Shallow water rig explosion in Gulf of Mexico; meanwhile, in Greenland…
New Orleans TV station WDSU is reporting on a new mishap off the Louisiana coast involving a shallow water rig.
One person is missing after a rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
It happened around 9 a.m., and as of 10:15 a.m., the rig was still burning, the Coast Guard said. Rescue crews from New Orleans and Houston are responding.
Officials said there were 13 people aboard the rig, and all but one are accounted for.
Pray for the workers. Brace for the political aftermath.

Meanwhile, in Greenland (hat tip: reader Lynn S.), eco-radicals are obstructing oil rig operations and threatening more:
Four Greenpeace activists who climbed a Cairn Energy oil rig in Greenland waters were arrested this morning and are now being held in police custody in Greenland.
The activists first scaled the oil rig Stena Don on Tuesday. They attached hanging platforms to the underside of the rig where they camped out in tents with self-heating meals until last night.
Freezing gale-force winds forced the climbers and Greenpeace campaigners on the ship Esperanza anchored one kilometer from the rig to decide to end the occupation.
It took the Greenpeacers four hours of climbing in bitter winds to scale the rig from their hanging platforms up onto the platform gantry, where police were waiting for them. They were taken into custody and flown off the oil rig by helicopter at 2 am.
…Ben Stewart, communications officer onboard the Greenpeace ship Esperanza said, Looking out of my porthole at the massive waves, and feeling the movements of the Esperanza, there is no doubt in my mind that they took the right decision.”
“I hope and believe that this action will be remembered as the first step against our blind and reckless hunt for the last drops of oil on the planet,” Stewart said.

It appears only one was hurt and the others ok. Is it me, or is it a bit odd to have another explosion in the Gulf so soon after the bp one?
L
In response, a White House spokesman said “if we would just use windmills, this wouldn’t keep happening”. /sarc
Pray for the workers safety. And brace for more calls for a moratorium on shallow water drilling.
If this rig floats they might want to not pour water on it and sink it this time!!! It’s a whole lot easier to cap.
My first thought: “It’s a shallow water rig, and it’s probably sabotage”. Right about the first, the second part probably not. It’s a dangerous business.
Judge rejects Obama’s drilling ban, again. Another oil rig explosion. Isn’t this interesting?
Keep calm, guys.
I haven’t heard anything about this rig being a drilling or production rig. Production rigs pretty commonly have lightning-produced “problems”.
I see I’m not the only one who “questions the timing”… we shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but we also should not automatically reject the possibility of terrorism and/or sabotage.
Let’s hope they don’t destroy the evidence this time, so a proper root-cause analysis can be performed.
Zombie James J. Lee strikes… again?
I blame Al Gore.
Not getting excited. With this bunch, you automatically assume the worst, because they’re actually capable of it.
You know, I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but after the last oil rig explosion there were some that were saying that it was done purposely. Now I don’t know what to think. I mean, how many years have gone by with no explosions? All of a sudden, we have two within months of each other?! Also, the second explosion comes after judges tell Obama that his drilling ban can’t stand. It’s just too odd.
Your assuming some saboteur would know this. I’ll hang tight for more information, but there have been three of these leaks/explosions in the course of, what? Six months all in the same area?
Does anyone know how often this normally occurs – perhaps its just being reported on more since the big oil leak?
Dunno, something smells fishy.
Three. There was the big one. One smaller one after that (hardly reported) and then this one.
Any bets on whether there will be a refinery fire/explosion before the end of October?
Without full, corroborative evidence one way or the other, it would be far more foolish to simply dismiss the possibility of deliberate, sabotage-caused explosions, than it is to consider that possibility and fully investigate it…especially with the America-haters/domestic enemies/elitists/socialists/statists/collectivists/fascists/opposite wordlview-holders that are currently in power.
Ocam’s Razor kind of suggests that this may be a FIRE…not a leak or blow-out…on a production rig, which are NOT uncommon.
They are not uncommon on land well locations, either. They usually involve only the tank battery (holding oil for delivery), and are caused by lightening.
Wow, this will conveniently take the focus off the bad economic news.
I agree. It would be foolish to ignore the possibility of sabotage given the character of those who oppose oil production. They have proven they are willing and capable of performing criminal actions against anyone who tries to break their self manufactured bubble of blind lunacy. However, I’ll not jump to any conclusions and wait for the evidence to play out.
You are not alone.
The first one was curiously timed, and now another? How many domestic platforms have had explosions over the 50 years or so?
