Lame-duck watch: Senate approves tax deal, 81-19; Roll call vote added
The Senate just finished voting on the Obama/GOP tax deal. It passed as expected.
The vote was 81-19.
Temporary tax relief, permanent entitlements.
On to the House.
Flashback:
12/6: Deal with the devil: Temporary across-the-board tax relief for more endless jobless benefits
11/5: Voters speak – No to soak-the-rich schemes
Republicans must stop allowing the White House to demonize America’s entrepreneurs and producers. By continuing to refer to them as beneficiaries of the “Bush tax cuts” instead of as the besieged victims of Obama tax increases, the GOP cedes the moral high ground. It’s time to make the White House own its noxious war on wealth.

Doesn’t the unemployement extension end after 2011 though? I’m not sure anything besides the pork in the bill is permanent.
I am sooooooo sick of our govt…..
I just hope the house makes changes to the bill so it will have to go back to the senate. Keep up the back and forth till the new dc bunch gets in. Stop ALL bills! Gads, I can not begin to tell you how I detest this lame duck crud!
L
I am at a total loss as to why any Republican senator – even a RINO – would vote for this bill in the lame duck session. Well, I suppose that will just add some more names to the Tea Party hit list of Republicans that need to go home for good.
It should be illegal – and it certainly is immoral – that the lowest-rated/most-hated congress in history is voting on any bills at all before the new session begins.
If the Dems are so opposed to “cutting taxes for the rich” why did only 19 senators vote against it?
Who were the 19 that voted against it?
3rd2nd party baby!Nothing like a massive spending bill with lots of pork to continue the status quo. The You A$$ government strikes again.
For someone who dispises the wealthy Barack Obama sure enjoys what that wealth brings: caviar, Kobe and Wagyu beef, copious amounts of Grey Goose vodka, Marlboros. … Ironic that the only way for this small man to enjoy that fruit is to steal it from others. He has truly risen to the top of his food chain.
Don’t kid yourself. The unemployment extension will be scheduled to run out at the end of next year….until they vote to extend it again because no one wants to be seen as a grinch at Christmas time.
The Republicans will never learn that each time you compromise your principles it will become easier and easier until it does not matter anymore. It seems now that there is no hope for many of the R’s currently in Congress. The only way to fix the problem is to replace any and all Congress critters who have compromised their Conservitives values.
At which time they’ll load up a bill with more pork in the guise of not being “Grinchy.”
Thank goodness, Obama almost had to delay his Hawaiian vacation.
Meet the new GOP, same as the old GOP….
GOP-RIP
Anybody remember what sings the song?
We were $14 trillion in debt, now these criminals shove it in our faces by adding on another trillion? Please sirs, please rub some more salt in my cuts. I am just not believing this.
I really would like to see the voting record on this. By the way, we are broke, how do they justify spending more? Oh, I forgot, Treasury has those newfangled turbocharged digiluxe warpdrive printing presses. I was worried there for a minute – thought we ran out of money. Like my old sister-in-law once said “I can’t be out of money, I still have blank checks at home.”
AlohaGuy#12,
I read a few days ago that bho wasn’t leaving for vacation till the start treaty was passed. This might have changed.

Yeah, ain’t it amazing to see all these rich people bashing the rich?
Pelosi, Feinstein, obama…. etc.
I’ve heard that the White House nickname for michelle obama is “Lobster Woman” because she eats so much of it that there is danger of an extinction event for the species based on her consumption.
The problem is that too many among us see something shiny and lose our focus. McCain should have been ridden out on a rail but “conservative” Republicans got hung up on Hayworth being “flawed”. McCain, of course, is not flawed (????).
That is why we can’t get these guys out. We would vote against your RINO but can’t focus on getting voting against the one on our ballot. It’s so simple. See RINO on ballot? Move on to another choice. Too many of us simply can’t do that. It’s hopeless.
Y’all know I have a somewhat low opinion of our president, but politically speaking, this is his finest hour. He gets to act like a grownup by saying he had to compromise to get popular tax cuts extended to regular Americans, while getting a winning argument to get reelected. No matter how crappy the economy is then, if it’s between him and a tough talking Republican who says we need to give more money to rich people, he’s looking pretty good.
Cornyn and Hutchison voted yes. Their local lines in Houston are either not being answered or are melting down.
Hutchison is a no (so far, so her DC staff says) on the omnibus spending bill, can’t get through Cornyn’s DC office.
I have no representive to call in the house. The old saying elections have consequences is ringing true much too harshly. The repubs better have a plan to unwind this mess or we better pull together a third party pronto!
