The real snow job in D.C.: Obamacare waivers skyrocket to 729 + 4 states; 4 new SEIU waiver winners

The nation’s capital is freaking out over a winter snowstorm.
But everyone else should be up in arms over the real snow job in Washington this week.
While the Democrats continued to extol Obamacare and the president defended the behemoth law during the Date of the Union, HHS was quietly presiding over a massive Obamacare Waiver-mania explosion.
When last we examined the growing list, privileged escapees topped 222.
Now: The list now at 729 — plus 4 states (Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, and Tennessee).
Among the many new union refugees are 4 new SEIU locals :
-SEIU Health and Welfare fund, 2000 with 161 enrollees
-Service Employees 32BJ North Health Benefit Fund* representing 7,020 enrollees
-SEIU Local 300, Civil Service Forum Employees Welfare Fund representing 2,000 enrollees
-SEIU Health & Welfare Fund representing 1,620
This is in addition to the three other previous SEIU waiver winners: Local 25 SEIU in Chicago with 31,000 enrollees; Local 1199 SEIU Greater New York Benefit Fund with 4,544 enrollees; and SEIU Local 1 Cleveland Welfare Fund with 520 enrollees.
Which brings the total number of Obamacare-promoting SEIU Obamacare escapees to an estimated 45,000 workers represented by seven SEIU locals.
HHS puts the total number of union waiver recipients at 182:
Collectively-Bargained Employer-Based Plan Applicants: Most of the other health plans receiving waivers are multi-employer health funds created by a collective bargaining agreement between a union and two or more employers, pursuant to the Taft-Hartley Act. These “union plans” are employment based group health plans and operate for the sole benefit of workers. They tend to be larger than other typical group health plans because they cover multiple employers. There are also single-employer union plans that have received a waiver. In total, 182 collectively-bargained plans have received waivers.
The rest:
Of all the waivers granted to date:
* Employment-Based Coverage: The vast majority – 712 plans representing 97 percent of all waivers – were granted to health plans that are employment-related.
o Self-Insured Employer Plans Applicants: Employer-based health plans received most of the waivers – 359.
o Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs): HRAs are employer-funded group health plans where employees are reimbursed tax-free for qualified medical expenses up to a maximum dollar amount for a coverage period. In total, HHS has approved 171 applications for waivers for HRAs.
* Health Insurers: Sixteen waivers were granted to health insurers, which can apply for a waiver for multiple mini-med products sold to employers or individuals.
* State Governments: Four waivers have gone to State governments. States may apply for a waiver of the restricted annual limits on behalf of issuers of state-mandated policies if state law required the policies to be offered by the issuers prior to September 23, 2010.

A snort-worthy new escapee: Obamacare sympathizers at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, whose board of trustees includes Obama health care czar Nancy-Ann DeParle.
Culture of Corruption – DeParle flashback:
Former Kansas Democrat Governor Kathleen Sebelius won Senate confirmation as Health and Human Services Secretary. But the real power lies with with newly-created health czar Nancy-Ann Min DeParle. Her official title: Director of the White House Office for Health Reform.
DeParle ran the behemoth Medicare and Medicaid programs under Bill Clinton. She parlayed her government experience into a lucrative private-sector stint. Over the past three years, she made nearly $6 million from her work in the health care industry. Despite President Obama’s loud denunciations of the revolving-door lobbyist culture in Washington, DeParle’s industry ties didn’t bother the White House.
She served as an investment advisor at JP Morgan Partners, LLC; sat on the board of directors at Boston Scientific Corporation; and held directorships at Accredo Health Group Inc., Triad Hospitals (now part of Community Health Systems), and DaVita Corporation. In all, she sat on at least ten boards while advising JP Morgan and working as managing director at a private equity firm, CCMP Capital.
From 2002 to 2008, while holding all those titles, DeParle also served as a member of the government-chartered Medicare Payment Advisory Committee (MedPAC), an influential panel that advises Congress on what Medicare should cover and at what price. Last month, former MedPAC member DeParle cozily announced that Obama was “open to making recommendations of [MedPAC] mandatory unless opposed by a joint resolution of Congress.”
