‘Restoring Honor’ at the Lincoln Memorial; Update: Live Stream Included
**Written by Doug Powers
Today is Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” gathering at the Lincoln Memorial (this is also the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech, which you can watch here). Beck partnered with the Special Operations Warrior Foundation to sponsor the event, which starts at 10 a.m. eastern, and you can watch it live on C-Span. You can watch live via Facebook here. MLK’s niece Alveda King will be there, as will Sarah Palin and many current and former members of the US military.
We’re hearing a lot about people criticizing the timing of the event, calling it insensitive for having the rally on the anniversary of Dr. King’s speech — but since most of this criticism is coming from people who are calling critics of the ground zero area mosque over-sensitive, let’s move on.
I couldn’t make it to DC today, but there are a few people attending who are sending photos my way, so I’ll use this space today to pass along any pictures or stories that may be of interest.
Not to be outdone, of course, Al Sharpton has a counter-rally scheduled after Beck’s event around a reflecting puddle on Constitution Ave NW, and C-Span will carry that at noon. One person who Sharpton stood up for and defended not long ago will not be able to attend.
There are long lines (one example) at DC area Metro stations.
A while back, Bill O’Reilly reportedly told Glenn Beck that if he got over 100,000 people at today’s event, Beck needs to anchor his 8 p.m. time slot. Judging from this picture taken at 7:30 this morning I’d say Bill can go ahead and start sliding out of the way.
A friend just emailed to say there are probably a couple hundred thousand people there already — which, after we run it through the MSM Tea Party Crowd Size Re-Estimator, comes to about 12,000.
Here’s another picture from somebody there.
Update:
The live stream is up now:
Update II: Uh-oh, in spite of hundreds of thousands of peaceful patriots converging on Washington who will probably leave the place as clean or cleaner than they found it, the MSM already has their lead story for tonight: Tea Party vandals invade nation’s capital
Update III: Equal time — CNN’s live coverage of Al Sharpton’s rally. It’s a more intimate setting.
Update IV: Via Sister Toldjah, the New York Times is already spinning this as the Tea Party “claiming MLK’s mantle.” They’re hardly “claiming” Dr. King’s mantle — but maybe sharing it. And isn’t that what King’s message was all about?
Update V: Albert Pujols and Tony La Russa are there, but it was Palin who just hit it out of the park.
Update VI: Crowd estimates. It’ll probably end up being higher than those numbers.
Update whatever-the-next-Roman-numeral-is: Here’s a great aerial shot of the crowd.
Update IXEIDXXVI: If anybody is looking for people who are “dishonoring” Dr. King’s memory today, unfortunately they’ll need look no further than the memorial to Dr. King, because the Code Pink harpies will be there:

Also, 2,000-3,000 showed up for Sharpton’s rally. Wow, that means that only 1/2 of 1 percent of all the people at the two rallies weren’t racists.
Update ∞: Should we hold our breath waiting for the MSM to point out the apparent lack of diversity at Sharpton’s rally? Didn’t think so.

I’m glad you mentioned that.
I don’t have that large of an audience compared to Glen Beck or Michelle Malkin, but I, for one, did register a “peep of disapproval” about that…

“Black Liberation Theology” is Racist
Eww… Eww…
I know…!!!
Pick me…!!!
Then of course you have Sharpton and Jackson and you have to ponder why they were ever called reverends? Neither one has ever worked on behalf of healing. From their speeches, you can only be left with the message that somebody’s going to pay and pay dearly. Whether it’s affirmative action in the workplace, schools, housing, or medical. Truly an insult to those Dr. King tried to encourage.
I think Dr. King would be mightily impressed. Some outstanding comments by the speakers about him and his earthly work.
Don’t let the darkness get you down.
Actually, I am old enough to recall a time when I admired Jackson for his work, back in the day when his message to A-A kids and others was one of pride and self-worth.
That was also back in the day when he was an advocate for LIFE.
All that was sold for a mess of pottage…
I resemble that remark.
Thanks, RedPill. Great verses. I have to run for now. The garden is thirsty and we still have a few tomatoes left to rescue!! Have a blessed day, everyone!

