Uplifting video of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 3, 2010 11:31 AM

As the wife of a long-distance runner, I’ve seen my fair share of amazing stories and races.

This one about California high school runner Holland Reynolds, who collapsed at her state cross-country meet just two yards from the finish line and crawled to the end to clinch a team championship, has to rank near the top of the list. Reynolds was inspired by her coach, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Hat tip and video thanks to Jim Hoft:

Having participated in many races, both cross country and on the track, I’ve seen many more dramatic finishes than this by a runner who was barely able to make it across the finish line.

Kudos to her completing the race. Once you make a habit of not finishing, it can have a huge negative impact going forward, not only in competition, but in every day life.

Now here is a truly amazing and dramatic finish to a race, the 800m final at the USA 2008 Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWxiN2Hl61k

    Thanks. For both videos.

Reminds me of in Basic Training. During our final Physical Fitness test before graduation one of the guys broke his ankle when he stumbled on a rock. He was on his last lap and in great shape time wise. He got up and hop/limped the last half of the lap to finish in time.

When asked why he did it he said that he asked himself what would he do if this happened in combat and knew that he would have to keep going. BTW this was at Fort Benning, GA (home of the infantry school)in May of 1992 for a bunch of 11B grunts.

Holland Reynolds has enough heart and guts for TWO competitors.

TooMuchTime, those opposing players had enough respect for a worthy opponent for two teams.

I confess to being more concerned than inspired. I certainly would be very worried if I were her father and I hope she gets a thorough medical examination before continuing in these running events. I also am aware there are some parents, very few no doubt, who would urge her in the strongest terms to continue regardless of what the doctor advised.

Dexter Alarius, no, I believe it’s from a college game in Oregon.

Exactly. They knew she hit the homerun and deserved it. Doing anything less than what they did would have been the easy thing, not the right thing. Don’t forget, they lost game because of what they did.
