Baltimore Food Police Write First Ticket
**Written by Doug Powers

Conversation coming soon to a prison cell near you:
“What are you in for?”
“Grand theft auto. You?”
BALTIMORE — The Baltimore City Health Department issued its first environmental citation for repeat violations of the city’s trans fat ban.
The Health Department issued Healthy Choice, a food facility in the 400 block of Lexington Street, a $100 fine on Thursday.
“It was the second time they were found with a high trans fat level in their ingredients,” said Health Department agent Juan Gutierrez.
Officials said that during inspections in July and this month, the facility was found to be using a margarine product with trans fat levels in excess of what the law allows.
A source tells me the Health Department stormtroopers are referring to this particular type of crime as “a salt & fattery.”
Baltimore’s “Commissioner of Health” (you can’t make this stuff up), Dr. Oxiris Barbot (you certainly can’t make that up), is quoted as saying this (accent added by me for more appropriate Eastern Bloc effect): “Vile vee are pleased vis zee high rates of compliance veev seen since zee ban tuke effekt, vee vill continue to sankshun beeznesses zaht repeatedly fail to komply.”
Join me in standing up to these people and yelling at the top of our lungs, “From my cold, dead frying pan!”

I’m heading to the store today. I just wrote “butter” on my list. Lots of it. Screw the food police. Idiots.
I am surprised that they haven’t filed a lawsuit claiming that Healthy Choice is a misleading name for a company that has violated this law twice (gasp!)
How ironic that the first place cited is named Healthy Choice. Liberals really do eat their own. /snarc
If you want to screw the “food police” buing real butter is the worst thing you could do. Butter has a low amount of naturally occuring type of trans fat, conjugated linoleic acid, that actually has positive health benefits.
AAAUUUGGGHHH!
Hide the kids, hide the pets, hide the in-laws, it’s THE TRANSFAT MONSTER!!!
awesome.
I wouldn’t know–I never eat margarine.
I think there is a solution here! Move facility out of the United States…..more jobs gone….oh wait, that is part of the plan!!!
Baltimore used to be a relatively nice city. Now, they should cut off all food sources completely.
chap, and the article is talking about margarine, so I’m kind of confused…I agree with you about butter.
Also, don’t buy regular salt, it is molecularly rearranged. Use sea salt, but read the label to make sure it is natural processed sea salt.
Thank you Doctor Chapoutier. We’ve had this discussion before. Get back to me when you become a real doctor.
Stock up on Cool Whip. 90% of it’s calories are from fat. It may be 99%.
Typical left wing, Nazi, jack-booted, thug, bundists.
Why don’t they check the trans-fat content of all the food owned by each memeber of the state and local gov’ts? Start with the local “health departments.” That’d go over like a lead balloon.
So many city officials, so many cell phone cameras, someone will get a picture of the mayor or city councilidiot eating lobster with drawn butter. Or even worse a potato mashed, or baked with butter.
And the land of the free…
Hey buddy, wanna buy some butter? I have some here in the trunk of my car.
Will butter runners be the next wave of NASCAR drivers?
Please, somebody take this case all the way to the Supreme Court! It’s the only way to stop them.
Better to have $90,000 in your freezer than a stick of butter in your refrigerator.
Just saying…you are actually reinforcing their point rather than rebelling against it. And it doesn’t take a real doctor to google “butter trans fat.”
I say we switch over to lard. It makes for flakier biscuits and pie crusts.
Try to make a pie crust or any good pastry dough without butter, oh wait – that’s next – a Pastry Pogrom.

Good thing that all the more serious problems in Baltimore have been taken care of–like drugs, murder, robbery, failing schools, unemployment, government corruption, etc. And that the remaining serious problem–obesity–is being wiped out by the food police.
***
Long ago I asked a Boston subway employee why all the restrooms were closed. He said that the punks kept trashing them–and that it was too expensive to keep them open!