I think you know the correct answer, but read the post to confirm that we agree on the answer…
Wonderful day. Great to see the crowd and Sarah. It was an energizing event and much needed. You have to admire Glenn and his courage.
Key points of his speach reflect the Mormon belief that our Constitution and other documents are sacred and God inspired. Glenn made them almost if not equal to Scripture. There were other aspects of his faith on view.
We can admire Glenn while not giving creedence to his theology. He does not hold to traditional Christian beliefs.
With that cautious note, I celebrate the event. I especially liked the prayer at the end and the song that followed.
Tawana Brawley will not attend either.
Well, old Pill, I agree with your points…and I’d add a few, but not just now.
Suffice it to say that Obama is better the heir of Ayers than King.
This was a comment about the Sharpton rally that really says it all…
“The rally included a short speech by Martin Luther King III, who delivered a rebuke to the free market policies embraced by conservatives like Beck and Palin, reminding the crowd that King’s final years were spent fighting for economic justice.”
So, Martin Luther King’s own son is a socialist. He must be rolling over in his grave. That is NOT what King Sr. was about. Absolutely not! How could they have skewed his message so badly???
Actually, scrappy…he was.
Like Gandhi and a lot of other people who had a lot right, King had some things BADLY wrong.
I thought King was a conservative Christian. How could he have been a socialist? Did he believe in reparations? I guess maybe I have a lot to learn about him!
http://www.progress.org/dividend/cdking.html
CAVEAT: I have NOT fact-checked this, so DO take it with a grain of salt.
Gandhi also left a legacy of socialism that India was burdened by until the early 90s.
They were men. Flawed men, like the rest of us.
Thanks for the link, Rags. I haven’t read the whole thing yet, but “guaranteed income”?? Good grief. He wanted everyone to have an income whether he worked or not? Like I say, I haven’t read the whole thing, but if that is what he was advocating, he was pretty delusional. I am disappointed.
I watched Restoring Honor from beginning to end. It was spiritual, inspiring and patriotic. Beck did a wonderful job. I laughed, I cried, and stood with the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. The justice brothers can’t hold a candle to what happened today at the Lincoln Memorial.
God Bless America
We were there and it was awesome! I LOVE how all the news media must, must, MUST do a report on the Sharpton event right after the Restoring Honor Rally. Sharpton should be happy that Glenn had the rally today or his (Sharpton’s) even would never have received this much attention!
It was peaceful and inspiring and we are already discussing how we can retain the inspiration and move forward each day to restore our honor and the country’s.
It used to be there were reasonable people who had grown up with the work ethic and who thought anyone would prefer to work for their bread rather than take handouts. They just didn’t know any better. They thought they were just talking about people having a guaranteed income even if they were disabled.
After all, who is to decide who is truly disabled and not just loafing?
There is no excuse for that kind of incredible naivete any more.
I hope you won’t be after a while, scrappy.
King was different guys at different phases of his life, like most of us.
Malcolm X was, part of his life, not someone I think much of, but there was a time when he was.
Abe Lincoln was NOT a saint. He was quite corrupt sometimes.
Folks are like that…
Yeah, you’ve got that right, Rags. I think back to my youth and I was a totally different person than I am now. Totally! I can’t believe some of the things I did and some of the attitudes I had. That is a good point. I need to be more tolerant, knowing that I would not want people to judge me by my mistakes!
The problem is that liberals like Sharpton say that if you invoke King’s 1963 speech you’re a hypocrite if you don’t accept his views on everything else. It’s a bait-and-switch game.
Beck’s rally, and the conservative movement in general, really do honor the views expressed in the “I Have A Dream” speech better than nearly any other movement nowadays. The fact that it may not comport with many of King’s other views is largely immaterial. Those other things aren’t what he’s remembered for.
I would add that I think it was a mistake to make his birthday a federal holdiday. If we wanted to honor him with a holiday, it should have been August 28, not January 15.
From the AP:
“WASHINGTON – Conservative commentator Glenn Beck and tea party champion Sarah Palin appealed Saturday to a vast, predominantly white crowd”
What are the odds that the AP won’t point out that Al Sharpton’s rally appealed to a predominantly black crowd?
Why is the MSM so dang racist?
Why is night dark…?
And absence of light.
Right now on the WaPo home page, the two most read stories:
“Sharpton’s ‘Reclaim the Dream’ Event Brings Thousands Honor MLK”