Yeah RSS, let’s not just tax the rich, lets behead them as they did in the French Revolution. Those filthy bastard rich should all be taken out and killed. No more Apple, No more hollywood, no more greedy jewish bankers, no more greedy sports owners or stars. Just we real people all working for the gubmint writing regulations to punish the other branch of gubmint. Oh yeah, and kill those damn lawyers twice.
We are such fools to believe that a politician will vote for what is best for our Country.
Lawyer Control, that’s what we need….
Tax relief? Where?!!
The lame-duck Dems are now touting themselves as being Fiscal Hawks, and being so very concerned (sniff, sob) about the deficit, and funding SSI. What gall! They really do think we are stupid.
Can we expect any conservative member of Congress to call them on this? “You are a Liar, Senator!” No! Decorum is more important than the truth.
We know by now, that everytime a Democrat makes a statement of position, or intent, the exact opposite is the truth.
I’m don’t feel like having compassion and forgiveness for the plague called the Democrat Party this Christmas. I can only hope that Santa brings these pathological liars a fair share of the misery they are trying to foist on us. “Ho, ho, ho, mutha _____s!”
Had Hayworth been in from the beginning, he may well have won.
right_on #25 – YOUR post is exactly what I’m thinking…especially the very last line! Thanks.
Cornyn and Hutchison, those are Texans aren’t they? Not Californians? Just making sure. Frankly, what with Bushes, Roves, Hutchison, Cornyn (and that is just on the GOP side), Texas is looking more and more like CA every day.
Sessions, DeMint, Coburn, and Ensign. No others stood with these guys? Republicans are like the indians who sold Manhattan for a mirror and some beads….
Completely agree. This is why now is the time to start fielding true Conservative candidates to run in 2012. If we (conservatives) wait until “election season” we will have our candidates chosen for us by the establishment. A prime example of this is already goind on in where the GOP in SC is planning on having a GOP Presedential debate in a May as well as CNN planning on holding one in June. How much you want to bet that the only invitees to these debates will be from the McCain, Graham, Snowe, Collins, etc wing of the party…
RSS, I am tired of The One speaking of “hard working Americans” and “regular Americans” when it is clear he is conducting class warfare. I work hard, darned hard, for what I earn. But yet, he doesn’t include ME in his opinion of what qualifies as a “hard working American.”
Hey, Messiah, more times than you know, work hard = earn more, and hard working Americans want to keep the money they EARNED! Get it?
Cornyn and Hutchison, those are Texans aren’t they?
Yeah big boy, they are. Unlike Californians though they will be held accountable. Hutchison got pasted in her run for governor for this reason and our state house of representatives went from a one seat GOP majority to a 102 seat this last election cycle.
We tend to remember these things.
That sounds nice in theory, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Boxer should have been ridden out on a rail but “conservative” independents got hung up on Fiorina being “flawed”. Boxer, of course, is not flawed (????).
I don’t think we need to take all the filthy rich out to be killed, just anyone in either house of congress with a net worth of more than $1.50. On second thought, any government official worth that much, and any other rich person that thinks The Won is doing a great job.
Roll out the guillotine.
Boxer and Feinstein, those are Californians, aren’t they? Not Texans? Just making sure.
True. If KBH actually runs again, she’s going to get whipped in the primary.
Considering how much they donate to the Dems and how many rich Dems are in Congress, I think that might not work out the way one might think.
Typical moronic leftist class envy. How is not confiscating money from people who earned it “giving” them anything? It’s immoral in any event to tax any more than the minimum needed to fund the essential functions of government (and they are few), but it’s doubly noxious when it’s done just because you think they have too much.
These stupid leftists never seem to notice that with all of their tax-the-rich rhetoric, the socialists in charge of Congress always seem to manage to leave a few loopholes for their billionaire buddies.
Did the Citizens of United States just move a whole lot closer to the realization that our government has overthrown our constitution and is in complete and utter disregard for the will of the people? Clearly, they despise us and hold us in great contempt.
We have something less than two years to get through to the Congress and Executive Branch. If they won’t respect the will of the people clearly expressed through the ballot box, what options remain to we, the people?
They, the government, appear to be incapable of governing according to our wishes. This is called tyranny…
If these people who are wailing and whining for a third (or second) party are serious, now is the time for them to step up and make their case to the electorate. It won’t happen if they wait until 2012. I don’t have any problem with a conservative third party, if and when they are serious about it. I’m not interested in a bunch of malcontents whose primary aim seems to be to split the vote in order to defeat Republicans and elect Democrats.
