The wall-to-wall campaign coverage has distracted me from noting several terrifying shootings in the Beltway area — all targeting the military and specifically, the Marines. The shooter is apparently on the loose with a high-powered rifle.
Earlier in the week, there were three incidents:
he FBI said on Thursday that it has linked a shooting at a Marine Corps recruiting station in a Virginia suburb outside the U.S. capital to two other shootings at the Pentagon and a Marine Corps museum.
“A shooting at a military-related facility in Chantilly, Va., has been linked to two earlier shootings at similar facilities, laboratory tests show,” the FBI said in a statement, adding that it would not release more details.
Investigators believe a high-powered rifle was used to fire up to seven shots at the Pentagon, shattering two windows, on October 19. The FBI said it had linked that shooting to another two days earlier at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, in Triangle, Virginia, 36 miles south of Washington.
No one was injured in the shootings and the FBI said they “all involved shots fired into vacant parts of the buildings.”
The FBI said it was investigating, along with local authorities, and asked for help from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity at the three sites.
Last night, the Marine Corp musem was targeted again:
Authorities are investigating shots that were were fired overnight at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Prince William County.
This is the second time the facility has been targeted this month.
The building was closed when an unknown number of shots were fired, according to Prince William County Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Chinn, and nobody was injured.
Investigators were still on the scene Friday morning, according to Officer Jonathan Perok, a county police spokesman.
The new investigation comes a day after authorities, citing ballistics testing, announced that that the same gun was used to fire shots at the museum Oct. 17, the Pentagon on Oct. 19 and a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly this week.
The Marine Corps Marathon is being held this weekend in D.C. Security has been stepped up.
This is all chillingly reminiscent of the jihadi sniper attacks in the D.C/Md./Va. area seven years ago. Those of us who lived through it won’t soon forget — and I pray that law enforcement officials have learned from the political correctness-addled incompetence that marked that botched investigation.
