‘Leave Michelle Obama Alone!’

By Doug Powers  •  August 11, 2010 03:21 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

Kathleen Parker has a column in the Washington Post that calls for over-reactionary American critics of Hope & Change™ to leave Michelle Obama alone and cut her a break for the Spain trip and other extravagance during these tough economic times.

Leave her alone? The First Lady is a proponent of taking one person’s pie and giving it to somebody else; She’s for the mandatory measurement and tracking of kids’ Body Mass Index; She promotes the bill that regulates and will ultimately decimate our health insurance options. The list goes on. Don’t criticize Michelle Obama? When she leaves me alone, then believe me, I’ll be more than happy to return the favor — in good times or in bad.

Until then, all I can do is ask her defenders who are saying the cost of the trip didn’t even put a dent in the treasury, “How many poor people who are getting screwed over by the teachers union bailout could $400,000 worth of food stamps have helped?” That’s a lot of pie that could have been given up so somebody else could have had more (frankly I can’t believe that the metaphor for wealth hasn’t yet been officially changed from pie to celery, but give it time).

That said, in this one instance, I am willing to cut the First Lady a break. I remember when a friend of mine in Detroit lost a parent and how difficult it was as we struggled our way through the grief process from our suites at Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz, Switzerland. And the financially-strapped relatives back home who we charged a good portion of the trip to didn’t complain one bit — as it should be.

Obligatory:

Unlike President and First Lady Obama, when their turn in the White House is over (please let it be after 2012), I will not speak of them again, even to blame them for their most intrusive, expensive, or both policies. I’ll just worry about the new Pres cleaning up the mess. Moving on.

It’s more than they’ve done regarding Bush, who I believe has yet to say anything (critical or otherwise) about his successor.

Kathleen Parker, faux conservative, is always a beat behind the rest on issues. She waits until she sees which way the wind blows, then delivers a trite column which, as in this case, misses the point. Laura Bush was part of a mission for women in Afghanistan. Michelle O. was on a mission for her own pleasure, and that of her friends and daughter, and to spend the money of taxpayers whom she is not proud of (remember, Kathleen? She was not proud of her country until Obammy gained the throne).

You’re right that some people are less aware of pop culture and less attuned to parody when they see it than others.

I find it (both videos) amusing and don’t believe that (most) Obama supporters would have that kind of hissy-fit (although I’ve seen some come close; a woman discussing the voter registration fraud issue and Acorn during ’08 election season comes to mind).

    Wrong again, KP.

Mrs. O had the choice of NOT going through with the trip – she and the WH “concievers” knew the visuals of an opulent vacation made during trying times would not go over well with taxpayers struggling to make ends meet, and they didn’t care.

And that’s the part befitting condemnation.

To rest after my whirlwind trip to exotic places, think I’ll go with my family and enjoy one of the ritziest areas in the U.S. – again, with the American taxpayer coughing up more.

I actually have no problem with any of that if you’re paying for it. But since the vast majority of monies spent is being footed by the American taxpayer….I have an enormous problem with it.

    Apparently, right there beside Laura.

I traveled to the Middle East with Laura Bush in 2007 when she helped promote breast cancer awareness in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. We also visited troops in Kuwait, as well as a group of women who, recently granted the right to vote, had run for public office.

The security around that trip was spectacular. Entire roadways were shut down for her passage; snipers were everywhere. Our own plane was loaded with enough artillery and shooters to take over a small country. Our hotels were palaces by America’s Holiday Inn standards. Because the media contingent was limited to three people — Greta Van Susteren, Robin Roberts and yours truly — we went everywhere the first lady went (at our own or our institution’s expense).

Perhaps if the looming economic disaster had been recognized at that point, Mrs. Bush would have faced similar criticism. As it was, the media hardly took notice of the trip, despite the excursion’s incalculable diplomatic value. …
Perception is everything in politics. And though Mrs. Obama essentially caught some of August’s free-ranging flak, she also chose unwisely. …as a political move, it could not have been more out of step with most Americans’ reality. The obvious reasons include the stagnant job market, the depleted fortunes of the middle class, millions of lost homes and, for many, the prospect of an insecure financial future. …When many Americans are scraping together pennies to finance a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese, the notion that a child must be treated to Spain’s beaches to celebrate her decade on the planet is a bitter pill to swallow.
On balance, the vacation was poorly conceived but hardly a crime befitting the condemnation. Perhaps of more lasting concern is the missed opportunity for the first lady to set an example of restraint and even generosity. I hear the Gulf Coast beaches could use a cash infusion.

    From the AP:

Longtime presidential friend Marty Nesbitt said in an interview that the idea for the trip originated with his wife, Anita Blanchard. Blanchard, a doctor who delivered both of the Obamas’ daughters, suggested that Mrs. Obama and Sasha accompany her and her daughters on a trip to Spain. Another Obama friend joined the two women, he said.
Noting that his wife’s father had recently died, he said, “They’re good friends and that’s a tough time.” He added, “When someone delivers your children, that’s kind of an important bond, I think.”

Your question implies that you didn’t watch the video before deciding that you were concerned that readers would believe that the girl in the video is an actual M.O. supporter.

I watched enough of it to confirm it was what I thought it was.

But, considering how I have seen certain posters here get fooled by very obvious parodies before, one can never be too careful.

But not enough to confirm that it was something that posters wouldn’t realize was parody.

As I said, I think you put entirely too much faith in the posters here.

Well, now I’m convinced that you didn’t watch the first 15 seconds of the video.

You made a snap judgment regarding the parody detectability of the video without watching it.

Now, you’re trying to cover that by claiming that the posters on here are really, really stupid.