Obama famously signed an early executive order requiring appointees to pledge not to participate “in any particular matter involving specific parties that is directly and substantially related to any former employer or former clients” for a period of two years from the date of his or her appointment. But it’s hard to imagine any health care reform-related issue that won’t involve one of DeParle’s former employers, clients, and corporate boards in the health care industry. She earned at least $376,000 from Cerner Corporation, for example, which specializes in health information technology. As health czar, DeParle has unmeasured clout in directing $19 billion of federal stimulus money earmarked for, yes, health information technology.
Last week, a Washington, D.C. citizen watchdog filed suit to force the White House to disclose which health care lobbyists and executives it had met with this year to discuss insurance takeover legislation. White House counsel Greg Craig refused to disclose which administration officials attended the meetings. But at least two of the industry visitors have ties to DeParle. William C. Weldon is chairman of Johnson & Johnson, which paid DeParle $7,500 for a recent speech. Wayne Smith is chief executive of Community Health Systems, which merged with Triad Hospitals – where DeParle served on the board of directors. DeParle’s options were converted to cash payments worth $1.05 million.
Despite Obama’s lip service to transparency, the public is in the dark about which assets DeParle has divested and how many times, if any, DeParle has recused herself from policy matters and meetings. Czardom has its privileges.

You can see the updated list for yourselves right here.
Big hat tip to John Sexton in the Hot Air Green Room, who reports the rather curious delays in HHS’s posting of the new updates:
Last year, the HHS website was very efficient posting a list of ObamaCare waivers that had been granted. Ususally by the 3rd of the month the list was updated to included waivers that had been approved in the previous month. But something happened in January. Two weeks into the month no new waivers had been posted.
I was curious what caused the delay so I made some calls. Last Tuesday I spoke by phone with a media relations employees of HHS. She was not allowed to speak on the record, but after checking with folks at OCIIO who handle the ObamaCare waivers, she was able to inform me in a “not for attribution” way that the latest batch of waivers had in fact been processed. There was no specific hold-up that she could identify, they were simply running behind in getting the information on the website.
Well today, the day after the President’s State of the Union, the new waivers are up. You may recall that there were 222 such waivers approved in November. That number has now jumped to 729 through the end of December. The total number of people covered by the waivers has gone from 1.5M to just under 2.2M. The list includes the usual assortment of union locals and businesses.
I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to suggest that OCIIO was asked to hold this development until after the SOTU. Indeed the latest waiver approved in the list is from December 30th. There is an addendum at the bottom of the page noting that four states–Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, and Tennessee–have applied for waivers covering another 93,000 people. The addendum is dated 1/21/11, but I can assure you it was not there on 1/21 or even Monday…
More rich fodder for the House and Senate GOP probes of the Obamacare Waiver-mania program the Democrats don’t want to talk about…

A-ho!e$.
*We were on our way to single payer as in Canada, but it appears Obamacare will eventually implode with all this waiver activity; The harsh light of reality has exposed this legislation for what it is, the worst in American history, unless you are (the) one and intent on destroying the country, as some of us believe.
*The pressure will build against this monstrosity and expect the Senate to take up a vote on full repeal before April; Jim DeMint, among others, has a full repeal and replace bill in the works.
*P-BO, one and done!
From affirmative action, to unequal tax rates for different levels of wage earners, to Obamacare waivers for cronies, I’m sure glad we all have equal protection under an evenly executed system of law.
I need a waiver, I gotta join a union quick!
Of course if the legislation is fully implemented, these waivers will mean nothing, because there won’t be any private insurance left to buy.
Yeah, how nice. I especially like the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund (351,000 enrollees) who prefer to suck the lifeblood out of taxpayers for their cushy Cadillac plans they certainly wouldn’t want to give up now, would they?
In 20 years, we will all be regularly travelling to China for healthcare. The chinese education system will tell their students how America used to be a capitalist country – free and prosperous, but how an unqualifed, Kenyan born man named Obama took America down a path that caused it to break and never recover. 200+ years of greatness destroyed in one 4 year term by an affirmative action liberal fantasy of presidency.
