Global rumors that Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi has been shot roiled the markets this afternoon.
Oil prices tumbled $2 a barrel.
The White House says it has “no reason to believe” Gaddafi is dead.
But given how CIA director Leon Panetta gets his intelligence — quick, get him the TV remote control! — there’s no reason to believe the White House knows anything more than you or I do at this point.
Zing! Doug Powers: “Why would Gaddafi be shot? Jay Carney just said this has nothing to do with specific leaders.”
Meanwhile, Foggy Bottom gets a clue. Too little, too late:
