Culture of dependency: Record number on government dole; Obama to push for more
One in six Americans is now on government aid. Liberals consider this a sign that their system is working.
Via USA Today:
Government anti-poverty programs that have grown to meet the needs of recession victims now serve a record one in six Americans and are continuing to expand.
More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid, the federal-state program aimed principally at the poor, a survey of state data by USA TODAY shows. That’s up at least 17% since the recession began in December 2007.
“Virtually every Medicaid director in the country would say that their current enrollment is the highest on record,” says Vernon Smith of Health Management Associates, which surveys states for Kaiser Family Foundation.
The program has grown even before the new health care law adds about 16 million people, beginning in 2014. That has strained doctors. “Private physicians are already indicating that they’re at their limit,” says Dan Hawkins of the National Association of Community Health Centers.
More than 40 million people get food stamps, an increase of nearly 50% during the economic downturn, according to government data through May. The program has grown steadily for three years.
Caseloads have risen as more people become eligible. The economic stimulus law signed by President Obama last year also boosted benefits.
Cloward and Piven — and Peggy the Moocher! — approve.

President Obama is scheduled to deliver remarks on the economy at 12:30pm today in the Rose Garden — wherein he will push for more programs to shift more private citizens onto public subsistence in the name of “recovery.”
Update: Hmmm. Obama press event delayed until 1pm. Hmph. I thought his batteries were recharged…

Now if they could just be purged from the voter rolls….
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_15908205
Two clinics at University of Colorado Hospital — considered the state’s safety net for the needy — are turning away patients on government insurance plans because they can’t afford to treat them.
The recent changes at University’s urology clinic, which stopped taking new Medicaid patients this month, and the internal-medicine clinic, which is no longer accepting patients with Medicare, have left community health centers that care for the state’s poorest residents at a loss. The pool of specialists who will accept patients on low-paying government insurance plans is shrinking, they say.
Hospitals and doctors refusing to be slaves !? Who’d a-thunk it?
There is a theme that has been perking in my little brain for a couple of days; contempt and condescension.
I had not until this morning read Taranto’s excellent piece…
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704147804575455523068802824.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_MIDDLETopOpinion
But I had read Obama’s remarks on the Beck rally, which reek with contempt and condescension.
So, too, does this piece in the NYT. It presupposes that THEY CAN know a great direction THEY should lead the rest of us in, that WE REQUIRE that, and WE WILL FOLLOW, setting aside all our very well-founded criticisms, concerns, and principles.
So, that is the touch-stone of our time in America; the contempt and condescension of the elitists…the Collective…for the rest of us. It explains much.
Pigs will fly before that happens! Obamacare is DOA along with Obama’s reelection chances.
Add to that the bloated number of public sector union jobs sucking up tax dollars and equally beholding to their political overseers and the ratio is probably closer to one in four Americans.
(Holds out hand) Yep, it’s raining again.
One can only hope and pray, but as yet neither is a certainty. The Dems are not to be trusted and the GOP is not to be relied upon to act wisely on its own once in congressional majority.
The cradle to grave dependent welfare kids are now attending taxpayer funded colleges, and the biggest increase in food stamps and subsidized housing is coming in what demographic? Wait for it, minority college students, legal and illegal!
In addition to being a socialist, America-hating Black Liberation Theologist, obama is a real world-class jerk. He really is. Nobody would ever want to hang out with him. He is a total downer, a total milquetoast depressing wimp.
He’s never chopped firewood. He’s never fired a handgun, even at a shooting range. He’s never mowed the family lawn. He’s pathetic.
Actually, Thunder, people will PAY to hang out with him. That is how sick they are…
Bad idea…he probably couldn’t figure out the working end of a handgun – he’s no Barney Fife – and end up shooting himself…and that occurance might not be fatal.
True, but as long as he’s got himself to hangout with and idolize, he’ll never be alone.
Solution to the obesity crisis: FREE FOOD!
Only in the United States is this possible. (from the link above)
Long before Obummercare, here in Oregon if you didn’t have insurance or enough money to cover an unexpected illness or injury you would go to a hospital for help, naturally. The business dept. would right away get you started and signed up for Oregon’s state health plan, Medicaid, called OHP, it’s broke by the way. Along with medical assistance you may qualify for food stamps, housing assistance and more. It’s not hard to see why or how the “give me” roles have increased here.
Here in Oregon the illegals receive every possible welfare benny there is available. I see 1 and 2 cart loads of food at the check out lines being pushed by what is obviously illegals, can’t speak English and pay with the state Food Stamp Card…GGGRRRRRRR!!!
Train them to be parasite and they will become parasites. There is a difference between a hand up and a hand out. It seems that there isn’t a goal of getting people to be self-sufficient, but to be dependent on the government.
“Anyone who robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.”
By repealing welfare-to-work reform, and converting Social Security and unemployment benefits into extensions of welfare, the present administration seeks to turn that expression into reality.
The goal of a good parasite is not to kill the host.
Those who earn the wealth still control the wealth. The gov can’t take what the individual refuses to earn. I could expand my business, but I won’t. There is no incentive to fund freeloaders.
Actually, to the Leftists, it means their system is still a work in progrss – When six in six Americans are on government aid and/or working for the government, only then they’d say their system is working.

The cheapest foods tend to also be the most unhealthy and fattening.
And I’ll bet dollars to donuts (get it?) that most of those food stamps are being used to buy cr@p that is all sugar and calories and no nutrition. (See above-you can get more of it for fewer stamps.)
‘Tis true – only in the U.S. would the “poorest among us” also be the most overweight. Yes, their bellies are bloated, but it ain’t from extreme hunger!
And all thsi time I thought “fat Biafran babies” was an oxymoron.
thsi = this (slap!)
The only additional private citizens I am looking forward to seeing on public subsistence is Barack Obama and a sizeable number of Congressmen – out of office and living in a federal penitentiary.
Would you want to be around him with a loaded gun in his hands? The guy is as nervous as a whore in church — oh, that’s right, he doesn’t go to church — make that, he is as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Hard workers buck up for freeloaders.
Thanks RTater for the article. I heard that rumor and didn’t belive it. Although UCH is a separate not-for-profit entity which receives no state funds directly, it is still the only academic hospital associated with the University of Colorado. And the week before that, they announced a 400 million dollar expansion, but they can’t afford to treat Medicare patients in the urology clinic? These are amazing times.
Only 1 in 6 Americans?
Is that only Documented Americans, or does that count Harry Reid’s buddies?
One in six on some type of government (state & fed) aid sounds low to me as well.
Welfare
WIC
Low income housing
Free or subsidized school breakfast & lunch
Food stamps
Subsidized or free healthcare
Subsidized prescription drugs
That’s just off the top of my head so I’m sure there’s more.