Otter: Point of parliamentary procedure!
Hoover: Don’t screw around, they’re serious this time!
Otter: Take it easy, I’m pre-law.
Boon: I thought you were pre-med.
Otter: What’s the difference?
I think we should all send the Baltimore City Health Department a nice gift, may I suggest “Deep Fried Twinkies”?
Or pad of butter
The left-wing “intelligencia” in this country remind me of the Grizzly Man. You know of whom I speak: the well-meaning fellow who minced around for few years in the wild with grizzly bears, lauding their intelligence and gentleness. He was the darling of the Birkenstock Left. He even had a documentary made about his exploits. Then he and his unfortunate girlfriend were mauled and eaten alive by the bears when he decided to visit them when many were starving and looking to build their winter fat stores.
The Left are figuratively wrapping themselves in the mantle of a socioeconomic Grizzly Man. They are about to be eaten alive but it seems they are completely oblivious.
If he were alive today, old Joe Kennedy would be all over this. I can see Camelot from here.
From my cold, dead cast iron skillet!!!
They’re just trying to butter you up, Chap.
Kids in Baltimore live in squalor. Apartment buildings are rat traps.
However, the Health Department uses its resources to check for trans fats.
COSMIC!!
Rogue, tread easy today my man, tread easy……..
What gets me is that ONE person can object to something and everyone else has to give up their rights. I have never figured out why some other ONE person didn’t say “NO” to the other ONE person.
Land of the free? Nope – we have food police
Home of the brave? Nope – the TSA still exists
May as well move to China – at least their economy is working.
Hey Baltimore City Health Department, take a looky-loo at these trans fats! (bends over and drops trou)
“Must be jello cuz puddin don’t shake like that!”
The place in Tulsa that had the best french fries was called “Wings.” They fried them in lard just like in the old days right up until the old lady who owned it finally sold the place. Their hamburgers were almost thin enough to read the newspaper through, but they covered a 6 inch bun.
My favorite was the combo meal: a 32 ounce fountain drink, cheeseburger with onions fried in drenched in mayonnaise, and french fries.
The food police won’t take me alive!
ECS
And 30% of Baltimore high schoolers are obese and another 25-30% are overwight. How is that not just as serious a problem as rodents?
I mean, go ahead and think that an outright ban on trans fat is not the answer. But we can’t pretend that they are not a serious health issue.
This has nothing to do with “Health” and everything to do with CONTROL.
People, the real concern isn’t butter versus margarine, it’s Who gets to dictate What you eat, do, believe, and How you live your own life. We have to stop the Bloombergs, the “know-more-than-you”, and “Do-Gooder-Numb-Nuts”! Enough!
Nothing that a little personal responsibility wouldn’t cure! Seriously, when are we going to get it??? The government can’t MAKE us do these things!! We need to take care of ourselves. Big Brother better get out of our faces soon or there will be war, I guarantee it. Americans do not take kindly to losing our liberty. Last time we got really really mad…well, you know what happened. And guess what…we won!!
Say what? Salt is sodium chloride, it’s an ionic compound. Sea salt just has other minerals left in it, rock salt is just ancient sea salt deposits left by natural concentration.
First it was “butter is bad for you”, then it was “oops, butter isn’t so bad, avoid margarine.” The nannys haven’t figured out that medical studies are usually wrong, or maybe they don’t care, but we should call them to account. If they demand perfection, then we should demand it of them, or else. Get it right the first time, every time, or do time.
Don’t suppose any of you have ever read “The Jungle” have you?
I think it’s rather ironic that the people who claim to know what’s best for us, have to continually lie to get their way.
A quick look at those who are registered Democrats, especially female Democrats, one will find a disproportionately high rate of obesity. Dare I say that a majority of these are on public assistance, and get food stamps as well?
My point? Doctor, heal thyself! Dem’s should apply their rules on their own people before thrusting their nonsense on actual taxpayers.
