in the country for a summer holiday.
Soon after touching down in the Costa del Sol yesterday morning, Michelle Obama was pictured taking in the sights of Marbella with daughter Sasha, nine, surrounded by a throng of bodyguards.
Staff at the U.S. State Department removed the contentious advice to travellers, which included the phrase ‘racist prejudices could lead to the arrest of Afro-Americans who travel to Spain,’ from its website on Monday.
She is on a four-day visit and will be staying at the five-star Villa Padierna, rated as one of the world’s top 30 hotels, with 40 friends. The party has reserved 60 rooms.
…Flags welcoming the Obama family were waving in the breeze as Marbella – often associated with reality TV and gangsters – geared up for their arrival.
A large billboard reading: ‘Welcome Obama Family: Thank you for choosing Marbella!’ painted in red, white and blue hung in the city.
The Chicago Sun Times is keeping tabs on all of Mrs. Obama’s anti-recessionista travel:
Mrs. Obama’s U.S. Air Force jet landed at Malaga on Wednesday; she skipped celebrating her husband’s 49th birthday with him. (Daughter Malia, 12, is at overnight camp.) Mrs. Obama pays for personal expenses — as do her friends who arrived on their own — but that only covers a small part of the expense. Taxpayers pick up the tab for staff and security at the exclusive hotel and most of the expenses for the plane.
First ladies often go on vacations, with and without the president. An issue for Mrs. Obama may be how many: New York in March; Chicago, over Memorial Day; Los Angeles in June; Camp David — sort of an extension of the White House — in July; Maine in July, to highlight Acadia National Park, and now Spain. Mrs. Obama is glamorizing Spain’s coastal resorts before her Aug. 14 first family weekend visit to Florida’s Gulf Coast, to encourage tourists scared away by the oil spill. Starting Aug. 19, the Obamas will spend 10 days in Martha’s Vineyard.

Tantaros’ article is excellent. A must-read, for sure.
What I find fascinating to watch is the tone-deafness of this whole thing. The Obama’s clearly have no idea that their regal lifestyle is driving a huge wedge between them and most Americans.
Most – but not all. There *are* liberals who believe that these are “just desserts” for winning. That Barack Obama and his family *deserve* the best, at all times, in all ways. About 20% of our population – 1 in 5 people – actually believe this.
At the other extreme you have 40 or 50% that find this behaviour appalling, and in the middle are the remaining 20 or 30% are the luke-warms. (these are the folks whose votes decide the elections – even though they are only marginally plugged into reality).
The danger here is the wedge between the extremes. The wedge between the minority who believe that Queen Michelle actually deserves this kind of vacation – at our expense – and those who are, as our hostess said “eating cube steak.”
It’s tearing at the fabric of this country in ways we haven’t seen since the 1960′s.
And those aren’t good memories.
But the Obama’s are not that far removed from the average American…

How is this different from the “Running of the Bulls” ?
They can spend their own money as they wish. But taxpayer money for security, airplanes etc.? This is politically tone deaf, and in keeping with all the pigs in our Congress who have a limitless credit card with our money. Flying a dog to Maine to vacation with them…at taxpayer dollars? Give me a break already.
But I have no worry, because I expect that the media will be all over this to speak truth to power, to be the citizen’s watchdogs; pointing out the hypocrisy by the Obama’s who are asking us all to sacrifice; pointing out that George Bush didnt vacation in 8 years for a fraction of time the First Family has in less than 2 years. The NYT’s editorial board is probably already finished with the commentary for tomorrow’s editorial page on this. Nothing gets by the American free press, who will be exposing this…any…day……….now.
Rogue: a few changes…
None of this should matter. Normally, a president and his family should be entitled to vacations, even in tough times. But this is from a president who told us Americans setting their thermostat at 72 are wasteful and inconsiderate and his wife who told people that they shouldn’t pursue well paying careers (after leaving a $300,000 salary for a do-nothing job). They and their party constantly lecture Americans as wasteful, greedy, and in need of downsizing our lifestyles. So in this case if people are offended and make an issue of this, they and their “greener than thou” party have brought it on themselves. Quit lecturing Americans, most who can only dream of vacations like this, and we will not make an issue of your luxury lifestyle.
The Obama vacation provided to them by the shared sacrifice of the American public. The Clintons had the white trash white house. The obamas are the social climbing, all for show, we’re not paying a cent for our world wind tour and party all the time white house. I’d call her Marie, but her taste in clothing isn’t that good.

I respectfully disagree. It does matter. If a president and the first family want a vacation, fine. But they, no matter which party they hail from, absolutely do not need an international jet set vacation to a foreign country on our dime.
We’ll pay for security for the president and family regardless, but taking a a 6 figure, maybe 7 figure vacation to Spain is way out of line.

Marie Antoinette indeed. These Obamas really do have contempt for America. The taxpayers and the goodness of the American people educated these (_*_) in ivy league schools, were decent enough to elect them as President and first lady, and these slugs abuse the priviledge at every turn. Parties at the White House, vacations every couple of weeks, arrugula and wagyo beef, all while the country is in a severe recession.
Given Michelle Obama’s past and current involvement with The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, I want to know with whom she is meeting behind closed doors and away from any cameras.

