Pima County Sheriff: We Have Reached No Conclusions and the Investigation Into How Health Care Bill Opposition Caused This is Ongoing

By Doug Powers  •  January 10, 2011 11:08 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik, who admits to having no case-specific facts at this point and that the investigation is ongoing, has nonetheless repeatedly claimed Saturday’s murders were caused by those on the right who fan political flames.

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly interviewed Dupnik, who once again said the same thing. How he can justify alleging that baseless and irresponsible political flame-fanning opinions are responsible for violent acts while doing the exact same thing himself is anybody’s guess:

Question for the legal eagles: By making these kinds of blame-deflecting statements — aside from the sheer absurdity of an officer of the law drawing such premature and politically motivated conclusions — is Sheriff Dupnik doing nothing but helping Loughner’s attorney build a defense?

    Quite possibly and given the fact that a judge was murdered as well is going to make this a complex case. Indeed, given the obvious psychological problems of the defendant even a semi-skilled defense lawyer will be able to make hash of this, and of course sheriff Bigmouth will be doing his bit to assist. I have a terrible feeling this is going to drag on a long time, be subject to numerous appeals, hideous publicity stunts e.g. subpoenaing Sarah Palin and who knows what else. This will be the American Justice system at its worst.

    Exactly the kind of legislation the Left needs to stay in power.

    Is voting 70 of them out of office threatening?

    Inciting violence against a single member of Congress is, rightfully, a crime.

    Inciting violence against Congress as a whole is our sad duty if that is the only thing that holds them in check. That is precisely why we have the right to bear arms, Mr. Brady.

    I have always wondered why such statements seem never to be made about the killing of an ordinary, average Joe (or Jane); but rather always specify a cop, or a judge, or an elected official, etc.

    The killing of someone in those lists is reprehensible and evil, yes.
    But, is it worthy of more condemnation and outrage than the killing of an ordinary, average 9-year-old girl, or of an ordinary, average 75-year-old grandfather?

    A couple of observations:

    1. From that clip, it seems the Sheriff believes he is entitled to speculate without facts as part of his First Amendment Rights, but would deny others the same;

    2. The citizens of the State of Arizona have expressed their will by passing their own version of an immigration law. That legislation came as a result of some genuine and valid fear as to what the federal government’s failure was doing to their State and endangering their lives. The Sheriff, an elected public official whose charge is to enforce the laws of the State, has declined to enforce Arizona’s immigration laws. Apparently, the Sheriff ignores the fact that he is a law enforcer and not a law maker, and the role his refusal to enforce a State law may have in fueling the public’s frustration;
    3. Our nation’s laws related to firearms require the participation of local and state officials. One cannot purchase a firearm if they have mental issues. The determination and finding of mental instability rests with local authorities. Had the FBI been alerted to this person’s mental state, he could not have purchased a firearm. There is a reoord of Loughner”s past brushes with the law, and some strong indicators of his past mental instability. Who dropped the ball here?

    Perhaps the good Sheriff should buy a mirror.

    “Dupnik”. What an exquisitely apt name. As in “DUPed apparatchNIK”, from the old Soviet days.

    I would refer to Dupnik as a feculant bucket of swamp scum, but then the Feculant Bucket of Swamp Scum lobby would be all over my butt for slander.

    The man is obviously retarded, clearly on his way to some sort of dementia.

    He’s a simple man. I couldn’t care less about any of his opinions. If he was posting on the internet I just wouldn’t read any of his posts again.

    Forget firing him, the sheriff should relieve himself from office. He’s a disgrace, and a huge embarrassment to the citizens of Tucson.

    He should, particularly since he has been relieving himself on TV to the detriment of sane people.

    Either Dupnik has a political bombshell that would end his career (about time at his age) to hide or his name should be Dumnik.

    He certainly is a disgrace to his profession when he exhibits thinking as sloppy as he has demonstrated in the hours since the shooting. The only question remaining is, “What personal failing is he trying to hide with all this bluster?”