Chap, Are you saying if we the tax paying citizens are buying their food (food stamps), paying part of their housing costs (section 8), financially supporting them (welfare checks), that we get to tell them how much they can weigh?
The liberals of Baltimore deserve each other the the laws that they wish for. Let em cross over to Virginia for the good fried chicken.
Chapoutier, we need to ban reproduction for liberals…not trans fat. Obesity is a psychological problem…not a trans fat issue. I’ve never known a self-respecting obese person.
Liberals think that government control is the answer to every problem in our society. Conservatives think that self control is the answer. There are hundreds of other countries in the world where liberals can practice their ideology. America is one of a handful where we still enjoy freedom.
If anyone wants to see the results of “liberal utopia”, just look at Venezuela. That’s America of the future if we don’t stop the progressives.
This issue becomes moot when people are made responsible for their own health and welfare. Government feels the right to step in because they have a financial stake due to Medicare/Medicaid payments. This is why government deliberately creates dependency, because more citizen dependency leads to more government control. It’s a devilishly clever plan that has worked for the statists.
War on Food
War on Soda
War on Drugs
War on Tobacco
I always thought I owned me. And I was in
charge of what I put in my body. How silly I was!Land of the Free? Really?
I dont recall saying anything about public assistance. It seems some other people around here are making the jump from “fat” to “on welfare” but I never did.
Chap:
Do you know a lawyer in your area by the name of Mike Cox? He’s an old friend. You might know him since he lives and practices in Rockville.
The prescription for this is – kids, get off your dead ass and go do something outside rather than playing video games and watching MTV or Americas next whatever. The second prescription is, PE in school.
I wouldn’t say they are wrong. The old joke among researchers is–there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
Statistics are often misleading.
I don’t need elitist liberals saying what is healthy for me. They have an agenda.
In the past, health ‘authorities’ have proclaimed all alcohol consumption to be bad for one’s health. Then, as time passed and more studies were undertaken, new health ‘authorities’ restated their position and gave the opinion that low intake of alcohol was actually beneficial to one’s health.
Anyone see a possible liability issue arising down the road as governments attempt to control diets by issuing penalities for foods presently deemed unhealthy? What happens when alternate research later reveals that what the food police claimed was unhealthy at one point in time is proven to not be so bad for us? Would those that were fined and punished for serving food previously thought to be unhealthy have a claim?
and can be created in the lab. No thanks–I’d rather have the NaCl created by G-d with a side order of heavy metals LOL
As a vegetarian, I want to eliminate meat in Baltimore. Would that be fine with you chap?
Great!
Now I can expect them to shut down the Indian Restuarants I enjoy on Charles Street near the Washington Monument, and other eateries in which I might enjoy dining while we, as a family, visit Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
Mister P,
I have been thinking the following in regard to the food police who tell people that they cannot drink soda, eat at McDonald’s, etc., the food police who have their nose up the rectums of restaurants, cafeteries, grocery stores, food processing and packaging plants, people’s homes, etc.
I have followed a vegetarian diet for 40 years. Will the food police get around to mandating that I must eat certain foods I choose NOT to eart?
Will the food police mandate that I must stop eating certain foods I enjoy eating?
i don’t trust these people.
When are we, collectively, as a populace, going to rise up and fight back?
Of course there are other citizens who are sheeplne and who condone government overbearance as this.
What will it take before this is stopped?
Nope, but not even close to being in the same boat.
Can you imagine how the chefs of most high end restaurants are having a total meld down trying to figure out how to fix food with the ‘food police’ watching their every move? You can’t make good food without putting things in it that might be on the ban list!
L
Just about everyone here has got this all wrong. The ban on excessive amounts of trans fats is not about people getting fat.
Regulating the amount of trans fats that are allowed in processed foods is exactly the same kind of thing as regulating the amount of rat droppings that are allowed in processed foods.
