Stampede For Obamacare in New Jersey

By Doug Powers  •  August 23, 2010 01:43 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

A story at Fox New York entitled “Uninsured Slow to Sign Up for Coverage” helps demonstrate the “as advertised” demand for Obamacare vs. the actual demand:

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Just two people in New Jersey will begin receiving coverage Monday under new plans created by federal health care reforms.

NJ Protect plans are available to those who have been without insurance for at least six months and submit evidence of pre-existing health conditions.

The state will receive $141 million in federal subsidies to cover claims that exceed the premiums paid by the beneficiaries.
[...]
Two policies are available, with premiums ranging from $212 to $768 monthly, depending on age.

Premiums? Well there’s the problem. This free stuff is pretty expensive.

On the plus side, if you’re one of the two people in New Jersey who signed up, as of right now you’ve got $70.5 million dollars worth of coverage.

And here is the problem. I’m in my 40′s and even the $212 monthly premium is more than I spent last year for myself AND two sons. I have a healthy family and it is cheaper to just go see a doctor when I need to and pay cash.

Health insurance should be about buying a policy that kicks in when something catastrophic happens. I used to have such a policy until they stopped selling them.

It is not longer health care INSURANCE. It is take care of me every time I sniffle care.

The vast majority of young, healthy people are either (a) already insured through their employer or a privately-bought policy, or (b) not that concerned about their health-care costs and would rather pay the fine (if the proposed “mandate” that would threaten them with a fine is not struck down) than pay premiums themselves. This is pretty much what any number of people were saying would happen.

What if they offered government-subsidized insurance and (almost) nobody came?

    Pretty true.

Health care…however we pay for it…should be a MARKET transaction. Period.

If…IFFFFFFF…we elect to purchase health insurance, that should be from a group of MARKET PLAYERS, competing for our custom.

    Remember: BIG GOVERNMENT RUINS.

Markets innovate and raise the standard of living.

    It IS that simple.

How many needless tests are ordered because the patient pays little or nothing out of pocket, causing insurance rates to go up?
The problem of having preexisting conditions is made worse by having the cheapest insurance tied to employers. Obamacare didn’t fix that because the point of obamacare is to have everyone taking the public option. It is telling when free stuff isn’t wanted either. People will want it even less when the bureaucraps get more involved.

I think the BS was “affordable health insurance”. Even if the poorest were young enough to afford the $212 per month policy, they could not afford it. Since they cannot afford it, wait until they learn they will be taxed for not being able to afford it. Alas, me thinks the poorest voted for “hope and change” so, I find it hard to feel for them – sorry.
