Recovery Summer Update: Government Motors to Invest $500 Million in Factory in… Mexico
**Written by Doug Powers

This is just their way of saying “thanks for the second chance, American taxpayers”:
General Motors will invest $500 million to produce a new vehicle and eight-cylinder engines in a plant in northeastern Mexico, a company spokesman said on August 4.
The decision was announced at a meeting on August 3 between GM management and Mexican officials, the spokesman said, without giving details of the new vehicle.
Well, the cars that people will actually buy have to be manufactured somewhere, I suppose.
Speaking of that, don’t criticize the Volt — it’s un-American.
Update: Email from another happy customer named Greg:
I’m not really understanding what the problem is. GM has manufactered in Mexico for decades, and their Mexican operations are very profitable. In recent years Mexican GM output has topped over 500k vehicles, mostly light trucks and Suburbans, over 70% of which are sold in the US. Not to mention parts from Mexican suppliers that are utilized in plants throughout the Americas. Are you suggesting that GM not invest in any operations outside the United States?
I realize Michelle loves to BASH the GM loans and anything to do with bad, bad, bad Mexicans, but does being a guest blogger also require you to be an asshole.
My reply: GM can do whatever they want when it’s their money, and they have for a long time and I didn’t criticized it — but now it’s US taxpayer money that “saved” them under the guise of saving the economy and American jobs, so yes, it should piss off taxpayers when they immediately pump $500 million into Mexico.
And yes, guest bloggers are required by law to be assholes, as are their critics apparently.

I would think the unions would be all bent out of shape sending jobs to mexico where, I don’t think, they have unions. Way to go gov. motors spending taxpayers money out of the U.S.! You are really below slug slimes.
L
You guys all misunderstood that “Summer of Recovery” meme.
What they really MEANT was “Summer of Re-upholstery”.
Just a simple mistake…
Nothing that the government-industrial complex does surprises me anymore. At least GM didn’t move its headquarters to Dubai like Halliburton.
The worst thing about this development is that not one member of the press will grill the White house about this development.
Hmmm…. intersting thought.
Congress has oversite of all Federal Property… and GM is now Federal Property….
I wonder if the drug cartels will take over the company and demand a ransom to get it back?
L
I vote we tell em to keep it. Or at least tell them it will cost 25 billion for us to take it back.
The kidnapping of Red cloud.
I wonder if the car they are building will have a built in explosive compartment for jihadis on their way into the U.S.?
This isnt the only thing that Govt Motors is doing:
It seems to me that GM is now using taxpayer funds (seeing that they have not fully paid back the bailouts) to make political donations.
I doubt they would take it over….they would not want to have to pay for the next bailout.
I had NOT heard about the CBC connection…
Wow…!!!
Post-racial…
They go where the business and the business-friendly environment is. Halliburton does more business in the ME than they do here, especially with the moratorium in the Gulf. They’re in the business to make money, not support socialized medicine.
So Americans will cross the border to do the jobs Mexicans won’t do.
Seeing how the (re)Volt turned out so well running on electricity, maybe they’re trying to see if they can develop a car that runs on refried beans! Call it the “Hot Tamale!”
A lot of that government subsidy money going into “green” technology and “green” energy is ending up in China too. Most of the solar panel money ($6-7 billion) ended up there. Looks like the plan is to impoverish us Americans and render us homeless so we will be motivated for those “shovel ready” ditch-digging jobs (that still haven’t materialized either).
The Brits have already developed an different alternative energy source:
Now that is really recycling.
The administratation has an entire department that already does those jobs…the WH Press office shovels tons of BS everyday!
Bend over America….and smile!!
Look at the bright side of this: The administration is actually spending money at an attempt to keep illegal immigrants from crossing the border. Some of them will work at this new plant, right?
Truesoldier said:
Damn, when that thing goes out of tune does it fart and burp?
Naw, it smells like fish and chips.
Yeah, but can they smell the difference?

HI TRUESOLDIER–#15. Nothing new here–watch the Mel Gibson THUNDERDOME movie to see how pig poop powered Auntie’s “new world”.
***
And I am waiting to hear how our advanced U.S. economy workers can compete with a Mexican worker making $10. a day. In an economy that is business friendly–and that does not provide many worker benefits. Better management here isn’t going to close the gap.

