The Gibbs shuffle: A lateral move, not a step down

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 5, 2011 11:27 AM

Don’t rejoice.

He’s not “quitting.”

He’s not “stepping down.”

It’s a lateral move — from inside the Obama bus to an outside escort car. Same duties, different seat.

It means we’ll see more of him, not less. It means more pro-Obama spin disseminated through the MSM abettors, not less. And it means less accountability for White House propaganda, spin, and nonsense, not more.

I’d say DLTDHYOTWO. But it doesn’t apply to revolving doors.

USA Today:

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs confirmed today he will leave next month to set up his own consulting business and become an outside political adviser to President Obama.

Gibbs is likely to discuss the move in a briefing later today.

Obama, in a telephone interview with The New York Times, said Gibbs will remain a close adviser and “will continue to shape the dialogue politically for many years to come.”

The spokesman’s departure is scheduled for early February after the president’s State of the Union speech, which is tentatively set for Jan. 25.

Employee salaries are somewhat controlled, whereas a consultants fees tend to be substantially higher and paid out of various discretionary (i.e. slush fund) funds with little oversight.

It’s a promotion for Gibbs and probably a pay raise for his replacement.

    Hold the phone, Central!

If he will become an adviser to Obama, does that mean Gibbs’ salary will be coming out of Obama’s salary and he will not be paid as a federal employee?

It will be paid out of his campaign fund, like every other consultant to every other politician.

The new Press Secretary will be the obnoxious Bill Burton. He is combative, abrasive, unappologetic, hyper-partisan, and a smart ass…all the traits the Obama Administration requires in it’s spokespersons.

He can be counted on to continue the opposite spin, shift blame to Republicans, and make offensive offhand remarks at contrary reporters.

On the positive side, Obama is at least putting someone a little smarter, and pithier in the position that Bobby once held…No more uh-h-h’s, and um-m-m’s when fabricating responses…we’ll get snide remarks instead!

Not me — I’ve blocked MSNBC on my telescreens. I hope the next press secretary makes press briefings transcripts readable again by putting in the full names of reporters. Gibbs was all about himself and making things difficult to understand– just like his boss.

“We’ve been on this ride together since I won my Senate primary in 2004,” Obama said. “He’s had a six-year stretch now where basically he’s been going 24/7 with relatively modest pay.

Yeah, $172,000 a year for being a personal shield for the worst president of all time is a tad on the light side, isn’t it. But, let’s face it, he’s not being paid for his writing/speaking skills.

Gibbs, 39, plans to hop on the paid speaking circuit, giving him a chance to make more money.

He already has numerous canned speeches to draw upon:
    1. Good, ah, morning, ah, ladies and, ahhhh, gentle, ah, men ahhhhhhhh, ah,ah,hmmmmmm, you know, ahhhhhhhhhh, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ohhhhh, yes,ah,errr,ah.

What it really means is he is going to make 10 times the money. His job title is going to be “outside muscle”. Being a government employee makes him subject to monitoring. As a consultant he can work in secret.

This is very disturbing. We will now have a spinmeister who will be more convincing with his lies. And yes, I SO miss the days of Tony Snow and Dana Perrino. They were classy. The current ones are slimy, snarky creeps. I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t see that! We are surrounded by these types of people and it makes me sick.