“Beck, Palin Tell Thousands to ‘Restore Honor”
300,000 vs. 3,000, yet you’d never be able to tell from the headlines. Pathetic.
It’s times like this I wish the media didn’t suck so bad. I’ll bet there were a lot of great human interest stories from some very nice people available at the rally today. But we’ll never know because the media is made up of leftist scum who made up their minds months ago on how to discuss the on-going tea party story.
I haven’t read all the comments, so pardon me if this is repetitive. I was one of the hundreds of thousands @ the Lincoln Memorial today, and it was most awesome.
There was a guy interviewing folks for an “international TV station” and each time he asked the SAME question, along the lines of “is Glenn Beck a racist?” (e.g., co-opting MLK’s anniversary). So tedious and predictable! One woman’s response really stood out – “we all own Aug. 28th, just like we all own 9/11.”
This one’s for you, MtsEdge:
The most popular eau de toilette of mainstream reporters the world over…
Obsession™…oh, the smell of it!
Ergh, there’s nothing like blowing the punchline. To be more precise:
Obsession for Journalists™
Wow, what a mistake by Sharpton, the left and Obama. They got out-flanked by Glen Beck. The contrast is well defined. Beck has a USA pep rally and honors the most well respected black leader ever. Sharpton comes off as a politico with only race cards to play and Obama sends Duncan to claim education is the new civil rights movement. Lead by the government no doubt. Beck celebrates the people of the USA, Obamites with a small crowd talk about even bigger government.
The main stream media is now irrelevant. There is little point harping on them. They lost he war over hearts and minds. Everyone knows they are not to be believed or trusted. Certainly the left does since they also have abandoned logic and truth long ago. Good job Fred. Never have the race baiting, big government left looked so impotent.
Wow I just read on the Internet that Dr. King Received $100,000 dollars to appear and Palin received $150,000.
I had attended the rally yesterday, and last evening had heard that the park services is placing the number of attendees at 1.9 million. If true, that would be larger than last year’s 9/12 event.
But what do I know compared to the vast statistical savvy of the fringe media?
If true, then that money came out of Glenn Beck’s pocket, not yours or anyone else’s. So what’s the problem?
The new Journolist has struck again: “OVERWHELMINGLY WHITE” is the catch word of the day:
http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=overwhelmingly+white
Statistically, the United States of America is, wait for it, OVERWHELMINGLY WHITE. It means nothing as evidenced by the halfrican american in the white house.
What speaks more volumes is the make-up of the justice brothers’ rally. Racist, socialist, bigots all rolled into one.
what?! no comments from RSS, nyk, et al? I thought Beck was ‘claiming the mantle of MLK’, to paraphrase RSS.
And c’mon–Palin was there! nyk usually has a comment or two about her.
I’m disappointed.
Well, sure not that overwhelming in NYC — and if we keep the borders and babies coming, more the same all over — along with our diluted culture. Unfortunately Sharpie and Jessie stupidly throwing themselves into the open borders camp is only cutting the job throats of their own flock. A good campaign slogan; For every illegal alien job goes another black American on welfare.

Love the God you worship. Love your country and live with honor.
Attempting to attack these messages by the Leftcomes off as so lame and so pathetic. They are so partisan and afraid of us, they would atack us for saying, “Love you mother.”
you = your Happy, need some of your coffee!!!
I looked over some of the comments regarding the NYT article of Beck’s “taking MLK’s mantle,” and they were utterly pathetic. The ignorance of the common liberal minion is jaw-dropping. They are so convinced that WE are the camp of hate and fear, and yet their own comments were dripping with it. Seems like all they can do is take their own faulty characteristics and project them upon their enemies. What a sad bunch that they are. The MSM would make billions if only they would report the truth, rather than the tired lies of a dying bunch of partisan wretches.
We might be that for them. We hate socialism, corruption, lies, deception and the big gov take over of our lives. We hate being called racist, bigots or any other name so that they can win a flimsy argument. We strike fear in their hearts because their rein of terror will be ending and replaced with something of substance. Real substance! They will be irrelevant and tossed aside. They have become like cornered wounded animals trying to survive inspite of having poisoned themselves with their own lies. A tipping point has occurred in the consciousness of the country and there is nothing the progressives can do to stop it.
Glenn said that Palin waved her speaking fee and that he was picking up the hotel tab for all the speakers.
