MSNBC Host: Hey, Winston Churchill Screwed Around More Than Obama Does!

By Doug Powers  •  March 17, 2011 07:28 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

MSNBC’s Martin Bashir comes to the rescue of President Obama, defending him from those who are picking on him for golfing and recording shows about NCAA brackets during some pretty tough times all around. Bashir’s defense is this: Oh yeah, well at least he’s not goofing off like Winston Churchill did:

Did MSNBC’s Martin Bashir just compare Barack Obama to Winston Churchill? Yes he did, with Churchill portrayed as a chain-smoking, stogie lover who drank all day and painted landscapes to beat depression while Obama is seen as a man strong in character who has defeated the demon nicotine and shuns alcohol.

Not only is this comparison patently unfair to Winston Churchill, it turns a blind eye to Obama’s predilection for golf and vacations. This Sunday the Obamas are off to Rio for yet another vacation. And even London’s Daily Mail has taken issue with the amount of golf played played by Obama, pointing out that this President has played more rounds of golf in two years than Bush did in eight.

If you’ve never seen Martin Bashir, it’s because he’s on MSNBC at 3 p.m. — more people watched me make breakfast this morning than saw this — but that doesn’t make it any less desperate:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

In 2009, Bashir’s co-tingler at MSNBC, Chris Matthews, said that Obama’s approach on Afghanistan was “too much Chamberlain, not enough Churchill,” so maybe Obama should pick up a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label and some stogies on the way home from the golf course this weekend and not listen to a thing Martin Bashir says.

Speaking of WWII, I wonder what kind of fate would have awaited the world had Obama been in politics then. Thankfully, through the miracle of computer technology, we can now put current figures into past situations to see how history might have changed. For example, here’s Obama with General MacArthur returning to organize the Philippines:

And, why does the “leader” of the free world need cover? He is an adult with free agency, and can do whatever he pleases. In this case, it pleases him to go golfing, and to go on a “much needed vacation” in Rio de Janeiro. God knows he never gets any time away from the hard questions that plague him daily! (Hard Sarc intended.)

To even suggest that the President needs someone “to have his back”, predisposes the notion that he is doing something he shouldn’t…or, in this case, NOT doing something he should, which in this case, proves that he really is ineffectual as a leader.

I didn’t see too many jobs in civilian life that required camping out while people were shooting at me so I thought I made a good choice. Don’t get me wrong, I have the greatest respect for those who DID camp out with people shooting at them. It just wasn’t my preference.

Churchill was not an “alcohol abuser.” He sometimes “amused himself by allowing people to think he had a bottomless capacity.” He most often drank a small amount of whiskey mixed with water — one glass would last many hours. The cigars were mostly just a prop that he liked to handle and chew.

As for his painting, Wikipedia shows he did one painting during WWII:

Due to obvious time constraints, Churchill attempted only one painting during the Second World War. He completed the painting from the tower of the Villa Taylor in Marrakesh.[209]

In north Africa he rode on the last great British cavalry charge, sabers drawn, against the Mahdi army near Khartoum. (about then machine guns were invented and deployed)

In the Boer war, then a member of the press, he was imprisoned with captured British troops, and escaped, quite heroically.

In WW1, he led army troops at the front from the trenches.

    2) Obama has stated that his mission, his journey, is shared by all who’ve ever sought to “bring an Empire to its knees”.

I remember that day, 9/11/2001. I watched the horrific events that day, live on television, for hours on end, after the first and/or second aircraft struck the World Trade Center towers.

To my recollection the Bush haters had it wrong, as did the leftist, Bush hating press.

George W. Bush was not reading to the children that day. He was steated with the children, holding the same book that the children were using, following along as the children were reading the book, not George w. Bush.

I hated hearing the likes of the viole, mean spirited, hate filled bigot and hate moger, Bill Maher and his offensive guests, as well as other nuts, push that story as “Bush was so scared he did not know what to do, he sat their with a look on his face like a deer in the head lights, and he continued to read the book to the children.”

I know you aren’t one of them, based on the context and tone of y our message. You don’t present any animosity toward George W. Bush, and my comment is not intended as a criticism of you. I am merely stating that, as point of fact, it was the children who were reading to George W. Bush, or while President Bush listened, but George W. Bush was not actually the main reader, not reading to the children.

Bashir was also, and may still be, part of ABC’s Nightline.

    and speaking of Obama….

Watching him deliver his Libya press conference earlier today was nauseating. As he recounted the events in Libya, like we didn’t already know what happened, he spoke of…

    “…strong consequences…”

If Crazy Moammar didn’t comply with the “tough sanctions” of the UN res. 1973.

The whole world knows he played golf, picked teams and glad handed some celebs while the protesters in Libya got massacred. He thinks this tough talk involving the UN was “swift action by the US”.

He says Quadaffy must abide by the wishes of the citizens. Funny…. he should try doing the same for a change.

    He could start by leaving.

    We need “some entertainment”?????

Does Bashir suggest that the President of the United States is here to “entertain us”?

When I watched Bashir on occasion on NightLine, I sensed a tinge of liberalism in his stories and comments. This just settled the question for me.

And explicit example of the media covering for Obama’s incompetence, inaction and lack of ability to do his job.

Oh, you say he’s dead? He’s still as eligible as Obama.

I’m not sold on Barry’s kicking nicotine and how can he be shunning alcohol when he makes his own beer?
Bashir is a slobbering Obamaton with an English accent. Feckless too.

Well the thing is that Churchill was actually smart, and a British patriot. Meaning he has no need of a fawning press corps ( pronounced ‘coor’) to try to sell these ideas every stinking day. Did he make some mistakes…..you betcha. But he was always pro-British and he learned from his mistakes. I say this being of Irish heritage and Churchill was not concerned much with Irish sensitivities, he was pro-British. He left a clear record of his intelligence, no secrets. Obama is a young guy, still relatively inexperienced, he may still achieve greatness, but his record so far does not lead one to have high expectations in that regard.
