Undrained Swamp Things Give Charles Rangel Ovation After Post-Censure Speech

By Doug Powers  •  December 2, 2010 10:31 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

The House voted 333-79 to make Charles Rangel the first Representative in 27 years to be censured. In congressional terms, a censure is just one notch below expulsion and a half-notch above having to write “I will not be corrupt and I will pay all the taxes I owe” 500 times on the cloak room chalkboard.

Following the vote, Nancy Pelosi read the censure resolution like a Monty Python Spanish Inquisition sentencing Rangel to being poked with the soft cushions.

Rangel then gave what will go down in history as the “old, tax evading congressmen never die, they just refuse to be shamed away” speech. Those words fell on deaf ears for those of us who would be sent to a rent-controlled jail cell if we were guilty of the same “oversights.”

Watch until the end, because the pathetic round of applause Rangel received from many Democrats is proof-positive that the swamp is far from drained — something very unbecoming the “most ethical Congress ever”:

Pelosi appeared none too thrilled to be pulling the plug from the the bottom of this particular swamp. Actually, because Rangel gets to keep his seat, this wasn’t as much “draining the swamp” as it was just throwing a capful of watered-down chlorine into the muck.

To his credit, Rangel did apologize… for the fact that there are idiots who can’t understand why he shouldn’t be held to the same legal standards as everybody else.

Update: At a post-censure press conference, Rangel was asked about the charges average Americans would have faced for doing the same thing(s) he did. Rangel’s response? “I don’t deal in average American citizens.”

As head of the ways and means committee, had a Republican president done what HE had, he would have called for his impeachment. There can be no doubt about it; however, he stands there proudly, and says that his “oversights” did not meet the standards of merely being censured. If they didn’t (based upon those who had been), then there obviously should be more congressmen EXPELLED for their “oversight” than being censured.

His self-centered, spoiled rotten speech proves beyond a doubt that he considers any actions that he takes as his entitlement, both as a “suppressed minority,” and as an elected elite. He will never be truly sorry for any of his crimes–that is until he faces Christ in the hereafter, and then he’ll REALLY be sorry…

But, really, what is censure but a little public shaming that the majority of the people watching don’t agree with. From Politics Daily:

Perhaps the most heartfelt and surprising support for Rangel came from Rep. Peter King, the New York Republican who has often sparred with Rangel on partisan issues. “I have never heard anyone question Charlie Rangel’s integrity, nor have I ever seen Charlie Rangel treat anyone with disrespect,” he said. “I am imploring you today to pause for a moment and step back, to reflect not just on the life of Charlie Rangel, but more importantly the 220 years of tradition and precedent in this House.”

Peter King has clearly been living on planet Congress. Rangel has never been on my radar screen, but I’ve seen him showing disrespect quite often. He relished the thought of pushing Dick Cheney out of an office in 2006. Rangel called Cheney “a mean old man and I don’t pay too much attention to him …What does he know? You have never read anything where he has been involved in improving the economy of this country, whether were talking about jobs, taxes, revenue, training. If you were to ask somebody ‘what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when it comes to the vice president?’ And it would be anger, war and going hunting with your friends.”

For the record, Nancy Pelosi is still the Speaker of the House.

For the record, more Democrats (170) than Republicans (163) voted to censure Rangel.