I love how Obama always says he wants to level the playing field and make everything “fair”. This is his idea of “fair”. What a moron. He doesn’t even realize how much his words and actions don’t match! He is seriously deluded and should NOT be leading the Free world! This is a very dangerous situation. I think he will crack.
Is everyone really sure we should ignore the fact that he’s ineligible?
He told us he was ineligible when he said on his website that his citizenship at birth was governed by the British Nationality Act of 1948.
How can a Britsh subject be a natural born citizen?
I have applied for a waiver. I’ll let you know when it comes in…
Happy: the communist way is actually to control the masses and have a specialized, well-connected class of people who get special treatment as long as they keep the status quo going and the supreme leaders in power. Obama is doing exactly what he always dreamed of doing. He is establishing his communist dream in the U.S.A!!!
Eventually, you will have to change what U.S.A. stands for. In the future, in might refer to the Unified Socialist Appropration.
Our top medical professional – head of the Canadian Medical Association says our system will be not be sustainable. Here is the link:

Hilariously sick thing is that while Americans can easily look to the North and see a public system that is clearly not working, Obama promotes universal healthcare and claims, along with his followers, that Canada’s system is working pretty well – absolutely stunning.
John Edwards was right. There are two Americas.
The Progressives have created it. The politically favored and the serfs.
Welcome to Zimbabwe.
Kenyanesia. When you are born in Kenya and get Indonesian citizenship as a youth.
I’ll tell you what, let’s ALL get a waiver…
Hum…I was thinking that all persons born or naturalized…yada yada…were entitled to equal protection of the laws.
Wouldn’t that also mean equal protection ~from~ the law? Don’t we all have a right to opt out if some of us do?
The good news is that the appeals court is going to expedite hearing Judge Hudsons ruling in the Virginia case that Obamacare is uncontitutional. The sooner the courts kill this monster the better. (sorry for the vitiolic rhetoric)
Congress has no authority to force anyone to buy anything. Judge Hudson will be upheld.
If we still have any of the Constitution left. Since we surrendered Art II sec 1 in the last election, I’m not sure….
123upnorth>> Hilariously sick thing is that while Americans can easily look to the North and see a public system that is clearly not working, Obama promotes universal healthcare and claims, along with his followers, that Canada’s system is working pretty well – absolutely stunning.
Unfortunately, few Americans have seen the great French-Canadian film (English subtitles)”The Barbarian Invasion.” It is a comedy/drama that spends a lot of time showing us the hideous state of hospital care up north. A dying man is in a double room with some Pakistanis(?) who are cooking their tribal foods in the room, etc. Hideous crowding, although there is a whole floor that is closed off. A union thug is bribed to get the dying man moved to another room. Meanwhile, the wait for an MRI is ridiculously long so the patient’s son spirits him across the boarder to a U.S. hospital which is ridiculously clean and friendly and efficient…comically so. Still, the point is made. Get it from Netflix. Even the darn socialist French-Canadians mock their hideous system. (Warning: Assisted suicide of the terminally ill man is also a major theme, which many would undoubtedly find objectionable.)
Let me see now. We have a BRAND SPANKING NEW
health care bill and already there are over 700 waivers for it? Who is running the asylum here?
has anyone seen this story on Facebook yet? Sounds like a giant steaming pile of BS to me.
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/note.php?note_id=10150126227359540&id=696974223
I expect a lot more stuff like this now.
I work for a small, local business with one location and no union attachment.
I’ve received notice that my health care premium is going up 12% this year. Furthermore, my selected insurance plan is being discontinued in 2012, forcing me into to a plan that currently costs more than four times as much as I pay now. The insurance company has no estimate for the actual cost in 2012.
I’m screwed.
Nothing raises the cost of any insurance policy as much as making it mandatory does.
I remember in the early ’70s when Oklahoma made auto insurance (liability) mandatory. Mine tripled within 4 months, and doubled again within a year.
Mandatory medical care will be the same, except exponentially higher.
Of course. Who do you think was lobbying for mandatory insurance? Same bunch who lobby for seatbelt laws.
Per the HHS webpage with the list:
And here I thought that the health care law was supposed to do what the waiver does. Go fig. I blame Obama for insufficiently explaining the law.
