Report: Former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens Dies in Plane Crash

By Doug Powers  •  August 10, 2010 01:01 PM

It was reported earlier that a plane carrying former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens and ex-NASA chief Sean O’Keefe crashed in southwest Alaska.

CBS News Radio is reporting via Twitter that Stevens has died in the crash. No word yet on other fatalities.

Update: KTUU confirms (they’re confirming a friend said Stevens was killed in the crash, though that hasn’t been officially announced as of yet).

God bless the man and his surviving family.

I am heartily against, however, career elected officials, whether Demoncat or Republican. That is NOT how the founding fathers envisioned our government.

We have Sen. Inouye, and he has one foot in the grave, and the other on a banana peel. He’s been Senator since Captain Cook’s second (and last) voyage.

    RIP.

If I recall he resigned after the Democrats threatened him with charges and investigations.

After he resigned, the charges apparently were not that serious, certainly not serious enough to oust him from office. Which he would’ve won in the election against the Dem. But the Dems got him out early and got the seat by the threat and secured their majority.

Any long-time serving politician will never be completely clean, that’s the nature of politics. At least Stevens didn’t kill anyone or hide money in his freezer or take bribes (although he allegedly may have).

Plane crashes in Alaska are not uncommon. However, at least they found the plane. Some disappear in the wilderness and never found, like congressman Boggs and congressman begich. My condolences to his family. May he R.I.P..

Where does a guy who has been convicted in a kangaroo court, and cleared by a real court get his reputation back. Scooter Libby will never get his reputation back despite EVERYONE knowing who leaked the Plame name, and what this witch hunt was all about. They tried to get Rove, couldn’t, so they go this poor sap. These prosecutors (in the words of Karl Rove) have to get a pelt when they spend that much money.

Sen. Stevens did look after the state of Alaska which was his sworn duty. He missed death by seconds back in 1978 that claimed the life of his first wife. I’m thinking the Almighty kept him here to finish things still needing to be done. I’m disappointed by the blogsites and MSM talking heads hauling out rumors and accusations that were never proven. What a difference between the treatment of him and Sen. Byrd just a few short weeks ago.

Bless Sen. Stevens family and may he enjoy eternal rest and peace with the Father.

I extend my sympathy to Mr. Stevens’ family for their grief.
However, I have read enough to know Ted wasn’t above abusing the privilege of his office and he said some pretty mean stuff about Sarah Palin.

Sen. Ted did business the old school way. My dad was a diehard Dem in the 40s and 50s and had personal correspondences with Scoop Jackson and Warren Magnussen. Huge on national defense, building infrastructure, and social programs. And above all, bring home the bacon.

That was the way the game was played in those days (and now too). But when you outlive all your friends, and the political rules change, you will eventually be targeted by a younger enemy. But I am equally sure all Alaskans will mourn his loss.

Silver lining to the cloud that the O’Keefe’s survived the crash.

While, Stevens may have been convicted (later overturned) these charges are nothing when compared to Democrat malfeasance.

Where are all of the glowing day long vigils on cable news for Stevens? We had to endure a week of whitewashing for Senator Byrd! Why is no one detailing his long life and service for Alaska?

Alaska is a place where people fly at times at their own peril. It’s a miracle there were survivors. Must have been on heck of a pilot.

You couldn’t prove it with that flight. He flew into a mountain on takeoff, from what I heard.

Alaska is indeed rough territory for just about everything-and beautiful beyond belief. We are always sorry to see fatal accidents but it HAS to beat dying in a car crash in city traffic or in a nursing home. The last time we took a bush flight in Alaska the plane was one year older than me and the pilot was younger than my rifle–gotta love it.

Good bye you old crook-I hope you had fun along the way and made your amends. Rest in Peace Senator.

Ted did so much for the Great State of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. I have lived most of my life in Alaska and I want to thank Ted for helping to make it the most awesome state in the union. Thanks Ted, you can now rest in peace.