Me too, since 1970. I became a vegetarian the day after I graduated and three weeks before I was drafted into the Army.
Certainly meat contains trans fat. But then where would Obama get his cheese burgers?
I definitely don’t trust them. One reason I love this country so much has been its tolerance. Nobody questioned my becoming a vegetarian. Nobody stopped me from reading books on Eastern philosophy and choosing my own path in life.
I know people from the Eastern Bloc who had to keep all their searching secret lest there Communist neighbors would turn them in. I happen to know some right now in China. Tyranny starts with the busy bodies telling us how to live our lives. Politicians are only too willing to enforce such laws (as long as it never applies to them).
Too bad, since it has all that fat, it must be eliminated.
“Will the food police get around to mandating that I must eat certain foods I choose NOT to eat?”
Yes. Yous see it is no longer a health issue. Rather, not eating certain foods is an economic decision that affects interstate commerce. You have an obligation to buy certain agricultural products and if you don’t you will pay a fine. Or maybe a tax, depending on the particulars of the warped logic.
Healthy Choice should say, “Eff you, Bal’mer” and move to the suburbs. Or to Texas.
Do that in Ebonics or Spanish and left-wing blogs will light up with racism charges, which are always baseless anyway.
Oh ya Chap, a Big Mac is pretty much is equivalent to this:
While you’re at it, please scold me for not wanting fill my house with Mercury and buy a car 3 times more environmentally damaging than a Hummer so we can all “Save the Freakin Planet.”
The Left’s understanding of Science is near Stone Age.
To that point, this is also not a ban. The regulation only covers margarine, shortening and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. And even then there can be up to .5 grams per serving.
How many children do you know that have died from the Plague lately? How many do you know that have serious weight related health issues?
Do that in Ebonics or Spanish and left-wing blogs will light up with racism charges, which are always baseless anyway.
Correct.
I remember a medical staff meeting ~20 years ago, when the medical staff actually held a vote on whether to support a mandatory seat-belt law for adults; one of the arguments that the socialist/statist docs who were pushing for a yes vote gave was that, since auto accident victims aren’t turned away, and that (?)some money(?) was provided to hospitals (?)by the state(?), that the state had an interest in compelling adults to wear seat belts.
A clear example of the irreconcilable difference in worldviews that is at the root of most, if not virtually all, of the social discord our wonderful country is threatened by.
Hmmm…send the food police in Baltimore foods high in transfats as a protest: margarine, Bisquick, large orders of french fries, KFC Original Recipe chicken dinner, Mrs. Smith’s Apple Pie, donuts, packaged cookies (Oreo Double Stuff anyone? — tempt ‘em), potato chips, snickers and other chocolate candy bars, nondairy creamers, whipped toppings, bean dips, gravy mixes, salad dressings, et al.
Then they can’t donate it anywhere because they would be violating their own law and would be portrayed as hypocrites. And they can’t keep it because they would be portrayed as hypocrites.
Due to the stupidity of that law and the department created, it’s a lose-lose situation for them.

We’ve come a long way from selling oleo-margarine stamps in the 40′s to this.
I only use real butter (from my own fresh goat’s milk), so this isn’t an issue for me. But it’s like someone said about the Nazis (paraphrasing), first they came for transfats and I said nothing . . . .
Isn’t this friggin’ America?!
Shouldn’t I be able to open “Trans Fats R Us” and serve deep fried sticks of oleo if I thought there was a market?!
Aaaaaaargh!!!
But you can’t because that would be bad for people, just like they don’t allow selling cigarrettes…er..um.. nevermind.
How many children do you know that have died from the Plague lately? The Plague of drugs?
How many do you know that have serious weight related health issues? Not that many but I do know a lot of kids now days feel really good about themselves and cannot state what nation New Mexicos Southern border is on.
Absolutely. If people really know what they are getting, then you should be able to go for it.