So roughly one out of every 150 Americans are relieved from this health care mandate for at least an extra year. If this keeps up, the number of people getting waivers will be more than the number of uninsured and underinsured people that ObamaCare is supposed to “help.” You’d think they’d get the point already.
Good luck with getting the waiver, WarEagle. Been thinking about applying for one myself (via the link on the HHS site, in case anyone else was wondering).
To Ignatius Reilly: I’ve heard of The Barbarian Invasions before, and now that I’ve heard more about it, I’ll probably check it out. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture and got rave reviews when it came out in 2003. Ebert gave it four stars. I wonder how many stars he’d give it now, seeing that he’s gung-ho behind the health care law. Do you think TBI would win the Oscar if it had come out now, Ignatius?
Actually, he does realize, he just hopes that you don’t.
That’s all part of his plan. The other part is he thinks he’s going to pay for Obamacare with all the money in fines companies are going to have to pay for not offering health insurance. Odumba$$ doesn’t realize if it’s cheaper to pay a fine than it is to subsidize health insurance there’s no way can afford to fund health insurance using that pool of money.
The overt arrogance of this Obama guy is simply frightening. I hope Congress starts hearings soon; these people must be stopped.
But think of all those people with pre-existing conditions and 26 yr old students who now have coverage thanks to you paying more. Doesn’t that make you sleep better at night?
Enjoy it because they’ll be wanting more shortly, so soon we’ll look at these as the “good old days”.

Saw our lovely hostess this AM on Fox and Friends. Michelle always has such interesting (and valid) facts and figures to tell the American public.
Our nation is teetering on the brink of disaster, and the Oblame-o is out campaigning already. Moving centrist, but still having his Marxist ideals in mind. Yikes.
Being on Fox is great, but is largley ‘preaching to the choir’. I’d like to see her get on CNN or MSLSD occasionally. Or, even haggle with the hags on ‘The Spew’. She may draw in some converts when they see a smart, rational Conservative knock down the Left’s arguments with logic and historical precedent.
Why do we need waivers? Isn’t that the real story of this debacle?
Instead of issuing all these waivers, why don’t they just tell us who they want to punish?
It’s rather obvious by now, that their intent was to make it appear that “everyone will have to share the pain,” when in fact, they never intended to have the “favored few” impacted financially.
It’s like looking at the Russian Duma granting favored status to those who can ante up!
I saw her also, and she was amazing, as always. One thing that bothers me, however…they never allow her enough time!! She needs more time!! Fox & Friends is notorious for cutting their guests short because they are up against a “hard break”. As soon as I hear Kilmeade or Doocey start going, “Uh-huh”, “right”, etc. while the guest is talking, it is a signal that they have to wrap it up. Sometimes, the guest is only on for 30 seconds and they are already being cut. They need to balance their time better. I know they can’t allow the guests to ramble on and on, but there are some, like MM, who are saying such interesting and informative things, that you want to hear more!!
I do agree that she is preaching to the choir…same as on this blog. But the choir needs to hear her too!
Absolutely!! That is the bottom line. And WHY isn’t anyone asking the regressives that very question?? I don’t hear any good quesitions being asked, even at FOX. Why??
HappyScrapper: I agree with what you are saying, and, yes, MM is preaching to the choir. Sometimes the choirmembers need a refresher course along the way.
Also, that always irritates me when Steve, Gretchen, and Brian start their “uh, huh” and “yes,” and such to wrap it up. However, they are much more entertaining than anything I would see on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, etc. I occasionally stop in on the channels, and it is drivel. and sad. and boring.
Why? Co-conspirators.
I too change channels occasionally, and they are almost impossible to watch without a rise in blood pressure! Pure nonsense, most of them. Hard to believe so many people do not recognize the truth, or, if they do, try to cover it up!
I wonder if anyone has written to F&F and told them how annoying that is? And I also wonder if they TELL their guests they have a certain length of time to talk? One would assume so. At any rate, they need to find some other way to warn the talker that time is winding down. I would even prefer a one-minute warning buzzer or something!
MM…if you are reading this, maybe you could tell them that is annoying some of their FANS!!
Bitter Clingers & Typical White People’s Local 4 is accepting applications now.