This would be “news” if they were closing the plant in Mexico and re-opening one in the US. Considering the billions of dollars that the US allows to be sent to Mexico every year by illegals what’s a few hundred million more TAXPAYER money??? Drop in the bucket…..
What cars so they make in Mexico?? Seems like a good target for boycott— but I bet they do not import those cars made in Mexico!!
Another day, another ditch to drive the economy into.
I don’t buy GM anymore anyway. Not since they started making Cadillacs that will fit in the trunk of my ’77 LTD.
My old ’82 Fleetwood was half the size of the Nimitz……..
No, but they will grill black tea party activists about an unprovable spitting incident.
Ever seen the French cars pictured in WWII?
Notice the cylinders on the roofs?
Methane, and much of it from manure digesters.
Of course, they were occupied by fascists…
Wait…
I should have posted this with comment #26

I don’t know, but I think the whole idea stinks.
Please tell me this is not true. I’m dreaming. If they can’t invest in America then the $0.5 B needs to go to pay off their debt to the taxpayers.
Where they will be producing 1957 Chevys.
I just had a thought about this car. Imagine what the gas stations (pun intended) would be like. The could hire bums and pay them in wine and rich food. This way they wold always have a ready supply of fuel and somehow I think that this would be even cheaper than what they have to pay illegals.
All Americans… just ask any illegal alien
The car I had in high school was a 1968 Ford Galaxy 500. It was primer gray and had a trunk big eough that I could put my surf board in….Now that was a car!
You beat me to it with your comment.
As to your question, yeah, they’ll work until they’re unionized.
Worker of The world unite. Thank you Andy Stern! When the GOP lets jobs leave for other countries, that’s bad. When dems build a car factory in Mexico, well, that’s good. Mexicans are oppressed. Mexicans do the jobs Americans won’t do. Mexicans need us to help their economy to take the pressure off the border. Mexicans won’t have their families divided if they can get good paying jobs in Mexico. Mexicans can build cheaper cars for American to drive. Quit your whining America. Can’t you see how wise this decision is. Now go away and be happy you have unemployment checks to cash. Bho bows again.
Now that’s memory lane! Ours was blue.
Wasn’t it great how those late 60′s Ford metallic paint jobs would just peel off right down past the primer without rusting? ’66 Mustang.
Just how big of carbon foot print will these eight cylinder engines produce?
Al Gore will not be happy!
Government Motors = GM
is now affectionately known as
Mexican Government Motors = MGM
no, wait – that’s already taken …
how about EFGM
Epic Failure Government Motors
Paging Michael Moore, paging Michael Moore:
Are you complaining about Obama’s car company not building this factory in Flint, MI???
And the unions – where are they???
Thanks Rogue for the laugh. Three cheers for the muscle cars. Now the gov wants us to pay for a rollerskate with electric motor. Doesn’t that scream “cool”!
Just because they changed primary ownership doesn’t mean they are planning on upping their game by producing quality vehicles with quality labor…they have standards, after all – really low standards
Given our direction, in ten years the illegal immigration problem will be Americans sneaking into Mexico to pick crops and do landscaping, because the resident Mexicans left those jobs for better jobs in GM plants.
Nice car. Probably the best thing that came out of the 60′s were the muscle cars. Nothing like an American Muscle car built with American Pride and plenty of power under the hood!
I wonder how many jobs this administration has created in *other countries* vs. how many they claim to have created here.
For a while in 10th grade I drove a ’66 Rambler station wagon that can be considered a form of birth control. It had a lite-duty automatic that would wind out in low gear to about 6000 rpm, then shift into high. Two speeds, no waiting.
My parents had one of those. It was puke green in color and had a license plate of YUD911 (pretty fitting license plate if ever one was created).
All us kids called it the Crud mobile.
I have only owned one muscle car -
1969 Ford Fairlane GT500. 390 cu. in., C-6 xmission, and it was a fastback. It had a 4 bbl. carb I could smuggle a family of Mexicans inside. I had traction bars and Mickey Thompsons in the rear. Reeked of testosterone.
If you think the electric car is bad check these out.
My grandfater had a 1968 Dodge Charger. When he died I was in college and found out that he had left it to me in his wheel. It was still stock with a 318 small block single barrel carb and still had the push button AM radio in it. I loved that car, till I made the mistake of letting the girl I was dating at the time borrow it and she ended up rolling it on an icy road in TN in the mid 90′s. The car was totaled (and so was our relationship).
Oops that should have been will (thinking about cars too much I guess).
Sounds fair……
My favorite alltime car was my ’67 SS396 Chevelle convertible. Hated that Muncie shifter, though.
The MSM will all over this, calling out Obama for bailing out GM then GM creating jobs with our money in Mexico.
Really… they’ll be all over it….
No….. really…. the MSM will be up in arms…
My Uncle bought an SS396 convertable in 1970 and it had that crappy Muncie Shifter in it. Always giving him trouble. So he went and had a Hurst put in. Big improvement.
MM, this is a travesty. Is there a blog that will focus on this insult and pols who are on this like white on rice? NOT FUNNY! This is November fodder!!