However, we went through a thirty to forty year ‘experiment’ with processed foods wherein we learned that consumers don’t actually buy their packaged food in that ideal libertarian world way. They look at the headline and buy their “Corn Flakes” even when if they did the research and studied the company and so on, they would have been able to figure out there wasn’t a whole lot of corn in those flakes.
The normal libertarian process of people learning to avoid the ‘bad’ foods just wasn’t happening. It was unprosecuteable fraud on a massive scale.
Now we have food labeling laws, and we have many other laws regarding food safety, like regulating how much rat droppings is allowed.
That was the good face of liberalism, before it won all of its struggles and then went all leftwing nutsoid bonkers off the rails trying to find more dragons to slay.
Regulating trans fats is a good thing. This is not the problem. It’s when the regulators go after perfectly healthy Big Macs and Snickers candy bars (when consumed in moderation) because they are ‘fattening’ that they are way out of line.
I’ve never had a Baltimore high schooler up in my mango tree at night eating the fruit.
Ever kid I found in my avocado tree.
Probably because they are too fat to climb it.
spaceycakes on Rogue’s jelly
Probably one reason kids are fat these days is they don’t climb enough trees. (Or run and jump and swim and tip cows.) In urban areas, few opportunities, and in the burbs, neurotic mothers. So they sit inside and expand.
I’d run for POTUS with the intent of one-term only with the following as my platform:
Repeal bans on freon, incadescent lights, & low flow toilets.
Bring back real butter for popcorn in movie theaters.
Get restaurants to cook french fries in beef tallow like in the old days.
And once I get all that done…
I’d resign.
Well… Richard the Lionheart was shot with a Crossbow bolt, soon after commenting on a French Crossbowman who was standing on a wall, crossbow in one hand, and frying pan in the other (he was using it as a shield)…
History… repeating…
More like neurotic, overbearing, controlling government.
Playing is ‘dangerous,’ especially the way boys age 5 to 15 do it. Boys are wired to play hard and ‘dangerous’ as preparation for becoming warriors.
We are becoming a nation of girls and girlymen. Mostly fat. If the Muslims do not quickly overrun us, it just shows how incredibly inferior their system really is.
I think it’s time for Arlo Guthrie to rewrite the lyrics for Alice’s Restaurant. First of all, you can no longer get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant. And second of all, this conversation has to replace the jailhouse conversation mentioned in the song.
That’s about the only thing they haven’t figured out how to fry down here. Ever heard of fried beer?
Since antibiotics exists no one has to die of the plague. So what aobut contracting the plague or suffering from any of other 69 rat borne diseases you simply ignored?
Chap, if you think that Health Departments have time to police trans fats, look no farther at the extent of bed bug infestations occuring in the Eastern U.S. in the year 2010.
It is the 21st century and for the first time since I was a child (more than a FEW years ago) we have bed bugs. That is just one of many indicators that their priorities are whacked.
No one on the Left gives a rat’s rear (since you want to disccuss rats) if Little Johnnie is fat. They DO CARE that they get to CONTROL everything that Little Johnnie and his family, eat, wear, drive, live in, etc. etc. etc.
Trans fats are an excuse; nothing more.
One more point. My elederly mother’s odds of surviving a diet of trans fats is better than her odds of surviving an Obamacare Death Panel.
“….it takes a long time to do the necessary administrative steps that have to be taken to put the legislation together to control the people.” – Rep. John Dingle (D)
So why did you lead with that example?
No one is saying they can’t. But it is stupid to arbitrarily choose one health problem and say you can’t focus on another until that one has been effectively eradicated. Especialy when eradication is for all intents and purposes, impossible.
Hey, food police…. I’m having salt and vinegar potato chips in your honor.
With all the real crime in Maryland, issuing fines for food violations is a huge waste of time and money.
Nope, they can contract yeast and fungal infections as a result of antibiotic over use.
I didn’t. I used it as a singular example. The issue is where is a Health Services Department going to use their limited resources. Trans Fats do not even make my Top 50.