Except that when leftists invite someone like MM on to their propaganda shows it is always for the purpose of a multiple attackers on one ambush.
“Logic and historical precedent” doesn’t work when they set up the segment to begin with a false narrative. The victim spends her whole time trying to overthrow the false narrative instead of getting to the real argument, and she has to do it while getting shouted down and belittled and shut out.
If she seems to be making any headway at all, the discussion is diverted to something else (straw man, false issue, whatever) where she is blocked from talking, and then the segment ends.
The LSM needs to be destroyed, not validated. They are horrible people who have no interest in real dialogue.
As per the study on men’s attention spans and attractive reporters dispensing the news, I am proud to say that I am able to watch michelle malkin with my eyes and listen with my ears at the same time. Yes, she is stunnningly beautiful and yes I can understand and process everything she says.
Children – it’s always for the children…
Who wants to bet that this “waiver” thing was planned behind closed doors long ago?
The Ds are masters of figuring the future.
The Rs suck at it.
It’s Animal Farm, yet again: “– but some are more ‘equal’ than others.” Back in the Soviet Union, the Communist Party apparatchik always had things a little easier than the average Ivan.
Like the old American Express card commercial said: “It pays to be a member.”
On January 27th, 2011 at 11:16 am,
Perhaps true; but when you think about it, wouldn’t that be a good thing? Or do we want them both to become equally adept at this sort of thing?
Bears repeating, they are nothing more than the propaganda arm of the Communist/Democrat party.
Simple House Bill would be to make waivers by the President illegal, else just give EVERYONE a waiver.
And now, focusing like a laser beam to create new jobs, the WH has revealed that it will launch another gun control offensive in the next two weeks.
Another of those Obama WTF moments.
Owebowmao wants to be firearms salesman of the year again. None too soon, either, prices for ammo were starting to drop.
Over at the Human Events website today, I saw an article with the “WTF” in the title…I had to do a double take until I realized the writer meant something about the future – ha!
Hasn’t Obeyme won the Firearms Salesman of the Year two years running?
Always note what he isn’t saying. What he says is BS to appease the masses, what he is silent about is what’s on the agenda.
Yep, he’s going for the hat trick. Congress won’t cooperate, so he’s likely to do Executive orders and regulations through ATF to accomplish whatever restrictions he’s seeking.
Stock up now, while you still can.
We wrote to our Congressman last week asking him to sponsor a bill that would end the waivers. After all, the bill is so good and so necessary (said the Dems just last week), and Americans will just DIE if it’s repealed. And yet, all these greedy corporations are getting waivers and denying poor Americans their right to enjoy the full benefits of Obamacare. I thought Dems were the party of little people but they are granting waivers to evil big businesses. It’s a sacriledge, I tell ya.
The Emperor has no clothes.
His minions are zombie-like cult-like, Cult figure worshippers.
It is my theory that Obama has already read the writing on the wall and will not be on the ballot in 2012. I believe that he is now focusing on setting up his post-presidential career as an socialist activist and wants to go out having shot his wad laying the groundwork for advancing his agenda in the future. Think of Carter on global human rights and Gorbachev on global eco-socialism.
Speaking of which, something has to be done to circumvent ObaMaos EOs or else he’s going to doom this nation with his EOs and Czar appointments well before we get a new president in 2012….if we even make it to 2012.
Well, a new president in January 2013….still questionable at this point.
The best thing Obama could do to address Tucson shootings would be to arrest America’s Worst Sheriff for refusing/failing to enforce the law.
What’s the point of passing more laws to make it harder for kooks like Loughner to get guns when the current laws already provide for? It would just be another law for America’s Worst Sheriff to fail to enforce.
These Chicago thugs are despicable. And now Obama’s idol is Ronald Regan. And they are doing it wide open in public. And getting away with it.

The IRS isn’t smart enough to keep all this straight.
I fervently wish this were true, but signs are he’s assembling his re-election team in Chicago. He may even run for re-re-election in 2016.
The House should merely pass a bill that if waivers are granted for any, they must be granted to all. Equal protection under the law.
Let’s watch the president try to veto that and explain it. A case could be made for impeachment. Granting waivers to political supporters is corruption.
Running for President when you’re ineligible is treason.
