It’s baaaack: Reid, the DREAM Act, and a reminder about open-borders Republicans who support it; Update: McCain promises illegal students he’ll “resolve their issues”

I’ve been covering the bipartisan open-borders push for the illegal alien DREAM Act since 2004. Quick legislative recap:

Senate Republicans beat back the attempt to give special in-state college tuition preference to illegal aliens in 2007. It fell eight votes short of cloture in 2008 and was reintroduced in the House in 2009 to no avail. Democrats outside Washington have grown increasingly averse to signing on to such illegal alien incentives — especially as the Obama jobs death toll mounts and economic confidence plummets. I noted last year that a state-level DREAM Act failed here in Colorado when several Democrats crossed the aisle:

Democratic Sens. Morgan Carroll of Aurora, Jim Isgar of Hesperus, Moe Keller of Wheat Ridge, Linda Newell of Littleton and Lois Tochtrop of Thornton voted against the bill.

Carroll, after the debate, referred reporters to a statement on her website that said she could not support the bill “in a climate where the state is cutting or eliminating over $1 billion of benefits to the people and is facing a $300 million cut to higher education, which virtually ends higher education as we know it in the state of Colorado.”

Isgar and Tochtrop made similar comments about cuts to colleges, while Keller declined comment on her vote.

Newell, who was elected in November by a razor-thin margin, simply said “I listened to my constituents” when asked about her vote.

Now, via The Hill, Hapless Harry “I heart undocumented Americans” Reid has announced he’ll attach a DREAM Act amendment to the defense appropriations bill:

This work period, the Senate will consider the Defense Authorization bill. Along with critical support for our national security forces around the world, this legislation will address two other important issues that are long overdue.

Passage of this bill would overturn the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ rule for our armed forces. We will finally send a loud and clear message that everyone who steps up to serve our country should and will be welcomed regardless of sexual orientation.

We are also offering an amendment to pass the DREAM Act. This amendment will ensure that millions of children who grow up as Americans will be able to get the education they need to contribute to our economy. Students who come to America before age 16 and who have been here for five years should be able get their green card after they go to college or serve in the military. And many who have volunteered to defend our country can finally become citizens of it.

Reid might want to take a page from Colorado Democrats and, you know, listen to his law-abiding constituents.

***

Just a reminder about the open-borders Republicans who have supported the DREAM Act:

Soros Republican John McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act and reiterated his support at a La Raza panderfest in 2008:

Utah GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch is one of the original architects of the DREAM Act. So is Indiana GOP Sen. Dick Lugar. Other GOP Senators who have voted for the DREAM Act: Bob Bennett, Sam Brownback, Norm Coleman, Susan Collins, Larry Craig. Chuck Hagel, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Trent Lott, Mel Martinez, Olympia Snowe. Former Arkansas GOP governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is not only for the DREAM Act, but for vastly expanding tuition benefits for illegal aliens.

Harry Reid isn’t the only one out of touch.

***

McCain tells illegal alien students he will work to “resolve their issues” and pass a DREAM Act after he “secures the border,” which shouldn’t take long, he says.

No surprise at all.

How do illegals contribute to our economy? How are illegals entering college or the military if they are not citizens. There are international students but don’t they have to have a Visa or a green card to enter our country to attend a college? Should having a Visa to attend school automatically make you a citizen?
Why do illegals enter the military in a country where they have no allegiance? Could it be for all the benefits? Don’t they have to take an oath to defend the constitution and can we believe they will in times of war?

One excellent example, if you’ve seen the movie We Were Soldiers and read the true story, a Ukrainian man who came to America legally died in that battle of Ia Drang after his unit rescued the survivors of the initial battle. He wasn’t an American citizen but earned his place in Arlington Cemetery.

BUT, this is being used as another back-door approach to get every illegal in school to be given AMNESTY because “who will vote against our troops? (weep, weep) Why do you hate our troops?”

So I oppose this entire bill.

Here’s more on Roy Beck’s (of NumbersUSA) analysis and summary of this version of the DREAM ACT:

Even If You Favor Amnesty For Some Illegal Teens, This DREAM Act Must Be Killed

By Roy Beck, Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:43 PM EDT – posted on NumbersUSA

ABC quoted me last night as saying that there is no question that many of the teenagers who would get an amnesty through the DREAM Act make for “compelling” cases. But I’m also quoted saying that this DREAM amnesty should not be passed.

