Today is Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” gathering at the Lincoln Memorial (this is also the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech, which you can watch here). Beck partnered with the Special Operations Warrior Foundation to sponsor the event, which starts at 10 a.m. eastern, and you can watch it live on C-Span. You can watch live via Facebook here. MLK’s niece Alveda King will be there, as will Sarah Palin and many current and former members of the US military.

We’re hearing a lot about people criticizing the timing of the event, calling it insensitive for having the rally on the anniversary of Dr. King’s speech — but since most of this criticism is coming from people who are calling critics of the ground zero area mosque over-sensitive, let’s move on.

I couldn’t make it to DC today, but there are a few people attending who are sending photos my way, so I’ll use this space today to pass along any pictures or stories that may be of interest.

Not to be outdone, of course, Al Sharpton has a counter-rally scheduled after Beck’s event around a reflecting puddle on Constitution Ave NW, and C-Span will carry that at noon. One person who Sharpton stood up for and defended not long ago will not be able to attend.

There are long lines (one example) at DC area Metro stations.

A while back, Bill O’Reilly reportedly told Glenn Beck that if he got over 100,000 people at today’s event, Beck needs to anchor his 8 p.m. time slot. Judging from this picture taken at 7:30 this morning I’d say Bill can go ahead and start sliding out of the way.

A friend just emailed to say there are probably a couple hundred thousand people there already — which, after we run it through the MSM Tea Party Crowd Size Re-Estimator, comes to about 12,000.

Here’s another picture from somebody there.

Update:

The live stream is up now:

Update II: Uh-oh, in spite of hundreds of thousands of peaceful patriots converging on Washington who will probably leave the place as clean or cleaner than they found it, the MSM already has their lead story for tonight: Tea Party vandals invade nation’s capital

Update III: Equal time — CNN’s live coverage of Al Sharpton’s rally. It’s a more intimate setting.

Update IV: Via Sister Toldjah, the New York Times is already spinning this as the Tea Party “claiming MLK’s mantle.” They’re hardly “claiming” Dr. King’s mantle — but maybe sharing it. And isn’t that what King’s message was all about?

Update V: Albert Pujols and Tony La Russa are there, but it was Palin who just hit it out of the park.

Update VI: Crowd estimates. It’ll probably end up being higher than those numbers.

Update whatever-the-next-Roman-numeral-is: Here’s a great aerial shot of the crowd.

Update IXEIDXXVI: If anybody is looking for people who are “dishonoring” Dr. King’s memory today, unfortunately they’ll need look no further than the memorial to Dr. King, because the Code Pink harpies will be there:

null

Also, 2,000-3,000 showed up for Sharpton’s rally. Wow, that means that only 1/2 of 1 percent of all the people at the two rallies weren’t racists.

Update ∞: Should we hold our breath waiting for the MSM to point out the apparent lack of diversity at Sharpton’s rally? Didn’t think so.

While we have the race baiters telling their followers that this goes aginst everything the great MLK had dreamed of, we have MLK’s niece taking an active part in this event. She knows what her uncle’s dreams were.

As a nation, we need to come together to protect and advance MLK’s dream and defend the Constitution.

It is impossible to understand why people are vilifying this event. What could be wrong with a peaceful gathering in the name of Restoring Honor? I guess the only explanation is that those who criticize this don’t know what honor means.

Glenn just said that both sides next to the reflecting pool are filled, the grassy area next to is is filled, and the crowd goes all the way back to the Washington Memorial. Sounds like that adds up to well OVER 500,000 and still counting. Of course, the MSM will say there were “a few thousand” there. The pictures won’t lie, but the media will. I guess the media is unfamiliar with the concept of honor also.

The Rev. Al Sharpton Was quoted as saying that Glenn Beck was attempting to hijack Dr. King’s memory and the civil rights movement. Dr. King’s legacy belongs to all Americans. There is no reason to stage a counter-rally except that grand standing over civil rights has long been Sharpton’s bread and butter. The Reverend Al Really needs to get a clue.

I must confess I am a little disappointed in the program so far. Yes, it is uplifting and honorable. But they really need to step up the pace and get something going that will rev up the crowd. I was hoping that maybe Glenn had gotten the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or someone equally inspiring. With a huge crowd like this, you need big energy transmitted in the music and the speeches. There is still time and I hope this picks up a bit. A lot of speeches get a bit tiresome after a while. I would have hoped Glenn would use his showmanship skills to keep up the pace. Also, it needs the old fashioned patriotic singing that people are familiar with, not just these long, drawn-out songs that repeat the same words over and over until you want to go to sleep. I want to hear “God Bless America” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Come-on Glenn…step it up!

When there is a liberal event, the cameras zoom in so the miniscule crowd looks bigger that it is. The “million man march” was closer to 300k-400k but the liberal media did all it could to convince the rubes it was over 1 million.

Now, when a gathering is held that does nothing more that to enunciate what our founders gave us; the freedom, liberty, and opportunity to be our best, to use our freedom of speech while we scorn the divisivness of socialism and liberal hate, to be true Americans, what we get from the hateful media is 20k attended.

The pendulum will swing back one day. I may not be alive to see it, but when it does, the long overdue death of socialism will finally be a reality.

You can argue about interpretations, but not the facts, the quotes…which are NOT out of context, by the way. Even if Tea Party members are right that any racist signs are those of mischief-makers, even if Glenn Beck had chosen any other Saturday to hold his rally, it would be hard to quiet the argument about the Tea Party and race.

Yes, a nice, peaceful rally that will surely leave the grounds cleaned up. We Christian Conservatives are nothing if not clean and tidy. Ha!! Seriously though, Glenn promised that he would have a fairly accurate and provable count. He said he would explain it on Monday. I noticed there were some planes and a helicopter overhead (in a NO-FLY area!), so I am guessing that he arranged that…I have no idea how he could have, but there definitely were planes up there!

Do they do ratings of C-Span? It would be interesting to see!

Just bear in mind, scrappy, MLK’s speech was PLENTY controversial in the day he gave it.

Everybody wants to think otherwise, but King came to divide. It had to be that way. The status quo HAD to be disrupted…just like now.

The only people who don’t like controversy are the people who like things as they are.

Glenn Beck is not a Tea Party member and he does not go to Tea Parties and he does not speak at them. The gathering was advertised everywhere as a “Restoring Honor” event. What part of any of that says “Tea Party”? These reporters are so inaccurate on everything, why would anyone listen to them or believe anything they report? Wake up America! God gave us freedom, which no man (or government) has the right to take from us. Those are indeed “inalienable rights”. Every time the world needed the US to save it from evil, we have risen to the call. That was no accident. God knows the heart of the oppressors in this government, and in this country that seek to take away our God given rights of freedom and the pursuit of happiness, and I believe, with His guidance, we will prevail in November, and beyond.

Yes, and as times get rough, remember that “all things” means “ALL things”.

No matter how bad things seem, remember this. Not all things are good, but to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose, all things work together for good.
