You might have heard about about Janet Napolitano telling Diane Sawyer that the Obama national security team is working “24/7, 364 days a year” to protect the country.
Ever since that statement, the burning question in everybody’s mind has been, “what is the one day off?” Wisely, not wanting to tip off those who would do us harm, Napolitano offered no further information.
As it turned out, a clue was contained in the same interview, because, at least as far as Director of National Intelligence James Clapper goes, we know that his one day off was this past Monday.
From Fox Nation:
Sawyer sat down with the trio of officials on the same day that British authorities arrested 12 men in England.
Brennan and Napolitano knew of the arrests and said that the plot would not have threatened the United States, but Director Clapper, who briefs the president daily on the nation’s security, appeared to be unfamiliar with the events in London.
“First of all, London,” Sawyer said. “How serious is it?
Any implication that it was coming here? … Director Clapper?”
“London?” Clapper said, before Brennan entered the conversation explaining the arrests.
Later in the interview, Sawyer returned to the subject.
“I was a little surprised you didn’t know about London,” Sawyer told Clapper.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t,” he replied.
Intelligence Director Clapper seemed extra surprised when he was told that Bristol Palin placed third on Dancing With the Stars and teared up a bit after being informed Leslie Nielsen had passed away:
Update: The White House responds:
The White House counterterrorism adviser acknowledged Wednesday that the reason the nation’s top intelligence official was stumped on an interview question two days ago about a major set of terror arrests in Great Britain was because his staff hadn’t told him about it.
Adviser John Brennan said that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper should have been kept abreast of the situation and that “steps” are being taken to ensure he’s not kept in the dark on such significant developments in the future. But Brennan defended Clapper, calling him the “consummate DNI.”
The Director of National Intelligence didn’t know because he wasn’t briefed by his staff, but Diane Sawyer knew?
