Obama Was For ‘Shovel Ready’ Before He Was Against It

From the New York Times, January 2009:

On “Meet the Press,” fill-in host Tom Brokaw wants to know how quickly Barack Obama can create jobs, and the president-elect promises to move fast. After all, he says, he’s met with a bunch of governors “and all of them have projects that are shovel-ready.”

Announcing his energy team, Obama beams about “shovel-ready projects all across the country.” Unveiling his choice for education secretary, Obama plugs his plans “to start helping states and local governments with shovel-ready projects.”

So many shovels.

All of them, apparently, quite ready.

Fast forward the tape of Progress to today (by way of Gateway Pundit):

In the magazine article, Mr. Obama reflects on his presidency, admitting that he let himself look too much like “the same old tax-and-spend Democrat,” realized too late that “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects” and perhaps should have “let the Republicans insist on the tax cuts” in the stimulus.

I can think of one shovel ready project, and I’m hoping it’s going to start on November 2nd.

Here’s a bonus chuckle from the same article:

“The mythology has emerged somehow that we ran this flawless campaign, I never made a mistake, that we were master communicators, everything worked in lockstep. And somehow now, as president, things are messy and they don’t always work as planned and people are mad at us,” Mr. Obama said.

Jeez, you tell folks that you can control the ocean levels and all of a sudden they start expecting miracles.

In a previous post, I mentioned the Ford Edsel. Here’s part of the reason the Edsel was a failure:

It was the first victim of Madison Avenue hyper-hype. Ford’s marketing mavens had led the public to expect some plutonium-powered, pancake-making wondercar; what they got was a Mercury.

Sound familiar? Except this Mercury costs trillions, only starts for union bosses and golfs a lot.

Reality bites! All this money got spent for nothing and now people are surprised that there is nothing to show for it. Spreading the wealth around worked sooooooo well.

One shovel ready project would be to clear to BLM land of brush that present a fire hazard to neighbors. But Obama would give that to aliens just as he did with the clearing of forest preserve land.

But what should seem obvious to Obama, is that states have had to pick up the slack for his failed policies. So whatever benefit he thinks the feds are adding, states must then subtract something else.

Fiscal responsibility must move in unison at the local, state and federal levels. What stands in the way? THE NEA and SEIU and Obama.

You have got Obama all wrong. What he meant is that America has to be “hovel ready.” By the end of his presidency, hovels are all the majority of Americans will be able to live in. Thus equalizing us with the rest of the world. In fact, he will be able to say that you and I live just like his brother.

The so called “Shovel ready” projects were a joke to begin with. These “shovel ready” projects were never going to be done by private sector employees or create any new jobs. In just about all 50 states, there is a Department of Highways that is just oozing with state employees. Each city also has a public works department that takes care of local roads. For every state project, the vast bulk of the work would be done by state employees already on salary and protected by union rules from any chance of the state or town being able to hire private sector employees. There was never any real work for nongovernment businesses or employees.
Second, much of the work that would be done by men 30 years ago is now done on a computer. And if Obama had a brain, he would know that you can not dream up a proposal to build a bridge (which isn’t needed anyway) and begin construction the next day. You have to design the bridge, test out safety standards, study traffic implications and purchase all the materials before you even begin to think of construction. The architects take time to do their work. The draftsmen need time, the surveyors need time. But Obama has never been in the private sector so he does not know any of this stuff.

Only the sign makers are happy. They were shovel ready. They also get the benefit of the edict to replace those nasty all caps street signs.
In bho’s world, jobs are generated by unions who pay people to hold signs and demand that the rest of us do something for the protesters. Having a degree in radicalism doesn’t make him qualified to be a leader. It is time for the left to start eating their own and they can start with bho.

    And by the way . . .

(President Obama) says, he’s met with a bunch of governors “and all of them have projects that are shovel-ready.”

. . . since there’s no such thing (all of a sudden) as “shovel-ready”, who were these governors who said there was? Let’s not forget the Democratic infrastructure at the state level that is also part of the problem.

Truthfully, 2-10 years for all that would be a vast improvement. If America had to endure EIS & NIMBY suits in its formation, we’d all still be toting our water from wells, making trips to the little house out back, and Wells Fargo and Butterfield would still be the big names in modern transportation.
