White House Pitching the Heck Out of NYT Hit Piece on John Boehner

The New York Times is running a front-page negative story about the politician who is a “perpetually tan golfer who smokes and accepts lots of money from Goldman Sachs and Google.” No, not that one — the Republican one, of course:

That sort of alliance — they won a few skirmishes, though they lost the war on the regulatory bill — is business as usual for Mr. Boehner, the House minority leader and would-be speaker if Republicans win the House in November. He maintains especially tight ties with a circle of lobbyists and former aides representing some of the nation’s biggest businesses, including Goldman Sachs, Google, Citigroup, R. J. Reynolds, MillerCoors and UPS.
[...]
Mr. Boehner — a 60-year-old, perpetually tanned, sharply tailored, chain-smoking golfer — is not as fiery as Newt Gingrich or as unrelenting an arm-twister as Tom DeLay, two of his Republican predecessors in top House posts. It is his reputation as a “Chamber of Commerce” Republican and his fund-raising skills — he has raised $36 million for Republican causes during this election cycle, more than almost anyone else in his party — that explain, in part, his rise.

Robert Gibbs is pitching the Times’ Boehner piece on Twitter like the Sham-Wow guy:

null

Boehner gets money from Goldman Sachs, Google and Citigroup? At least he’s in good company:

This table lists the top donors to this candidate [Barack Obama] in the 2008 election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organization’s PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families.

University of California $1,591,395
Goldman Sachs $994,795
Harvard University $854,747
Microsoft Corp $833,617
Google Inc $803,436
Citigroup Inc $701,290

As HAP points out, on the same day the Times published a negative feature about Boehner, the DNC released an attack ad against him. What a coincidence:

Late last week, President Obama mentioned John Boehner at least eight times in his speech in Ohio. It’s nice to see that the New York Times is running nicely with the Democrats’ coordinated effort — not that they ever weren’t.

The Times lists a litany of things that Boehner has done, all of which they’re forced to admit fall within House guidelines that Nancy Pelosi has helped set in order to create “the most ethical House ever.” So if the Times has an issue with what Rep. Boehner is allowed to do under current rules, maybe they should have a chat with Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker who helped ram through the Obama initiatives that are the reason John Boehner might be the next Speaker of the House.

As for the Dems, if they think, almost two years of all-out power grabs, record debt, takeovers, confiscations, union & special interest bailouts and spending that dwarfs even Bush’s “dangerous” outlays, that making an issue of John Boehner’s tan, smoking habits and green fees paid for by XYZ Corp lobbyists is going to help halt a looming landslide in November, then they just don’t understand the scope of the nightmare they’ve created and voters’ desperation to wake up from that nightmare.

In the end, what do anti-Boehner Democrats really have to work with? “He tried to block all that stuff that ultimately passed that a majority of Americans didn’t want in the first place”? I’ve heard better sales pitches.

I saw the Sheifer interview this morning with Boehner. It was likely the worst interview I’ve ever seen.

The whole thing was the white house talking points against him.

They are trying to create the illusion that R’s are going to fight against tax cuts. Sheifer was amazed (and thought he had an exclusive news flash) when Boehner said he would support tax cuts for the middle class.

The D’s (and Sheiffer) are arguing against themselves. Obama is arguing for tax cuts against theoretical opposition that doesn’t exist. Surprise, R’s like tax cuts.

Then Sheiffer went into a strange diatribe about Boehner smoking cigarettes. I assume he was expecting Boehner to say Obama did it too, but he didn’t. . . Sheiffer offered that information himself.

Again, it was the worst interview I have ever seen by the interviewer. He was no more than a tool of the Obama White House. He shouldn’t have been passed over for anchor after Dan Rather, but he’s a much better anchor than interviewer.

That interview was pathetic and Bob should be professional and objective enough to recognize what he is doing. He is doing himself a disservice.

I’m glad the Dems think this new plan will work for them – it won’t – but I’m glad they’ve got this to keep them occupied for the next two months. Maybe now they’ll be less concentrated on spending money and driving up unemployment like they’ve been since taking control in 2007!

Not voting, or making a protest vote for an indep, or a dem is a defeatist (suicidal) strategy. November, IMHO, is the last best chance to turn things around for the Country.
