Milwaukee Teachers Union Fight for Viagra Coverage Met With Soft Support

Many public school districts have sent notes home with the kids begging them to donate pencils, notebooks and even toilet paper because the budget is so decimated. Congress is about to approve a $26 billion emergency funding package, purportedly so teachers jobs aren’t lost — that in addition to the original stimulus money that was supposed to do the exact same thing.

Given that, this isn’t the kind of public relations that will get the public to support dumping even more money into the bottomless union pit:

With the district in a financial crisis and hundreds of its members facing layoffs, the Milwaukee teachers union is taking a peculiar stand: fighting to get its taxpayer-funded Viagra back.

The union has asked a judge to order the school board to again include Pfizer Inc.’s erectile dysfunction drug and similar pills in its health insurance plans.

The filing is the latest in a two-year legal campaign in which the union has argued, so far unsuccessfully, that the board’s policy of excluding erectile dysfunction drugs discriminates against male employees. The union says Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and others are necessary treatment for “an exclusively gender-related condition.”
[...]
At least one lawmaker questioned why the union is fighting for Viagra while teachers are losing their jobs. A consultant for the school board has estimated that reinstating the drug benefit would cost $786,000 per year — the cost to keep perhaps a dozen first-year teachers employed.

Just because math is hard doesn’t mean the teacher has to be.

Somehow the district got along without Viagra coverage until 2002, but now of course the teachers union is claiming this is a “health issue” because “erectile dysfunction has been linked to heart disease and prostate cancer.”

Does the teachers union know what else causes health problems? Being taxpayers who are already being soaked for every penny and watching their kids and grandkids being charged for the remainder due to irresponsible, undisciplined spending including drugs that allow Mr. Wilson in Social Studies to serve as his own kickstand.

They seem to forget that we’re talking about Viagra for school teachers. Sure, it’s probably not work-related in most cases, but I would be concerned if my babysitter demanded that part of her compensation package included KY Jelly, so I hope the teachers union can understand the parental uneasiness that their fight for Viagra for teachers might cause — not that they care.

Clearly these teachers condone nanny state philosophies. This is a case of “I want everything as long as I don’t have to pay for it. Too bad the focus isn’t on educating students. What poor roll models teachers have become by over demanding perks and allowing unions to bully tax payers into submission. School children are being held hostage by a bunch union thugs and whimpy educators. With teachers being allowed to care more about their pensions than educating, no wonder so many students are under performing. Good teachers need to separate from the rest of this group before all respect is lost for the profession.

Some years ago, the media reported on what a party-like atmosphere it was on the first day of school. Schools were competing with each other on that first day….pizza parties, other give-aways, one principal bragged about hiring limos to pick up students to bring them to school that first day.

The reason? Every school’s state money was apportioned depending on the schools attendance on that first day.

It didn’t matter about any other day of the year, and Milwaukee’s graduation rate reflects that, but on that first day, all the stops were pulled to get butts in the seats.

Perhaps we should look at how many students (most are not taxpayers) are getting screwed by the teachers. If this goes through, I expect the union to demand free condoms dispensed to teachers to “help prevent student pregnancy”. What a bunch of sick morons…

By the way, ED drugs are apperantly one of the most popular recreational drugs, among men. Most do not have ED problems at all.
