Document drop: Prosecutors put a lid on Sheriff Dupnik & Co.

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 20, 2011 04:00 AM

There’s trouble in Tucson — and his name is Clarence Dupnik.

It seems a dispute with prosecutors has finally forced the office of the worst sheriff in America to stop publicly undermining the case against shooting suspect Jared Loughner.

Here’s the brief, but telling, press release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office:

Local Tucson TV station KGUN reports:

The statement put an end to an interview by Sheriff’s Bureau Chief Richard Kastigar that had been scheduled for just 45 minutes later, at 1:00 PM. Kastigar had agreed to come to KGUN9′s newsroom to discuss security video recorded in the Safeway parking lot the morning a deranged gunman opened fire, killing 6 people and wounding or injuring 14 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. CNN had booked a live interview with Kastigar, to be conducted by journalist Wolf Blitzer.

The federal government is prosecuting accused gunman Jared Lee Loughner only on those charges related to his actions against victims who were federal employees. It will be up to County Attorney Barbara LaWall to decide when, and whether, to prosecute Loughner on charges related to the other victims.

The word “controversy” contained in the statement would seem to imply some sort of disagreement or discord between the Sheriff’s Department and the office of County Attorney Barbara LaWall. But the statement did not elaborate about the nature of the controversy. When contacted by KGUN9 News, LaWall’s office declined to comment.

It’s all Rush Limbaugh’s fault!

It is about time somebody shut down the this guy. He puts the investigation at risk every time he opens his mouth on this case.

It’s time for Sheriff Clarence to announce he is not seeking reelection. Or maybe the people of Pima can help push him along to retirement.

I think a team of Roscoe and Barney Fife would be more competent.

Finally…about time. Have never, ever heard so much information (much less FALSE information from Dupe-nik as the Democrat’s canary in a coal mine) given to the press. It is unfortunate how badly this Dupsplat has damaged the case in Tucson.

Let me get this straight. Sheriff dipstick was hurting the case by openly opining during an ongoing investigation that this was talk radio’s fault? Who woulda thunk that? You mean he was helping this nut get his not guilty verdict by convincing some people that his actions were not his fault? That can’t be. You mean he openly gave his opinion, when some people who might get called to be a juror would think he must be an “expert”? No, get out of town.

I read left blogs and they were praising this sheriff for being brave and using his experience to get to the bottom of this heinous act. I don’t think Loughner can get a fair trial anywhere in this country now. Sheriff “experience” has really helped see to that. It is Guantanamo, or back to the streets for Loughner.

I’d hate to think that anyone was sandbagging here.

The memo reads as if the Sheriff’s office is going into siege mode, and will repel all requests for information with a stone wall.

Do we believe that the county prosecutor targeted Dupnik, specifically, or is this a more broadly based saturation muzzling of the office?

The trouble with a situation like this, where two groups are now in open-warfare mode, is that one (or both) will get bunker mentality.

I’m sorry… I realize that I’ve been using too much military terminology here. Allow me to take a different tack.

The issue here is that the sheriff might have to over-rely on his consigliere for information that he would normally get himself…

    ;-)

What is usually the standard response in an on-going investigation is:

The investigation is on-going. We will not be releasing any information that may damage the case, or that otherwise may prove false. We will not comment on unfounded rumors, and will not speculate on motives or methods, which may hinder the investigation. No questions. Thank you.

Instead, we get a blowhard who thinks he’s got this all wrapped up. Guess what — you and your department screwed up and didn’t follow up on leads, information, threats, actions, etc., from and about this person. It’s Dipstick’s fault. Period.

It’s kinda sad to watch the demise of Sheriff Dipstick’s career….on second thought, it’s probably the most justice seen in Pima county in the 50 years he’s been sheriff. And all by his own hand. Note to self: buy more popcorn. This is getting good.

That’s the first “term of ridicule” that crossed my mind a couple of days ago…we used to use it a lot way back in the high school and college days.

But, kudos to you for posting it first (at least, that I saw)!

    But, seriously folks…:
Why is this clown sherriff behaving like this?
Is it purely for ideological reasons?
    …For “The Cause”?

Or, has he been told that he will be financially taken care of if does what he’s been doing?…Say, by a Soros-type of moneyed, anti-American, domestic enemy-type of organization?

Perhaps it’s time to follow the money, to see who will pay his legal bills, or who will give him a job after his current one; or, who is behind whoever will pay his legal bills, or will give him a new job.
The domestic enemy is called “The “Shadow Party” for a reason….

Bingo. Dupnik intimated that they knew of Loughner and his problems, yet Loughner seems to have been ok’d when it came time to purchase a firearm. Wonder if the Dupnik was involved in that disaster.

Looking forward to the DA having to staunchly refute Dupnik, Chris Matthews, and every other leftist accusing Conservatives for the shooter’s actions.

Unfortunately, Dupnik’s actions mean big $$$$$$$$$ added to this trial and maybe lots of mistrials, change of venue, etc., ad nauseam.

The “Justice Department” being what it is, I would suggest forcefully that DA LaWall files charges of Murder 1′ and Attempted Murder (6 counts), plus 14 counts of Attemped Murder 1′ and Assault 1′ with a deadly weapon against Loughner immediately. I would expect Holder and company will find some way of cutting this cretin free. Has to be one of those “victim of his environment”, “poor misunderstood boy with a bad childhood and uncaring parents” deals.

As an LEO-type said on Rush yesterday, if Loughner made threats to others in the past, why was he not involuntarily committed for a psych eval?

If the media wasn’t trying to push his meme, they would have asked him how many threats it takes for that to happen to someone in Tucson.

Also wondering….perhaps a lawyer could provide an answer…

Does the DA have a professional obligation to safeguard the case against Loughner? By shutting down Dupenik? Could she be sanctioned for not doing so?

Would she be obligated to bring any charges against Dupenik for his incompetence?
