AARP to Employees: Your Insurance Costs are Going Up Thanks to the Great Affordable Health Care Plan We Promoted

By Doug Powers  •  November 5, 2010 11:04 AM

Nancy Pelosi said it: “We need to pass health care reform so we can find out what’s in it.” Some people were actually excited by that prospect, like contestants on Let’s Make a Deal being asked to trade the pittance in their hand for the promise of what’s behind door #1:

null

AARP, either in blind faith or full complicity, bet on door #1 and their employees (not to mention almost everybody else) get to pay the price:

WASHINGTON – AARP’s endorsement helped secure passage of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. Now the seniors’ lobby is telling its employees their insurance costs will rise partly as a result of the law.

In an e-mail to employees, AARP says health care premiums will increase by 8 percent to 13 percent next year because of rapidly rising medical costs.

And AARP adds that it’s changing copayments and deductibles to avoid a 40 percent tax on high-cost health plans that takes effect in 2018 under the law. Aerospace giant Boeing also has cited the tax in asking its workers to pay more. Shifting costs to employees lowers the value of a health care plan and acts like an escape hatch from the tax.

Prepare for AARP to now lobby the Obama administration for a waiver from the glorious health care law they helped shove down America’s throat.

Here’s a related flashback. In August of last year an AARP representative was in Dallas trying to convince dues-paying members why they should support the Democrats’ health care plan. It didn’t go well, and the skeptics were correct:

The woman conducting the seminar will now be paying more for health insurance, so there’s a bit of schadenfreude here — self-inflicted in her case.

AARP employees need to prepare for their bosses to tell them that this was all part of the plan. Of course they didn’t know that until it was passed, but the spin will be that “we’re going to have to pay a little more but it will be to help everybody else out there.”

In the mean time, everybody else out there is paying more, too. So, who exactly was this supposed to help? Obama? Congress? Big Labor? All of the above? Clearly not us.

Fancy that. The truth is that there was never a comprehensive problem identification analysis done with healthcare. How can you fix problems if you don’t even know what they are? It follows that this legislation was never about lowering healthcare costs and issues of access, but rather government control over an essential industry. The law was in the can decades ago and on the Dem pantry shelf ready to trot out when they assumed total control of the government. That is why we never had a debate. There was nothing to debate, it was a done deal.

After 2 years starting out as a $78 per month Private draftee. “Hey, Sarge–if I sign this paper it would prove that I’m too stupid to help out here! Why would I do so? I made $400 a month washing dishes before I got my engineering degree.”

This is wrong. Employers shouldn’t be able to pass on the increased cost of health insurance to the poor employees. We need to pass a law forbiding employers to pass on the costs of health care increases to their employees. Also a law that prohibits any companies passing on tax hikes to their employees. The evil corporation has to pay for that.

Go out of business you say. Lets pass a law that no corporation can go out of business either and that everyone must buy from American companies and we will blah blah blah blah blah and we need to put politics aside and do whats right for the people (unless my party is in charge) and yada yada yada….

Once you read whats in it, you will like it. ;)