Sure you can RSS, I also said kill the lawyers twice! Isn’t that like eating the cake and having it for later?
The simple fact is that most of this mischief is being perpetrated by Reid, which should put the lie to the myth that it doesn’t matter who holds the majority in the Senate – but it probably won’t.
What I wonder is will any of the new Republicans in Congress next year submit a proposal to ammend the 20th ammendment? With this latest round of lame duck legislation I believe that it is needed and I do believe that if passed that it would have enough votes of the people to see it ratified.
To be more specific, I would ammend it to read that all business of the Congress must be concluded prior to the first Tuesday in November (i.e. election day)unless it is an emergency and spell out the definition of emergency to mean in casses of war or national disaster.
By Obama’s finest hour, you mean falling down the outhouse feet first is a better argument for reelection than head first. Either way though…he stinks.
And the shotgun sings the song
The bill passed by a vote of 81-19. This cannot be ALL Harry Reid’s fault.
Clearly, many, many Republicans hold the Citizens of the United States in utter contempt as well as all the Democrats…
Voinovich
Harry Reid, exclusively, determines what legislation will come to the floor of the Senate. No bill, no vote.
Could you say that again? It is music to my ears. I am just imagining an election year where a huge chunk of the electorate is dead broke, many for years, and the Republicans are going to bat for the rich.
What in God’s name has happened to Inhofe (R) of Oklahoma?
Does Dingy Harry have pictures of him playing footsie in a public men’s room or something? Inhofe used to be my hero! What happened? How much pork in the bill is for Oklahoma? Enough to sell your soul, Senator?
You bet. We’ll be saying it loud and long, just as we did before November. And the result is going to be more of the same – fewer Democrats in the Senate, and hopefully the House.
Probably the same as with most of the others – they’re afraid that they’d be demagogued by the media for voting against “middle class tax cuts”.
Some people refuse to get it.
When I was in High School and my parents finally realized that I was a conservative and would eventually vote republican. They were just aghast that I would do such a thing and asked me why would I want to have anything to do with a party that wants to keep the rich rich….to which I answered why would you want to have anything to do with a party that wants to keep the poor poor?
Hmmmmmm, sounds like the basis for a good sitcom.
And 35 GOP Senators did the wrong thing and voted for this pork-laden spending bill. Harry Reid is not solely responsible for this mess.
This might have gone down to defeat if the GOP had stood together. But they folded like a cheap suit.
The GOP is clueless and leaderless…
True, and leaving Harry Reid in place as majority leader isn’t going to help the situation. Meanwhile, remember that a some of those yes votes are lame ducks. Give the new guys a chance. They haven’t even be sworn in yet.
FIFY. Yes, we’ll be pointing out that the free market is what gets people working again. You, on the other hand, will be trying to argue that everything we own has been “given” to us by the government, not earned through our own efforts. And you’ll be arguing, in violation of every historical lesson, that this twisted way of thinking will yield greater prosperity for everyone.
Good to know Feingold feels all our money belongs to him.
Enjoy being a former senator, Russ.
There are many GOP Senators on that yes list who are not lame ducks, some recently re-elected. John McCain said this was a big middle finger to the voters and voted for it.
They don’t care what we think.
Why should they?
John McCain was re-elected.
Agreed.
Thank you for saving me the trouble.
Ditto.
This poster is among the dangerous fools who think like that; and it would appear to be a safe bet to say that they would have no problem justifying extorting even more of productive citizens’ hard-earned money by threatening violence in the streets if the moochers and entitlement-feeders weren’t given even more that they hadn’t earned…Oh, wait, don’t they already, in a way, make those threats?

HI RED STATE SKEPTIC. A few Economics 101 factoids for your perusal.
***
Small businesses employ 70 percent of of workers.
***
Most file taxes like individuals do–I think it is called Chapter S filing.
***
They also pay a big chunk in wages, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, and taxes–this reduces their net income.
***
When they have to pay more to the Government–they have to either raise prices to the customers or reduce expenses. This may mean laying off employees.
***
Either way–more taxes to small business hurts economic recovery. And if they can’t make a profit they shut their doors. Gubmint loses the taxes and ex employees lose their jobs.
***
And–like a wise man said, “I never heard of a poor man giving anyone a job!” Comrade Obama’s actions will hurt all people. Study the Cuban, Venezuelan, and Zimbabwe economies for real life case studies in how badly this works out for most people.
