Obama Was For ‘Shovel Ready’ Before He Was Against It
**Written by Doug Powers
From the New York Times, January 2009:
On “Meet the Press,” fill-in host Tom Brokaw wants to know how quickly Barack Obama can create jobs, and the president-elect promises to move fast. After all, he says, he’s met with a bunch of governors “and all of them have projects that are shovel-ready.”
Announcing his energy team, Obama beams about “shovel-ready projects all across the country.” Unveiling his choice for education secretary, Obama plugs his plans “to start helping states and local governments with shovel-ready projects.”
So many shovels.
All of them, apparently, quite ready.
Fast forward the tape of Progress to today (by way of Gateway Pundit):
In the magazine article, Mr. Obama reflects on his presidency, admitting that he let himself look too much like “the same old tax-and-spend Democrat,” realized too late that “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects” and perhaps should have “let the Republicans insist on the tax cuts” in the stimulus.
I can think of one shovel ready project, and I’m hoping it’s going to start on November 2nd.
Here’s a bonus chuckle from the same article:
“The mythology has emerged somehow that we ran this flawless campaign, I never made a mistake, that we were master communicators, everything worked in lockstep. And somehow now, as president, things are messy and they don’t always work as planned and people are mad at us,” Mr. Obama said.
Jeez, you tell folks that you can control the ocean levels and all of a sudden they start expecting miracles.
In a previous post, I mentioned the Ford Edsel. Here’s part of the reason the Edsel was a failure:
It was the first victim of Madison Avenue hyper-hype. Ford’s marketing mavens had led the public to expect some plutonium-powered, pancake-making wondercar; what they got was a Mercury.
Sound familiar? Except this Mercury costs trillions, only starts for union bosses and golfs a lot.

This freakin Sock Puppet has given all shovels a bad name.
Can’t hide your nature.
Well, no duh!
Yes, sounds like a Chevy Volt
Buy a Volt, its like carrying your share of an operating coal-fired boiler in your trunk!
Just words, folks, just words. bho can talk a good game, notify everyone that he’s “present” and then deliver on nothing because that is for someone else to do. bho has done nothing except to show up and now WE, who knew what he was have to suffer the consequences of the voters who believed bho could deliver. Reality bites! All this money got spent for nothing and now people are surprised that there is nothing to show for it. Spreading the wealth around worked sooooooo well.
One shovel ready project would be to clear to BLM land of brush that present a fire hazard to neighbors. But Obama would give that to aliens just as he did with the clearing of forest preserve land.
But what should seem obvious to Obama, is that states have had to pick up the slack for his failed policies. So whatever benefit he thinks the feds are adding, states must then subtract something else.
Fiscal responsibility must move in unison at the local, state and federal levels. What stands in the way? THE NEA and SEIU and Obama.
Well this bho sure spent enough of our, our kids, and our g-kids money we have to get from china and others to come up with this little ditty!!! I just wish this bho would take a long long vacation to golf till 2012. Our Repbulic can really do without you this bho and those like you!