Rest assured that Katie Couric will not mention the Obamas Marie Antoinette sense of entitlement. The Obamas just think of themselves as better than everyone else except for their Hollywood friends. Say what you want about Bill Clinton. But Clinton would rather eat like a hog at Does Eats in Little Rock and slather that barbecue sauce all over the place than eat the fancy junk that the Obamas like. The trip to Spain does not bother me as much as the sickening trip to Hiroshima that the Obamas are planning. The Obamas are planning to apologize, on behalf of the United States to Japan for our bombing of Hiroshima. No president, not even Carter, ever disgraced himself this way. Just as Obama has made the Arabs the victims of Israeli “aggression”, the Obamas are now rewriting history to make Japan the victim of WW11. In the 2008 campaign, anybody who dared say that the Obamas viewed the USA as guilty as charged was branded a racist and McCarthyite. Now the true antiAmerican nature of the Obamas is out in the open.

I’d take it a step further: there are too many liberals in America who would feel perfectly comfortable living as subjects under a monarchy: replete with “royal families” (Kennedys, Clintons, Obamas), an aristocratic class that is above the laws that we serfs must obey (Kerry, Dodd, Rangel, Waters, Pelosi, Reid, Geithner, Daschle, et al), an all-powerful government bureaucracy the function of which is to preserve their power and privilege and a state-run media to preserve the illusion of worthy subjects happy under the enlightened benevolence of the nobility.
Seriously. For example, I’m pretty sure that at least two, probably three or four of my sisters would see nothing wrong with “King Obama.”
That’s why you don’t see them complaining about things like Chelsea Clinton’s “royal wedding” or the Black Marie Antoinette’s little soiree to the Spanish equivalent of Versailles. It’s why they don’t see anything unseemly about the Black Louis XVI hitting the links almost every weekend. It’s only natural to them that royal blood be accorded royal privileges.
Just as long as it’s their royalty who are calling the shots, of course. They have absolute faith in the notion of being worthy subjects of a noble king, who will take cradle-to-grave care of them in exchange for them accepting everything and not questioning anything.
These are the same people who won’t find anything wrong with it when one day the royal courts declare the Constitution to be “unconstitutional” look at the way they celebrate what just happened in California: the will of the people was just thwarted by an elitist homosexual judge and his elitist homosexual “expert witnesses,” and they’re celebrating.
Vacation from what? Working people get a vacation, don’t they?

There is not a major vacation spot in the U.S., including AK and HI, that would not have benefitted by that many high profile people and their security forces visiting. Why Spain? We have a major crisis with our economy and they throw millions away getting to Spain. Something stinks and I’m hoping MM picks up on what/why/where it does?
Outside of the Obama entouraqe, I see a lot of white faces. This racist tea party thing must be going international.
Even the UK papers are calling Lady O “a modern-day Marie Antoinette”. I think we need a new apology tour.
Two simple questions need answering;
1) How much of the yearly entertainment budget has Family Obama spent in the first 12 months of his rule, and YTD?
2) Does unspent entertainment allowances (if any) get to be carried over year after year?
Okay, perhaps one more question; Do the entertainment expenses get to be re-catoregized as “community outreach”, or diplomatic necessity, or some other creative label, in order to circumvent allowance limits?
I don’t care to compare to other administration’s expenditures, since it wouldn’t be fair to the Obamas, and we know that no administration has partied more since the Family Clinton.
We haven’t seen a recession this bad since the times of FDR, or so we keep getting reminded.
It’s getting harder and harder for me to not hate these people. People are hurting across this nation with job loss, inability to pay their bills and feed their families. This wanna-be Marie Antoinette makes me want to puke.
And to think that for the first time in her adult live she is proud of this country.

In my Michigan county we have close to 20% unemployment. 36% of residents are receiving some kind of state/fed assistance. Tourism is down by 40%. Even k-Mart & Wal-Mart are having a hard time making a go. All school districts are struggling financially laying off staff due to dropping tax assessments. 3 out of 4 homes in our area for sale are due to foreclosure. Two of our senators just voted for Kagan.
Sometimes I get so discouraged I could puke.

To be fair, the United States government paid the tab for me going to Germany with my wife, two daughters, a dog, and a cat, for a total of eight and a half years, provided us with a place to live, and shipped my household goods and vehicles both ways both times, and I wasn’t even President! Of course, they did require that I work for it, defending Germany and the NATO alliance and all. The fact that I spent more time in the motor pool, field training exercises, gunnery training cycles, and other deployments than I spent with my family or sightseeing shouldn’t lessen the largesse of the government in providing all that. In fact, we went to Spain for Spring Break one year! Yep, we stayed at a hotel in Lloret de Mar for four whole days. Had to pay for the trip ourselves, ride both ways in a tour bus with a bunch of other people, all courtey of the ITT (International Tours & Travel) Office.
Yeah, the Obamas can relate to ordinary Americans./sarc