Why, now that domestic production is on the front burner, so to speak, is the stove being un, or under attended by the federal oversight organizations,
pollutedstaffed by Obama administration appointees? This seems to be more that a co-inky-dink to me. (Appologies to Rev. Jackson, or Homey D. Clown, or whomever.)
Whether it’s sabotage or an accident there are those in D.C. that will “never let an crisis go to waste.”
“Pray for the workers. Brace for the political aftermath.” Bullseye, MM nails it again.
What a bunch of mamby pambys!
“We want to destroy you, but first save us from our stupidity and keep us warm and dry!”
Does this guy know what the good ship esperanza runs on? I’m guessing not wind. What an idiot.
Looks like this is just an accident and didn’t involve an actual rig but a work platform. The timing though is what bothered me.
A couple of days ago when the LA judge rejected Ken Salazar’s latest bogus attempt to halt gulf drilling, I told an associate to look out for another oil rig incident. I am that cynical about what is going on these days.
After all, we have a government that just might call for the UN blue helmets to restore “order” in AZ the way things are going.
This just in…
Greenpeace moron’s self-heating meal (arugula and French stinky cheese) explodes oil rig in Gulf… dumbass now sleeps with the sea kittens.
Watch whale wars and you will see just what lunatics these greenviolence whackjobs really are.
As soon as a co-worker mentioned this “accident”, I wondered aloud if it was really an accident – or a saboteur? This is just too damned convenient; we’ve gone so long with no disasters of note in the Gulf, now we have two IN THE SAME YEAR? There’s something in Denmark!
A firehose would have taken a lot less time, and would have saved the helicopter fuel, too.
Exactly….

Eco-Nazis won’t be satisfied until we are riding horses, or bicycles, or walking everywhere, living in the dark at night with only full moon lit nights under which to read after sunset, and when you are injured, or ill, you cannot get medical attention because hospitals and medical equipment, using various forms of power, including power run by fossil fuels, will be inoperable.
They are orgasmic over abortion, “fixing’ themselves so that they cannot have children, saving the earth from parasitic human beings, and so forth.
They are certifiably mentally deranged.
Did you know you can refine coal into gasoline and diesel fuel for less than $30 a barrel of oil equivalent? Search Fischer-Tropsch process for more.
Wait a short time, the plants they have in China will soon be online. Then you can see how cheap it is to do.
Good thing the USA has about 30% of all the known coal reserves, at a time when we are all casting about for energy independence.
Do you get the impression Democrats don’t want energy Independence, but the Democrats are more inclines to tyranny instead of a great America?
This is a production platform in about 320 feet of water that has been offline since being damaged by hurricane Ike. The crew on the platform was most likely working to clean out the pipelines from nearby wells that “tie back” to this platform. Such cleanouts often involve large amounts of Xylene which is VERY flammable. there may also have been methane hydrates in the pipelines as well. Methane hydrates are water ice with natural gas adsorbed into the pores of the crystal lattice. they are very sensitive to both temperature as well as pressure. if the pipeline was plugged with parrafins and the xylene finally melted the parrafins and allowed a pocket of hydrate behind the parrafins to sublimate, there could easily have been an explosion as a result. during such cleanout operations the xylene vapors can get so strong that the workers can get “drunk” on the fumes and even pass out. proper breathing apparatus must be used, but even if it is the vapors can be absorbed through the skin.
When was the last time we had an oil rig explosion, before the BP one? This is highly suspicious!
Happyscrapper, it actually happens quite often, it is just that the Deepwater Horizon make everybody pay attention.
Mariner alone has had several accidents recently in fact.
http://blogs.chron.com/newswatchenergy/archives/2010/09/mariner_involve.html
Don’t forget Al Gore recently told his eco-nation to begin fighting. We are seeing the call to arms.
Where’s James Cameron? He has access to small subs. And as a movie maker, he knows people who can make things go boom. And let’s not forget the fact that he’s a left wing enviro nutjob.
That was my excuse, and I’m sticking to it…
I would like to know the closest N. Korean, or Iranian tanker to the gulf in the past week.
Perhaps, a warning should we destroy Iran’s nuke plants.
Economic warfare?
I think it is too early to say what happened here and will wait for more information. I do hope that the last worker is found to be alright and that all that are injured make a speedy recovery.
Phil #23 – I know, it doesn’t pass the smell test. Unless, we’ve all breathed too much of the fumes our noses can’t smell anymore?

This guy sounds a lot like someone who might, I dunno, storm the Discovery Channel office with a bomb strapped to himself and a gun and demand that they stop running programs that “glorify” human reproduction . . .
A moment of delicious irony was had a few years ago when an enviro-freak research ship sank off Antarctica.