It’s the Emotionally Driven Prioritized World of the Loonie Left that is not based on risk, sciecne or anything else OTHER THAN POLITICAL CONTROL. I note that you still fail to refute that premise.
Here in Flyover Country our illustious Progressive Governor has decried the state of bridges in our state. We are all about to plunge into the abyss everytime we cross one to hear him rant. Our roads are crumbling under out tires…..
So he just announced a grant for $530 million dollars to spend on?…….. WAIT FOR IT…..passenger train service between Iowa City (pop 60,000) and Chicago. Forget the fact their is an existing Amtrak line 40 miles south of Iowa City that no one rides and is still subsidized.
Do the ROI on that expenditure. I can walk to Mars before that ever breaks even or turns a penny of profit to repay the $530 million. That’s how you pile up a $5 trillion deficit in 4 years, that mindset.
Because your contention that this regulation is not based on science or anything else OTHER THAN POLITICAL CONTROL is paranoid, unsubstantiated tripe.
Trans fats are a part of a larger problem with heart disease. (Note: references to actual SCIENCE from peer reviewed studies to follow.) The New England Journal of Medicine found that about 30,000 deaths per year in the US was directly attributable to trans fat consumption.
Name me 50 other things that kill 30,000 people a year. Do your rats?
Leading Causes of Death
(Data are for the U.S.)
Number of deaths for leading causes of death
* Heart disease: 616,067
* Cancer: 562,875
* Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 135,952
* Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 127,924
* Accidents (unintentional injuries): 123,706
* Alzheimer’s disease: 74,632
* Diabetes: 71,382
* Influenza and Pneumonia: 52,717
* Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 46,448
* Septicemia: 34,828
I suppose the City of Baltimore will now mandate all residents wrap themselves in bubble wrap or large, fluffy pillows before they leave their homes…
Outlawing cigarettes would make a big cut in heart disease, cancer and stroke so why doesn’t the all-knowing nanny state do that? Then we can talk about trans fat…
Um, they HAVE outlawed cigarettes in public places, genius.
Similarly, this ban applies only to restaurants. Not your home. Trans fat away there.
No, they haven’t, чайников.
Yes, they have.
It’s not even fun when it is this easy to prove you wrong.
chap refuses to see the direction the government is going and that the CPUSA is using the Democratic Party to accomplish its desire, to control the masses.
You really don’t understand much about law or the English language. But that is never in doubt when you continuously make such idiotic statements.
Chappy’s motto: Cogito cogito ergo cogito sum.
Well, I know that “they” is a pronoun, usually referring to one previously mentioned, which in this case would be your “all-knowing nanny state.” The law I was referring to was in fact passed by a state, though I leave it to others to speculate on the “all knowing” or “nanny” descriptors.
And lets see…”have” in this context is a helper verb indicating past tense. The law I am referring to passed in 2006, which I believe is in the past.
“outlawed” is a verb meaning to make illegal or ban, and the law I am referring to did ban and make illegal.
“cigarettes” are those tiny sticks that you light up and smoke. And I know that the law I am referring to made specific mention of them.
“in” is a preposition meaning “inclusion within something” and I know that the law dealty with being inside certain areas.
“public places” is a noun meaning “areas generally open and available to all.” And I know the bill deals with restaurants, hospitals, shops…all of which are specifically covered by the law I am referrign to.
Sorry if that was too complex for you to follow, but I am quite certain I am on firm ground, both legally and etymologically.
Ugh. I quit using that crap years ago. We use real butter, it cooks better, it bakes better, it definitely TASTES better, and at least it’s a natural product instead of FrankenFat.
Just keep digging deeper and deeper, Chappy, old boy. I am quite certain you are educated well beyond what little intelligence you ever possessed.
And if you persist on maintaining that cigarettes have been outlawed in public places, by all means, keep stating so. The more emphatically, the better.