If the DREAM Act were actually limited to the PR rhetoric that comes out of the pro-amnesty organizations, there might be reason for a debate.

If you barely paid attention, you would think this amnesty is just about illegal aliens who are high school valedictorians. If you pay a little more attention you would know it is larger than that but for good students who are teenagers or college students who were brought to the U.S. illegally when they were toddlers. You would think that they don’t know the language of their home country, have no ties there and if not given a U.S. amnesty would be without a country.

    Here’s the real story:

No. 1: Not valedictorians — or even necessarily good students.

Any illegal alien who can manage to meet the minimum requirements to graduate from high school or get an equivalent degree meets the first test.

The DREAM Act is not at all limited to The emotional rhetoric for DREAM is false and misleading. This amnesty is NOT limited to high school valedictorians and other high-achieving college students who were brought to the U.S. illegally when they were toddlers.

The amnesty includes illegal aliens up to age 35!

And their arrival can be as late as age 15!

The bill is a giant fraud loophole. People can claim the amnesty without providing proof of meeting criteria.

Even the supporters of the DREAM amnesty admit that around 2.1 million people could qualify.

No. 2: DREAM does nothing to stop the behavior that put teenagers into their situation. It leaves the jobs magnet in place.

This amnesty has no enforcement measures at all. It allows employers to continue to hire illegal aliens, enticing millions more parents to bring their children here illegally and stay long enough for them to become high school students and demand another amnesty in a few years.

No. 3: DREAM leaves intact the chain migration system that will allow these 2.1 million illegal aliens to eventually send for millions more relatives.

Rather quickly, the amnestied illegal aliens would be able to get green cards for their parents. And millions of additional relatives would be able to start planning their applications and getting in line. This starts with adult siblings and moves on to aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

A large percentage of the illegal aliens in the U.S. today are extended family members of the illegal aliens who got amnesty in 1986 and also those in the six more-limited amnesties in the 1990s.

One byproduct of this bill will be an increase in child smuggling, especially if parents know their kids are their golden tickets to green cards for them…plus, does any one believe any parent of a child eligible for this amnesty would be deported? the parents will get a de facto “amnesty” while waiting for their windfall.

Plus, much like past amnesties, we can expect the lawsuits and legislative amendments to roll in on behalf of thos whose are ineligible to create loopholes or exceptions (if not already built into the bill), or just can’t meet the requirements, like graduating from high school or fulfilling the promise to attend college/join military. In particular, all of those people the Administration has granted indefinite leave to remain as “DREAM Act eligible” (never mind that there currently IS no “DREAM Act,”) simply because they graduated from a US high school 5 or 10 years ago, and have since entered the workforce or started families.

I can see the lawyers and advocates whining now for amendments and exceptions and waivers to the current bill:
“a GED or high school diploma should be good enough,”
“there should be no proof required of college/military – they should just be able to give their word, and that should be good enough,”
“it’s unreasonable to expect those who graduated 10, 15 years ago to go to college or join the military; those requirements should be waived.”

Also, does anyone beleive it will only stop with the current group (and certain retroactive beneficiaries)…and not keep getting extended into a continuous rolling amnesty?

This is a very, very bad piece of legislation – and it doesn’t do anything about the fact that all blame lies with the parents, who will ultimately benefit, consequence-free, from their (currently) poor choices. The only way I would remotely support this is if there was a provision that the parents and siblings could not benefit. The kids might not have had a say in their situation – but the same cannot be said for the parents.

Blackstone is a really bright guy, but we all have our blind spots. Palin endorsed McCain. Blackstone does not understand that in the world of politics a Palin failure to endorse McCain would have finished her. She endorsed him just 15 short months after being his VP candidate and telling everyone McCain would make a Great President. In that 15 months McCain behaved more conservatively than he had when Palin was telling everyone he would make a Great President. And at the time she endorsed him Hayworth had not yet entered the race.

She had no practical choice. And knowing what we know now, if she had endorsed Hayworth instead, it is probable McCain still would have won. McCain crushed him.

However …… if McCain actually votes for this DREAM garbage in a lame duck session, there are millions of us out here who are going to be demanding an outright Palin condemnation of McCain for doing that in such an underhanded way. Not just a condemnation of the vote, but a condemnation of McCain, plus, ideally, an expression of deep regret for having endorsed him.

McCain’s an open borders guy. That is one bad thing, but as bad as that is, pushing it through in a lame duck session is far worse. It will be getting through on the votes of congresscritters the People have thrown out.