It was the most pollution the area had suffered from in decades…maybe ever.
Obowmao: I’ve been fighting oil since day one!
Tarpon, you can do that with just about anything that can be burned. Wood, garbage, used cooking oil, plastic, yard waste. Anything that can be burned can be converted to synthesis gas which can then be converted to synthetic hydrocarbons. the question is only how much it costs to do it. it is still cheaper to refine a gallon of mineral oil than it is to synthesize a gallon of the stuff.
The reason oil is still quite inexpensive is because this idiot is lying.
We are not blind. We are not reckless. And there is still LOTS of oil.
If this ding dong stewart had one tiny clue what/how much is made from oil products that the ‘last drops of oil’ make to help his worthless life, he might re-think what he is doing! Oil is in almost every product we use is some form or another.

These Greenpeacers are always crying and moaning about saving the polar bears.
I think the police should drop them off on the nearest ice floe so they can personally deliver their message of hope to the helpless little creatures.
Heh.
J. J. Sefton,
Why don’t the tree huggers suffering from their derangement go live with the Polar Bears and “protect” them?
Good question.
It’s difficult not to be cynical and/or suspicious. These people currently in possitions of power and authority tell any lie and do anything necessary to stay in power. Blowing up a couple of platforms would be a small price (for us) to pay in order to make the world an ideal place for them to govern.
Al Gore was busy getting a massage and could not be reached for comment.
Bingo!
walterc, you get today’s Blue Ribbon!
This is like all of the liberals driving their bumper sticker covered Volvos with messages that say “F Big Oil” or some such garbage.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Environmentalist…
Just one time, I’d love to see a real reporter ask these green piece lunatics, “You’re protesting the drilling for oil but your ship runs on oil. That makes you a hypocrite. Why don’t you use only sail power instead?”
Then keep hammering them until they blow up and we all get to see how ugly they really are.
I agree with several others here.
If the first explosion didn’t do the trick, lets try another one. Maybe it’s time to consider some conspiracy theories?
I want to know if any of the 13 workers on this rig, who I am thankful are all ok, worked on the Deep Water Horizon. Then I will wonder…
Greenpeace does (or did) have a boat in the Gulf.
Slogans:
Greenpeace = Thru The Roof Home Fuel Oil Prices (and they don’t give a damn)
James Greenidge
Queens NY
Oh, and yeah, I am aware BP does not own this rig, so theory of same worker on both is probably nil.
Cause not explained yet:
Also, Mariner indicated that the fire — which was first reported to the Coast Guard by workers on a nearby rig around 9:20 a.m. (10:20 a.m. ET) — was not sparked by an explosion. It started at one of the platform’s seven active wells, the company said, though its cause is under investigation.
The greenpeace boat is docked in St. Petersburg today after “towing plankton” and watching whales and worrying about global warming due to oil rigs while picking lice out of each others beards:
http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/news-and-blogs/campaign-blog/in-the-wake-of-the-bp-oil-spill-disaster-news/blog/26348
It didn’t take the United Steelworkers Union to jump stupid and call for Obama’s job killing, drilling moratorium.
I see the same conspiracy theorist commenters from Hot Air made it over here.
It’s not a drilling rig, it’s a production platform. All of the different kinds of rigs in the Gulf work with dangerous materials and accidents are common.
Here are the stats from the MMS, via Wikipedia:
“The nature of their operation — extraction of volatile substances sometimes under extreme pressure in a hostile environment — means risk; accidents and tragedies occur regularly. The U.S. Minerals Management Service reported 69 offshore deaths, 1,349 injuries, and 858 fires and explosions on offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico from 2001 to 2010.”
That’s about 95 explosions or fires a year.
Stats:
BOEMRE
Oil Rig Disasters
I’m sure the shoot, ready, aim White House will be brushing off their arguments why we should be producing oil from shallow water rigs…or any rigs…anywhere.
How much difference do you think is there between Greenpeace and James Jay Lee? Was he just a little ahead of his time?
Common Sense, many of us don’t comment on Hot Air, so you can rest easy on that conspiracy theory.
No one has said it was ecoterrorism, but either the rigs, platforms–whatever–are rusting, the crews are accident prone, the media is reporting every little fire related to oil, or it is awfully coincidental that there have been more than normal fires/explosions for oil and gas production this year across the country.
One BAD, BAD effect of the Deep Water Horizon deal is that now people who NEVER gave a thought to the oil field are hypersensitive to it.
I’m telling you again, folks, this is just normal stuff. Do NOT start sounding loony over this.
