Compare and contrast: GOP vs. Dems’ plans to keep government in business

Scroll for updates…Senate Repubs to force full reading of Dems’ omnibus spending bill…

This is the Senate Republicans’ one-page joint resolution to keep the government funded through February 2011 (via GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell):

This is the Senate Democrats’ nearly 2,000-page omnibus spending spree:

DIVISION-FINAL

Take your pick.

***

Yes, finally. A GOP threat about to be fulfilled:

Republicans will paralyze the Senate floor for 50 hours by forcing clerks to read every single paragraph of the 1,924-page, $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.

Senate clerks are expected to read the massive bill in rotating shifts around the clock — taking breaks to drink water and pop throat lozenges — to keep legislative business on track, according to a Democratic leadership aide.

The bill is so long that it took the Government Printing Office two days to print it.

The Senate is currently debating the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty. It is expected to take up the omnibus spending bill on a separate and parallel track later Thursday.

If Republicans follow through on their threat, legislative business couldn’t resume until late Saturday in order to give the staff enough time to read the bill aloud, according to a Democratic leadership estimate.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), the Senate Republican Steering Committee chairman, vowed not to back down.

Not completely, in COngress, at least until: (1) Jerrymandered districts are redrawn for fairness and sensibility and not to protect a certain party’s imcumbant for re-election, or the party’s hand picked replacement when the incumbant can no longer warm the seat, (2) Absolute requirement of valid ID to be presented to vote, and (3)prosecuting will full force voter fraud.

In the People’s Republic of Mexifornia, I can say neither 2 nor 3 will ever likely be addressed, unless for some weird reason, the GOP starts getting landslide victories throughout the state.

Excellent article by Victor Davis Hanson on the two states of California:

Of course I know it was Pelosi and her extreme public policy position that caused it. They don’t. She plays them like a fiddle. Hello start treaty, Hello omnibus bill, Hello tax increases on all Americans, Hello gay military.

Thats the problem with compromise. You can’t change a whole States political leanings instantly. The people in Massachussets got their political ideaology over many years of being under the thumb of the Kennedys. They don’t know any other way.

You have to moderate your position to get elected there. Then in the Senate, you have Senators from States with extreme left ideology, some moderates and some conservatives. Who gets their way? Liberals? Moderates? Conservatives?

If everyone stuck to their States political ideology, very little public policy would be achieved. Too many diverse opinions. They compromise to get something done. I kinda like the get nothing done thing. Government should only be there to protect our liberty, not be everything to all people. When they help one, they harm another. Why do they get to decide who is helped and who is harmed? That power leads to corruption which we have seen over and over.

Here is what I found on it:

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., backed off threats today to force a reading of the New START arms-reduction treaty after the White House assailed the delay tactic as a “new low.”

Senate leaders had estimated that a full reading of the accord could take 15 hours, which would have thrown a wrench into ambitious plans to finish work on New START, an omnibus spending bill, and several other pieces of legislation before the Senate adjourns for the year.

With a big agenda and time running down in the lame-duck session, a full reading of the text could have delayed approval of the treaty and possibly forced it into the next legislative session, where it could face more Republican opposition.

It doesn’t really say why he changed his mind, but I do not see how any compormise could have helped. It would have been far better to demand that the START treaty, as well as every bill so as to tie up the session all the way out till Jan 5th!

I think the Dems promised DeMint the equivalent 15 hours of delay in lieu of the START treaty reading. I don’t know for sure what that means. Delay putting it up for a vote? The bill wasn’t submitted for discussion until this morning so maybe he got that delay.

If they get the same deal over the omnibus, they could demand a much bigger equivalent and that would mean no omnibus bill this year. Won’t happen.
