Tweet of the Day, and Reagan at 100

It’s safe to assume that Michael Reagan has a slight disagreement with Ron Reagan Jr’s “dad had Alzheimers while he was president” allegation in his book:

**********

Reagan Jr’s book suggests — even though the myth has been debunked for years — that President Reagan had Alzheimer’s during his presidency, citing in part some verbal fumbling during a 1984 debate with Walter Mondale. Sure, maybe if Reagan hadn’t slipped a little during that debate he’d have won all 50 states.

Reagan Jr’s claim that his father was stricken with Alzheimers by 1986 would mean that the president was in the throes of the disease when he delivered the famous Brandenburg Speech in 1987:

Moe Lane adds:

Decide for yourself whether or not that is a man with Alzheimer’s – but never forget this. Before they hated Sarah Palin, or Dick Cheney, or Donald Rumsfeld, or Condoleeza Rice, or George W Bush, the Left hated Ronald Wilson Reagan. They hated and feared him – and not least for the way that he destroyed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in eight short years. It’s not even that he did it; it’s that he did it so apparently effortlessly. Reagan made his opponents look like chumps – which they were; I was on the other side during that decade, so I have some familiarity with the type – and he will not be forgiven for that until after his last opponent is dead in his bed of old age.

Meanwhile, plans in DC are continuing to honor the 100th birthday of a great president, relegating claims like the Alzheimer’s-in-office myth to the smearheap of history where they belong.

Some people are asking for bipartisanship? They’ve got it:

In less than a month President Ronald Reagan would have celebrated his 100th birthday and a tight-knit group, consisting of many Democrats, is stepping up to try to throw the Republican “Gipper” the biggest birthday bash ever.

At the helm of the group’s congressional and White House efforts is Michele Woodward, a former staffer of Reagan’s who serves as the executive director of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission, which President Barack Obama formed 18 months ago.

In the upper chamber Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Jim Webb (D-Va.) have been extremely instrumental in crafting the events of the Feb. 6 centennial celebrations, said Woodward, adding that they are in the process of drafting a “dear colleague” letter, which will ask members to make floor statements in honor of Reagan on Feb. 3.

Probably not the kind of bipartisanship the left had in mind, but hey, it’s a start… right?

I’ve said it for years, and I’ll say it again: Some leftists will never forgive Ronald Reagan for NOT blowing the world to smithereens like they said he would.

As for Ron Jr., I don’t know what to make of the guy. He tried to ride on his father’s name and fame as a liberal, and has failed miserably. He couldn’t eulogize his father without sticking it to religious conservatives. And now, he can’t help himself but to say that all his father’s defamers were right despite the evidence (which you think would mean more to a committed atheist).

If he thinks his dad had Alzheimer’s while he accomplished so much, you would think he would say something like “He did more with a brain disorder than almost all Presidents did without one!” But that wouldn’t be the Ron Reagan way, would it?

They think that they can dismiss his accomplishments by claiming he was ill but that, to me, would only make those accomplishments all the more remarkable!

Do they really want to claim that a conservative with alzheimers defeated the Soviet Union while they were still counting on detente?

Do they really want to claim that a conservative with alzheimers was responsible for the longest peacetime economic expansion in our history while their leaders were mostly responsible for stagflation, the misery index, large tax increases, etc…?

Are they really prepared to claim that they are so incompetent that an incapacitated conservative can run rings around them?

He also adds that it is certainly possible for a person experiencing the onset of the disease to continue to be an effective leader and cites several examples in which that is the case.

Sorry, and I know I am going to hear about it at least as much as when I defended Inception, but if Dr. Goldberg says the evidence is that Reagan had Alzheimers at that early a date, then I will go with Goldberg. It is a sad fact that the offspring of greats are all too often weak-kneed, simpering fools.

You know, I’ve noticed that too. It’s almost as if “greatness” is something that each family has a certain amount of, and it is collected into each of us for the duration of our lives. When we die it is released to be available for the next family members born.

It seems that on rare occasions one person in a family will get an extra large quantity of that greatness and be a truly amazing person.

Sadly, this leaves almost none left over, and so the great person’s own children are left with a dearth of the very thing that defined their parents.

Let’s hope for the Reagan’s sake that some of his greatness will filter down to his grand and great-grand children. Because it sure as hell missed Ron Jr.

    You mean all 57.