There you go. Check out the stats!!!!
Lindsay, that report by CNN is, as usual, full of crap.
The fire was not near any of the wells and all of the wells on the platform were shut in at the time.
Have there been? What makes you state this?
Lindsay, dear, respectfully you don’t know jack about what you are talking about. Those platforms are under constant maintenance and repair. they are not rusting hulks that are about to fall apart at any minute.
I do so sincerely wish people who don’t have a clue about offshore oil operations would shut up and learn from those of us that do instead of jumping in with both feet, you just look like idiots when you do that.
The main “coincidences” in today’s fire are the Greenpeace Greenland oil rig fiasco attack today; and the fact that US District Judge Martin Feldman rejected the federal government’s attempt to have the court’s previous rejection of the drilling moratorium thrown out yesterday:
http://www.katc.com/news/gov-bobby-jindal-applauds-judge-s-ruling-to-uphold-rejection-of-drilling-moratorium/
Typically there is a fire or explosion of one sort or another in the Gulf of Mexico about every 4 days. That is under normal circumstances, things have not been normal since the Deepwater Horizon fire since only a grand total of four shallow water permits have been issued since then and no deep water permits have. this is in contrast to 10-15 of them a week before the blowout.
This is a dangerous business and everyone who signs on knows it. But on the flip side, how many jobs can a high school dropout with a GED get that makes over 60K a year?
Ah, flame me, y’all…and bless your heart, Rorscharch. I am not an oil rig expert like you Mensa candidates. I do read the news, however. If not just a “whatever, lots of leaks and fires all the time stats” then the MSM is complicit with the eco-nutters to make sure we know of each and every leak since Earth Day in April when the Deep Water Horizon first caught on fire and later sank.
Let me get my lists out (joking), but from memory, a rare polluting oil leak in Salt Lake City in June 2010; and, the oil leak in Michigan in July for starters:
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_15286216
http://www.csmonitor.com/From-the-news-wires/2010/0728/Michigan-oil-leak-polluting-Kalamazoo-River-Governor-declares-disaster-area
Lindsay, can you name 93 more?
Corkie, untwist your panties.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheat-sheet/item/rig-explodes-off-louisiana-coast/deja-vu/?om_rid=MR$hOk&om_mid=_BMgAOtB8Ugwjsg
Just ONE example of what you get when you have idiots writing about things they don’t begin to comprehend.
#75 Ragspierre, I agree. Thanks for your clarification of this issue.
Wow. 2 explosions in the same year. Must be a conspiracy of Greenpeace activists and Federal judges.
Somebody check on Lindsays 10-20.
T-Bone, my bra size is much bigger than that, no need to check. There is also plenty of WD-40, but not 10-20 somewhere on the hubby’s work bench.
Sorry, Linday, but you’ve failed to make this incident or any other recent oil industry mishap look the least bit suspicious.
Certainly, this could be the work of environmental wackos, but there’s no reason to jump to that conclusion yet.
Seriously, Ragspierre and Rorschach, thank you for your explanations regarding this incident. Sorry if I wondered about the coincidence thanks to the media reporting. I am also thankful that the workers are all ok. I am one of those bitter clingers who question, every single time, when airline passengers–like the two this week–tape their cell phones to a bottle of Pepto, and wonder if those Protestants are at it again.
That said, who could not question things (ecoterrorism) these days with comments like this on their agenda of Crap and Trade?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_gulf_rig_explosion
As I said before:
Look over here at the dangerous oil drilling! Pay no attention to the abysmal economic news. I guess calling Glenn Beck a racist wasn’t sufficient for diverting public attention.
Further evidence for my media diversion theory: unemployment numbers are released tomorrow.
There’s no way an incident like this can distract anyone’s attention from the economy.
Some things to take away from this story–
producing oil is hard, dangerous work. It isn’t the MOST dangerous thing people do, by any means, but it has its risks.
the people who work on the Gulf or on land producing oil are generally HIGHLY skilled, and good at what they do.
after a story like the Deep Water Horizon, people are made hypersensitive to even normal stuff, and the media is drawn to it like moths. An incident like this would be local news, at best, in New Orleans and Houston, generally.
the people in the press are often complete idiots regarding what they are trying to write about. REMEMBER THAT!
there are TENS OF THOUSANDS of producing or abandoned (and very safely plugged) wells in the Gulf and on land, and there are very smart people working hard to make the processes safer and cleaner than ever.
Amen, Rag. The media’s ignorance and bias are on full display today, and we can expect the administration to double down on their efforts to murder the industry.
I wonder what their carbon footprint was for being rescued.