Errah, Its hard to buy a Chevy Volt when the local Chevy Dealer says “They may not be in for a month or two, but you can place an order for one tonight if you want.” Told him my leprachaun needs to sit in a child safety seat and it has to be able to pull my unicorn trailer. I’m taking a trip to Candyland November 3rd.
Shovel ready – they sure were fast digging the holes for all those signs: “Project Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act”
Don’t worry, Barry. You still have the knuckle-dragging teachers to get the kids in their class sing your praises. I’m sure that will make you feel better.
No, no, no, no….
You have got Obama all wrong. What he meant is that America has to be “hovel ready.” By the end of his presidency, hovels are all the majority of Americans will be able to live in. Thus equalizing us with the rest of the world. In fact, he will be able to say that you and I live just like his brother.
The so called “Shovel ready” projects were a joke to begin with. These “shovel ready” projects were never going to be done by private sector employees or create any new jobs. In just about all 50 states, there is a Department of Highways that is just oozing with state employees. Each city also has a public works department that takes care of local roads. For every state project, the vast bulk of the work would be done by state employees already on salary and protected by union rules from any chance of the state or town being able to hire private sector employees. There was never any real work for nongovernment businesses or employees.
Second, much of the work that would be done by men 30 years ago is now done on a computer. And if Obama had a brain, he would know that you can not dream up a proposal to build a bridge (which isn’t needed anyway) and begin construction the next day. You have to design the bridge, test out safety standards, study traffic implications and purchase all the materials before you even begin to think of construction. The architects take time to do their work. The draftsmen need time, the surveyors need time. But Obama has never been in the private sector so he does not know any of this stuff.
Only the sign makers are happy. They were shovel ready. They also get the benefit of the edict to replace those nasty all caps street signs.
In bho’s world, jobs are generated by unions who pay people to hold signs and demand that the rest of us do something for the protesters. Having a degree in radicalism doesn’t make him qualified to be a leader. It is time for the left to start eating their own and they can start with bho.
oh no u did-unt just call a Volt a ‘coal burner’…
Wow – sounds like a sentence from my 11 year old. Teleprompter issues?
Shovel Ready. Yeah, like this.
Rogue–I’ll let you have first shot this time…
Hey, Obama, I got a whole pile of “shovel ready” stuff for you out back. You’re welcome to all of it.
He could make a WPA project out of cleaning up all of the deadfall in Yellowstone from the fires 20 years ago.
When did Obama become the spokesperson for “the little blue pill”
Never wanting Obama to out do him, Joe Biden says that Democrats aren’t running on the administration’s accomplishments like health-care and financial-regulatory overhaul and the stimulus because “it’s just too hard to explain,”
You forgot the 2-10 years for environmental impact studies and lawsuits.
It would appear that Hope and Change now appears resembles a submarine plunging ever downward to its inevitable arrival at “crush depth.”
Wait for the implosion……
This childish mistake is just the first one that Obama will be forced to admit to.
At what point will the MSM pundits admit that PALIN would be a BETTER EXECUTIVE than Obama?
They’ve been hearing groans from the hull for weeks. On election day, rivets will fly off the bulkhead like gunfire.
And by the way . . .
. . . since there’s no such thing (all of a sudden) as “shovel-ready”, who were these governors who said there was? Let’s not forget the Democratic infrastructure at the state level that is also part of the problem.
If a state governor in the middle of an environmental disaster is not allowed by the EPA to pile up common sand to ward off hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil that are about to hit his state’s beaches, just how in the Sam Hill can anything be “shovel ready” to these people?
This is the same Zero Tolerance mentality that grips school administrators. The net effect is the same; mindless dedication to ludicrous, pointless, worthless, processes.
Re: the Chevy Volt. It will likely go the same way as the Yugo.
Of all the Paul Shanklin parodies played on Rush Limbaugh, “In a Yugo” has to be one of my all time favorites.
I really enjoyed some of the Yugo jokes that I learned about when they stopped manufacturing Yugos. My favorite: Why does a Yugo have a rear window defroster? Ans. So you can keep your hands warm while pushing the car.
That’s an easy one: NEVAH!
Not even when she shows them once she’s in office.
Never will they admit that. There are some things that the media will NEVER acknowledge, and ANYTHING good about Sarah or anyone Sarah is related to is top of the list.
Might as well ask them to admit that invading Iraq was a good idea.
Ya beat me to it Dexter.
Anyone here believe a single member of Obama’s cabinet or czar stable ever personally wielded a shovel? Not on yer life! They wouldn’t know what “shovel-ready” meant if the peon clearing snow off the White House walk dropped his shovel on their toes.
No, they would spend hours trying to figure out how to turn it on.
Truthfully, 2-10 years for all that would be a vast improvement. If America had to endure EIS & NIMBY suits in its formation, we’d all still be toting our water from wells, making trips to the little house out back, and Wells Fargo and Butterfield would still be the big names in modern transportation.
We are who we are, a pig is still a pig no matter how much lip stick you put on it.
Actually, its been SPEND and TAX dems. They love to spend the money first before they know how much to tax to cover their spending….as if they even care….they have absolutely no problems leaving IOUs to the next several generations. Not that some GOPers haven’t been as irresponible.
I’m ballot-ready. So long libs! You damn dirty communists!
I..er..um.. No pressure! (head explodes)

There really are some good “shovel ready” projects that can be done at low cost. And they will really help our economy and country.
***
Start digging on November 2, 2010. Dig lots of DimocRATS and RINO’s out of office and into Funemployment in January 2011. And then start shoveling Comrade Obama (PBUH) into early retirement in January 2013.
***
Then the President Palin Department of (not Social) Justice can start digging into ACORN, SEIU, the Black Panthers, etc. I think there are hundreds of good projects waiting for the first pick strikes in January 2013.
***
Michelle Malkin is hammering in the orange flagged survey stakes for these civic improvement tasks now. Bury these socialist / marxist / communist clowns in the elections.

Those teleprompter ears sure tell lots of lies.
Now bho thinks that when the GOP wins….well, he’ll make them work with him. Let’s see how well that works. He may have won, but he wasn’t voted dictator.
So,Bambi isn’t even waiting for the November Tsunami to strike the Democraps,he is making the Clenis U-turn already.By this time next year,he’ll be calling himself more fiscally Conservative than the tea Partiers, and the a$$hat voters will believe him.
