Michigan State Police Put in Unnecessary Danger Due to Lansing Mayor’s Support of Union Protesters?

By Doug Powers  •  March 18, 2011 11:26 AM

Lansing, Michigan’s Mayor, Virg Bernero, recently lost (badly) in his bid to become governor of the state, which is now looking like even better news than it was back in November.

Bernero is a big time union backer — and now it’s being reported that he’s supporting the unions even at the apparent expense of siding with law breakers and possibly endangering state police officers:

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – There’s a controversy going on between Michigan State Police and Lansing Police.

The law enforcement agencies had made a deal that if back up was needed to control protesters, Lansing Police would step up.

However, when that call went out on Wednesday, no one showed up and state police troopers were left to deal with an unruly crowd by themselves.

Multiple credible sources tell Newschannel 3 that MSP had an agreement with Lansing Police for support in case things got out of hand. But when MSP needed help the most, Lansing Police left the capital.

Sources say it happened because Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero told the department that no protesters were to be arrested.

When protests at the capital got out of hand, state police started making arrests, but Lansing Police officers pulled away, making a dangerous situation worse.

According to the story, Bernero’s office has yet to confirm or deny the allegations, but it’s not like this kind of thing would be out of character for him.

On some days in some areas, John Adams’ “a government of laws and not of men” seems like such an antiquated ideal.

We have to be careful what “sources” say. We don’t know.

When was the last time you heard that the police stopped making arrests unless they were ordered not to? Yeah, thought so.

Generally agreements between political organizations have to be put into a memo of understanding (MOU) format outlining each agencies authority, limits and provisions for implementation.

I’m betting that regardless on whose orders, the Lansing police department either didn’t consider themselves subject to an MOU or someone failed to act as required under the MOU.

It’s pretty easy to determine if one was in place. I’m sure the State Police has a copy in it’s files.

This country is full of selfish idiots. I’m sick and tired of hearing about how Americans are the most generous people on earth (as the rest of the defunct planet is an admirable benchmark).

All you have to do is look at WI, MI, IN and now MD where mighty Martin O’Malley is asking ever-so politely for unions to pay more for their pensions.

This country has until 2012 to get its act together. If not, I’m going to push full boar for states in the West and Central Plains to secede.

We’ll just see how these costal and urban utopias work out on their own.

I have started to think that this country is already splitting into two Countries, socialist-democrat….and conservative. Id like that to be the case geographically. Ten years later the conservative side would be flourishing, while the Dem socialist side would start to look like a third world country.

My argument was they also have the biggest welfare class and the most lawyers. The conservative midwest would produce food, run the lawyers out and make our universities balance their philosophy. This would attract producers and doctors, and build up industry while the NE and west coast would socialize and sue each other into bankruptcy. I’m ready to split the country, and let people move where they want.

Let’s look at splitting the country in baseball terms.

They would likely get the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels, Mariners, Mets, Orioles, Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Nationals, A’s, Giants, and Padres.

We would likely get the Braves, Marlins, Rays, Cardinals, Royals, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Astros, Twins, and Brewers.

Not sure who would get the Indians, Blue Jays, Phillies, Pirates, Reds, and Rockies.

I would say give them the Blue Jays and we take the rest. That evens it out.

They might have most of the marquee teams at first, but those teams would stop buying up all the talent as they become free agents.

Besides, after a few years, we would have all 30 teams back because all the owners and players would be moving back to our country to avoid the 150% tax rate.

here’s my opinion and it applies to all giverment employees as it does in the private sector, you don’t show up for work on your assigned shift, you don’t do the job function you were hired to do, your butt is fired, now take that to the union. Fired police and fire depts. can be replaced temporarily by the Nation Guard until new hires can be put in place. I believe Reagan gave the air controllers 24 hours to show up, I’ll give the cops 15 minutes to show up at the capitol in Lansing and start arresting protesters or collect your blue slip.

These public safety service jobs cannot be subject to slow downs, sick outs and strikes period.

Mixed feelings here. Once this conservative supported police and other first responders. For decades, it’s been the left that spits on cops, calls them pigs, supports cop killers, etc. And yet, watching the antics of the Wisconsin police unions has made me question that support.

And now once again, we see police supporting the thugs instead of the law-abiding, or even their own. I’m sure there are many fine law enforcement officers, but until they police their own unions, the law-abiding citizens who have traditionally supported them will find their esteem for the profession falling lower and lower.
