Gallup Poll: And the Greatest US President of All Time Is…

By Doug Powers  •  February 19, 2011 09:33 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

Time Magazine’s spin on this might be that Reagan and Obama are tied for first, because as you know, aside from their views on big government, national defense, abortion, appeasement and wealth transfer, they’re virtually indistinguishable.

Here’s the full list:

1. Ronald Reagan (19%)
2. Abraham Lincoln (14%)
3. Bill Clinton (13%)
4. John F. Kennedy (11%)
5. George Washington (10%)
6. Franklin Roosevelt (8%)
7. Barack Obama (5%)
8. No opinion (5%)
9. Theodore Roosevelt (3%)
10. Harry Truman (3%)
11. George W. Bush (2%)
12. Thomas Jefferson (2%)
13. **Jimmy Carter (1%)
14. Dwight Eisenhower (1%)
15. George H. W. Bush (1%)
16. Other(1%)
17. None (1%)
18. Andrew Jackson (0%)
19. Lyndon Johnson (0%)
20. Richard Nixon (0%)

**Carter poll results have a margin of error of plus or minus Hamas

Here’s how it broke down along party lines:

null

After the hype of 2008 and 2009, would you have thought that within a couple of years Democrats would choose two other presidents from their party as greater than Barack Obama?

I’m still amazed that Obama cracks 7 out of 20… My own opinions on Clinton aside, I have to like how he more than doubles the One – you can walk away from the podium now, Barack. And look who is sneaking up the list, just outside the top 10. Miss him yet?

But of all of it, the big point is that LBJ is dead last, tied with a man that the left has vilified for more than 40 years. Apparently that 5% they gave Obama took all of the wind out of their sails. There is only enough room to defend one disastrous big-government liberal.

I agree with them about Reagan and Lincoln. But Washington should rate higher.

“All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management.

The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations.

Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of Government employees.

A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government until their demands are satisfied. Such action, looking toward the paralysis of Government by those who have sworn to support it, is unthinkable and intolerable.”

Thank God for Ronald Reagan, the Greatest US President of All my lifeTime. (Washington and Lincoln rank higher on my All time list).

Had Reagan not run in 1980, and had Jimmy Carter won a second term, then four more years of Carter likely would have led to George Orwell’s “1984″ becomming our reality in 1984.

Reagan was able to turn back the tide of Marxist/Leninist big government enough to buy us another 30 years. But the 110th and 111th Congresses, of which Obama was directly involved (first as a Senator, and then as pResident), have been worse than a second term of Carter.

We’re right back on the precipice again, but now, 30 years later, we have another generation of citizens who were raised in union-dominated secular progressive public schools. Witness that George Washington doesn’t even register in the top 5 for Democrats.

We have a bigger task ahead of us now than we did 30 years ago. Annual deficits now exceed what the TOTAL DEBT was under Reagan!

The population has even less understanding now than they did then about the true Judeo-Christian foundations of this country and our laws.

Harry S. Truman (who made the top 10 in this list) understood that:

The fundamental basis of this Nation’s law was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings which we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul. I don’t think we emphasize that enough these days.

If we don’t have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.

Address Before the Attorney General’s Conference on Law Enforcement Problems

Really? Actor turned president? He wasn’t that great.

Reagan was a success in six different careers. None of which involved “Community Organizing”. Yeah. You’re right. Not much talent there.

Polling the general population, products of public mis-education gets you cultural and historical illiteracy at is finest.

Like polling 4 year olds about the national debt.

“Should your daddy buy you toys and candy or pay his bills?”

    Toys/Candy: 95%
    Bills: 2%
Unsure or on potty break 3%

    Spot on, swede!

What? No Calvin Coolidge? The best conservative presidential one-liners come from this guy.
“Don’t expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong.”
“Prosperity is only an instrument to be used, not a diety to be worshipped.”
“Collecting more taxes than absolutely necessary is legalized robbery.”

wildcat84 i agree totally. No president has damaged the Constitution more than lincoln. Just read his 1st inaugural address, look at his power grab over the supreme court, closing hundreds of northern newspapers for dissent of his policies and the thousands he imprisoned (northern mind you) as he suspended habeas corpus (just to name a few). just a little research will reveal that he was nothing more than a tyrant who wanted to be king.

Lincoln #2, should be dead last. Destroyed States Rights, ignored the Constitution. Jefferson should be #1.

Reagan is number 1 because people remember what came before him (Carter) and how we as a nation were treated on the world stage. Inflation, national malaise, perceived as weak by the thugs of the world. Reagan came in and the hostages in Iran came home after more than 400 days in captivity, he spoke the real truth to power(evil) “…tear down this wall.” Communism collapsed from the inside when confronted by American fortitude.
Reagan made Americans feel great to be Americans, unlike Carter and the current president.
Voting “present” is great when you are in the state legislature or the senate but is not an option when you are the president of this country. It is not a mark of leadership or greatness. No surprises there. The people have not forgotten what we had then and are eager to return to those days of greatness.