It’s just been announced on CNBC that Fannie and Freddie are re-introducing the no-money-down mortgage. Unbelievable.
I hope Charlie and Maxine take every corruptocrat down with them, especially Dodd and Frank.
After college, I had a Pontiac GT-37 standard shift, hood clips and truck air horn. Got asked to drag a lot.
And by the way… IF …GM had paid back the money, they would be free to build a plant where ever the hell they wanted to build it in my opinion. But with taxpayer money spent to save their butts, along with the butts of the UAW, they need to ask before investing our money elsewhere.
The main issue I have is the deafening silence from the left.
It won’t be long before Mexico builds a fence to keep us from sneaking in and working to feed our families.
*If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, those in D.C.(including the GOP) keep importing people we don’t WANT, and exporting jobs we do NEED!; Let’s throw them out in 2010 & 2012.
A Chevy Volt Slogan-Mania Reprise:
The Chevy Volt: Like a BMW, just without the W.
The Chevy Volt: Have you driven a toaster lately?
The Chevy Volt: It’s an FUV, where we put the FU in FUV.
The Chevy Volt: We like to call it the Vegan Vega.
The Chevy Volt: Pull the plug, then bust an ohm.
The Chevy Volt: The cure for the common whiplash.
The Chevy Volt: Discriminating shoppers like Ron Middlefinger won’t buy one, you shouldn’t either.
The Chevy Volt: Bob Seger:”Like A Sandcastle”.
The Chevy Volt; The girls dig it, but don’t bury the battery.
Well, since over 50% of the populace with jobs work for the government, they will be required to buy GM to go along with their required health insurance and required Michael Moore movie tickets and…
The unions own 55% GM.Obama gave it to them
So they’re going to build Volts in Michigan, and 8-cylinder gas vehicles in Mexico? Something has to be wrong with that picture.
While we are also on the subject of cars of the 60′s I remember the huge back seats.
Plenty of room to……
Some of us had cars that were “chick magnets” before the term was even coined. Oh the days of being on the leading edge.
Sigh…..
They won’t need to. They actually enforce their immigration laws.
The wife drives a Ford Fusion made in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Reliability and QA-wise, the Hermosillo plant is the best Ford has. Their second-best plant is in Brazil. Makes me think that they should shut down Detroit altogether. GM could re-open plants in Oklahoma City and other places, maybe even have non-union plants.
The term may not have been coined, but guys were familiar with the concept long before that.
LOL…no kidding. My 68′ Ford Galaxy 500 was bigger than my first apartment!
I’ll bet that when they got the money, they were “urged” to make those donations.
GM obviously doesn’t need our money anymore. We need to be pounding our Senators and Congresspeople to call the loan(s) now!
’77 LTD 2 door
Back seat big enough for Al Gore to do a threesome with Star Jones AND Anna Nicole Smith.
Ok, beat that………
GM: “Quid pro quo, Clarice….“
If the future is 41K electric cars that seat 4, why does GM need to spend 500mil on V8′s and some unspecified vehicle.
So, I guess the family needs to eat a lot of beans/fiber the day before they go on vacation?
good post, tks.
Good question, like the answer to that one.
Once again showing their true colors…commie RED.
Well one way to look at it, at least the taxpayer money didn’t go into Michelle Obama’s travel and vacation fund. So it is an improvement.
I wonder if Mexican workers get to pay into the UAW retirement fund?
Does anybody think the union workers didn’t know what they were doing to GM with benefit demands wasn’t terminal?
What will happen if thousands of unemployed Americans poor across the southern border to find work at the new GM factory in Mexico? Will there be an outcry by Mexicans that illegal Americans are stealing Mexican jobs? After all, the poor undocumented Americans would only be trying to find a better life for themselves and their families…
There was the 1956 Oldsmobile Holiday 4-Door Coupe with the 354 cubic inch Rocket V-8 and a four-barrel carb. It was like twin beds flying in formation, a great double-date car!
ECS
my tweet transfer;
“Screw the Bond Holders, put gov’t & unions in charge and they go all capitalistic on you? CHEAPER 2 build CARS in MEXICO”
Words fail me (and only partly because of decency of language rules here) in characterizing what Government Motors has done. Suffice it to say, I am NOT cheering this latest knife thrust to the US taxpayer. Especially after political donations were made even though Govt Motors are effectively nationalized.
Name of the “new vehicle” model? It’s obvious: FU2.
Government Motors. Says it all.
Look, Silao as well as Lansing are two of GM’s newer facilities. They need to be maintained. Last I checked both facilities turn out high-quality, high demand vehicles; CTS and varieties at Lansing and the Avalanche and the high dollar Escalade EXT down in Silao. Millions of tons of American-manufactured parts are freighted down to Silao for assembly into two of my all-time favorite vehicles. If you’ve never driven an Avalanche, do yourself a favor and check them out. The companies moving the freight are American employing hundreds of thousands of Americans. I agree with about 95% of Michelle and Doug’s positions but with so many opportunities provided by this administration we need to prioritize our ire and angst.
