Happy Birthday Marine Corps!

Today marks the 235th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

From Marines.com:

During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.

A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.

The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines.

As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern’s owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became his first captain and recruiter. They began gathering support and were ready for action by early 1776.

Each year, the Marine Corps marks November 10th with a celebration of the brave spirit which compelled these men and thousands since to defend our country as United States Marines.

On this 235th birthday of the Marines, as the cake tradition endures, we’re also bringing our Project Valour-IT fundraiser into the home stretch. As many of you know from previous posts, we’re again taking part on Team Marine for this year’s fundraiser. As evidenced by the totals below, so many of you have already responded generously.

The fundraiser ends tomorrow, Veterans Day, but it’s a great cause that needs our support year around.

Click here to learn more or below to donate. If you’ve already donated, thanks so much!

Happy birthday, Marine Corps! Thanks to all those who serve, who have served, and to their families.

I once had a cartoon book, drawn and written by a Vietnam Marine. In it, he depicts a couple of Marines in a bar. One of them is saying, “Did you know the Marines were started in a bar? Which makes sense, someone would have to be drunk to say ‘Let’s start a Marine Corps’.”

    Anyway, Happy Birthday, Marines!!

Thanks! I only served in peace-time, 1982-1990. Had I known Saddam was going to invade Kuwait when I was getting out, I would have stayed in and continued to this day. One of my few regrets in life.

Having said that, the Marines are the world’s finest fighting force. No better friend. No greater enemy.

I spent time as an Aviation Ordnanceman, putting bombs, missiles, etc., on the F-4 Phantom. It was a real “blast”!

It was my pleasure to serve. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

A Navy Chaplain who loved serving with the Marines had a stamp on his desk. It said “TUN” for Tun Tavern in Philly, the birthplace of the Marines.

He would stamp any Marine’s head — just so it could read “NUT”!

Gotta love those Marines, their Navy Chaplains, and a good sense of humor.

On the same note: tomorrow-November 11- is Veterans Day. Let’s not forget to put out the flags. Pull it out tonight and put it by the coffeemaker.

Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was the day the WW 1 vets sold poppies. As those grand old men faded away the WW ll vets took up the call but we are losing them too. If you see one selling poppies buy a bunch–you’ll make that grand old man’s day.

Did you ever wonder why the Marine Corps Hymn starts with the words:

    From the Halls of Montezuma
    To the shores of Tripoli

The “shores of Tripoli” refers to our military’s first battles against Muslim terrorists.

The Barbary Powers conflict began during the American Revolution when Muslim terrorists from four different Islamic nations (Tunis, Morocco, Algiers, and Tripoli) began making indiscriminate attacks against the property and interests of what they claimed to be “Christian” nations (America, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, etc.).

The Barbary Powers (called Barbary “pirates” by most Americans) attacked American civilian and commercial merchant ships (but not military ships) wherever they found them. Prior to the Revolution, American shipping had been protected by the British navy, and during the Revolution by the French navy. After the Revolution, however, America lacked a navy of her own and was therefore left without protection for her shipping. The vulnerable American merchant ships, built for carrying cargoes rather than fighting, were therefore easy prey for the warships of the Barbary Powers, which seized the cargo of the ships as loot and took their seamen (of whom all were considered Christians by the attacking Muslims) and enslaved them. [17]

In 1784, Congress authorized American diplomats John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate with the Muslim terrorists. [18] Negotiations proceeded, and in 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson candidly asked the Ambassador from Tripoli the motivation behind their unprovoked attacks against Americans. What was the response?

The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of their Prophet [Mohammed] – that it was written in their Koran that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners; that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners; and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise. [19]
