Stephen King Demands to Know Why He’s Not Paying More in Taxes

By Doug Powers  •  March 17, 2011 11:26 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

Who better to weigh in on the issue of nightmarish debt spending and the blood-curdling notion that a country can tax its way to prosperity than one of the masters of the horror genre?

In Florida recently, author Stephen King, out of concern for the well-being of the middle and lower classes, expressed a willingness to financially martyr himself when he said, “As a rich person, I pay 28 percent tax… what I want to ask you is, why am I not paying 50?” The crowd applauded in appreciation at King’s willingness to throw more of his income down the money hole never to be seen again without first asking themselves, “If he really wants to help the middle and lower classes, why doesn’t he start by giving his books away for free?”

If King’s not aware, he can pay 50 percent of his income to the government, thanks to the Treasury Department’s volunteer donations program that allows guilt-ridden rich liberals a way to relieve themselves of their soul-rotting cash burden (they rarely take advantage of it though).

There’s some criticism of elitist Tea Party candidates here as well. King prefers to support only blue-collar working class politicians like John Kerry:

I think we must have these wealthy liberals all wrong! THE REASON they don’t voluntarily submit more money to the Treasury, is because they already give so much to charities, they have little left over for themselves…(to spend on cars, Cristal, yachts, pro sports teams, luxury vacations, multiple homes (many of which are located outside the U.S.), and private jets.)

If they could be more compassionate, they would…it’s just easier to villify other rich people who DO give generously to charities (not the Soros kinds), and who have a different political philosophy.

The Dead Zone movie was very good, and I liked the TV miniseries of The Shining, but the rest of the attempts to put his stuff on screen have been mediocre to terrible. The Tommyknockers TV miniseries was a ghastly mangling of an excellent novel.

Remember Warren Buffet saying it’s not right or fair his secretary pays more in taxes than he does…well DUH! Warren, I wonder why that is. Maybe you could help the person out by having your tax accountants and attorneys do their taxes…wait a minute they don’t make enough to have worth while deductions…like some people, Warren.

As he has his vultures sitting in the wings waiting for family members who have suffered a family death and now have to come up with money to pay the death taxes. Just another hypocritical liberal.

Oh yeah, it’s a humble and modest bungalow suitable for the occasional getaway from Maine:

King’s Sarasota, Florida home which he purchased in April of 2001, is currently valued at approximately $10 million. Located on Casey Key, this home offers three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a swimming pool, and 6,817 square feet.

The REAL irony is that he goes on to say that he and his wife donate to their local fire department, library, etc. (I guess because he has so much left over after paying only 28%.) So why the HELL does he think that the government would be more effective in distributing his wealth?? He doesn’t even realize the idiocy of his comments. He PROVES that the real way to effect change is to provide support locally. And yes, to everyone else’s point, why doesn’t he just break out his checkbook if he has so much faith in the way our government (mal)functions??

I remember reading virtually exactly those same words ~25 years ago; that the only way to satisfy socialists’ extreme spending appetite is to raise taxes on everyone, especially the middle class.
All the rich together don’t have enough bucks for the marrow-sucking socialists.
Because there are so many wage earners in the middle class, that’s where the real money is for the statists/collectivists/socialists.

How is it possible that Stephen King is only paying 28% tax? I make a fraction of his income, yet I pay MUCH more than that.

My Federal income tax takes over 28% when you factor AMT in – and you don’t need to make that much to cross that line. Let’s call it 29%.

    My state takes another 6%.

My property and school tax is over 5% of my gross.

    Social Security takes 6%

Medicare another, what, 3%? Something like that.

So, just to own a home and be alive, I’m now at 49%.

Gas tax, sales tax, tax on my cell phone, etc.

    I’m WAY over 50%.

WHERE DO I SIGN TO ONLY PAY 28%?

    I’m WAY over 50%.

WHERE DO I SIGN TO ONLY PAY 28%?

And you only counted 9% of the 15.2% you are really paying (you have to include the half the employer pays, since your employer definitely counts it when he calculates how much he can pay you).

And I am in California, where I pay State income tax of 9.3% and rising, and we have a godawful sales tax, to boot.

    28%? 50%? More like +70%.

I’m so glad our wonderful leaders let me keep nearly 30% of what I make so I can still buy food and medical care and basic shelter and transportation. They are sooooo nice.

Oops. I forgot. There’s my share of that 1,600,000,000,000.00 the federal government is spending this year above what they’re already taxing me for.

As one of the hundred million taxpayers here, my share of this year’s deficit is about $16,000.00, so I guess I had to borrow the money I spent on food and shelter this year.

Oh, and did I mention I live in California? So I owe ‘my share’ of that ballooning promise to our wonderful public employees for their retirement gravy train.

But if I get angry about it all and start shaking my fist at the government and calling for a nonviolent revolution, I’m told I’m just a racist angry white male who should shut up and sit in the back of the bus while the maniacs keep robbing us blind and driving us straight off the cliff.
