Big Labor Upset at Dems Choice of Charlotte NC for Convention (it’s the barbecue, stupid)

By Doug Powers  •  February 5, 2011 02:27 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

The barbecue for which Charlotte, NC is famous (unbeknownst to Charlotte, NC) is evidently so good that other factors were overlooked when choosing a site for the People’s Convention this year, such as that only 3.2 percent of North Carolina workers are union members.

Some aren’t happy:

In picking North Carolina as the site of their 2012 convention, Democrats didn’t just pick a state that’s relatively unfriendly to unions. They picked the least unionized state in the entire country.

It was a stinging rebuke to one of the Democratic Party’s most loyal and influential constituencies. And labor leaders are fuming at the slight.

The selection was “a calculated affront,” said Rick Sloan, communications director for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

What’s worse, Sloan noted, the convention is set to begin on Mon., Sept. 3, 2012 — Labor Day.

“Going to a right-to-work state and starting a convention on Labor Day for the Democrats?” he said. “Wow. That’s quite the equation.”
[...]
The hotel workers’ union specifically asked the Democratic National Committee several months ago not to consider Charlotte because of its lack of union hotel rooms.

Sheesh — they might as well hold the convention at Walmart!

Union leaders should fear not, because during the convention Kathleen Sebelius will be riding around the arena in a golf cart and using a hot dog cannon to launch Obamacare waivers into the crowd… for anybody there who doesn’t already have one, that is. Rest assured, things will be smoothed over with the unions on day one, probably even before the first mandatory coffee break.

But maybe the fact that the DNC claims they’re shunning corporate and PAC money and opting only for grassroots donations to pay for the convention means that they simply couldn’t afford a fully unionized city. If that’s the case, welcome to the party — thankfully it’s BYOI (bring your own irony).

Wouldn’t a national holiday like labour day allow more people to attend the convention than otherwise, since they will be off work and won’t have to ask permission or call in sick to their employer in order to attend? Therefore, if more people can attend the convention and if the Democrats can drum up support in the minds of the greater number of attendees, isn’t that a positive?

You clearly haven’t seen his latest polling there. He is doing quite well actually.

Obama’s gain in popularity has been fueled by voters in the center. A year ago his approval rating with moderates was 59%. Now it’s up to 69%. This improvement in his standing, along with the lukewarm reaction of voters in the state to the leading 2012 Republican Presidential contenders, has him in position to repeat his surprise North Carolina victory from 2008. He leads the four most likely GOP contenders at this point by margins ranging anywhere from 3 to 9 points in this month’s poll.

Mitt Romney comes the closest to Obama this time, trailing 47-44. Mike Huckabee is next, with a 49-45 deficit. Newt Gingrich is down 50-44 and and Sarah Palin as usual fares the weakest of the GOP hopefuls trailing Obama by nine points at 50-41.

As elsewhere in the South, the infection is spreading. The one advantage of Socialism in America (at least to the Socialists) is that the artificial wage and property inflation allows them to cash out and carpetbag their way into free states. Insidious but effective, and it encourages them in their folly – just so long as everyone elses’ money holds out. The quintessential Ponzi scheme.

Primer on the vital topic of NC BBQ

    - Our NC “BBQ” is exclusively pork (which I realize is an upsetting idea to Texans and other ignorant rowdies not from around here)

    - All NC BBQ is only lightly sauced, especially the Eastern style

    - The BBQ from the eastern part of the state has only a thin vinegar sauce with not much more than salt and pepper

    - The BBQ from the central part of the state toward the west has a thicker sauce that includes tomato product but never as thick as is often served in other states on beef BBQ

    - Fans of Eastern (real) NC BBQ despise fans of Western (faux) NC BBQ, and vice versa

    - Strictly speaking, there is no real “western” NC BBQ; it is the eastern and central parts of the state that have the BBQ traditions. BBQ from the central part is termed “western” only in contrast to “eastern” BBQ.

    - Charlotte (and the mountainous west) are not really part of the NC BBQ scene. But, yes, as the Charlotte mayor said, they can “truck it in” if the first lady wants it! (Actually, they have a good deal of experience “trucking it in,” although all North Carolinians recognizes that BBQ is not an indigenous product of the Charlotte area.)

    - If you come to NC and want to try some BBQ, I suggest the BBQ sandwich, which is extremely popular, although BBQ is often served on a plate as well. Here is the important thing if you have a sandwich: Follow the natives. No matter how weird it sounds to you, have a “chopped” BBQ sandwich with slaw. Nothing else. A few years ago no self-respecting waitress in a que shack would even ask how you wanted your sandwich. But so many yankee visitors have come through to have some BBQ and then proceeded to specify how it should be served that now most places will ask people how they want it. Have it like the locals do — chopped, with slaw — before you start “improving it.”

(I’ll be going out in just about three hours for some BBQ for lunch. I’m going with the sandwich. Yum.)

I am an Easterner in the NC BBQ world so I am stretching to say a lot about the “western” version; I’ve only occasionally had it. NC BBQ geography, btw, is amazingly specific: the BBQ “west” starts around Greensboro with its headquarters in the town of Lexington. The Eastern que meccas are probably the towns of Wilson and Rocky Mount, although Raleigh-Durham is clearly in the eastern zone.)

And a bit more Carolina que chatter…Eastern NC BBQ is closely associated with tobacco culture. It was a popular street-vendor food sold going back a full century or so when farmers and their families would bring their tobacco into the bigger “farm towns” where the warehouses and auction markets were located. Thus, the strong tradition in towns like Wilson and Rocky Mount.

This is true. I was recently in Eastern Long Island for a friend’s wedding. There are houses out there that are about 1500-1800 square feet and 50 years old that sell for $500,000. Down here in NC, near Charlotte, Concord, Kannapolis and other nearby towns and cities, and even in Charlotte proper, $350,000 will buy you a 5000 square foot home. $500,000 will buy you a bona fide mansion.

I would guess that before then, the figure would have been around 5% if such a statistic were used prior to the 60′s. This is why I firmly believe that liberals are traitors in that they want to trash the constitution, and re-write it to be a socialist/communist document. I once worked at a barbecue diner in the Triad. The barbecue slaw (or red slaw) recipe was: 50 lbs. cabbage, 6 gallons ketchup, 3 gallons vinegar, 3 pounds sugar, and a small package of the owner’s proprietary blend of spices. The slaw tasted identical to the slaws at the places in Lexington. What differentiates those places is that their pork is far better. Anyone who wants “western style” NC barbecue should avoid Guilford and Forsyth counties, and go for the real stuff in Lexington.

Once, outside of NC, I tried a pork sandwich advertised as “Carolina style barbecue.” It had a scoop of coleslaw on it. They might as well have put gummibears on it.
