Wanted: Buyer for Claire McCaskill’s Airplane

By Doug Powers  •  March 21, 2011 04:44 PM

Senator Claire McCaskill has been so busy promoting oversight and transparency in congressional travel that she forgot to practice it in her own life. Whoops:

Sen. Claire McCaskill is selling the personal plane that has caused her turbulence in recent weeks after POLITICO revealed she used taxpayer money to cover the cost of political travel.

The first-term Democrat said she was very happy she was able to convince her husband to “sell the damn plane.”

And it’s being reported today that the political travel problem wasn’t the full story. She also owes just a little bit in taxes:

In a conference call Monday afternoon, McCaskill revealed that after her own review of the plane’s records, she had not paid personal property taxes on the aircraft over the past four years.

“I have discovered that the personal property taxes on the plane have not been paid. There should have been a reporting to the county of the existence of this plane. There are people I could blame for this, but I know better. I take full responsibility,” McCaskill said to reporters, after revealing she had conducted her own audit of all 89 flights she had taken.

“This was a mistake, It should have been reported in Missouri. It will be paid in Missouri today,” she said.

McCaskill said she would be sending a check for $287,273 to St. Louis County Monday for the back taxes she owed between 2007 and 2010.

If she’d have taken John Kerry’s advice and kept the plane in Rhode Island this kind of thing might have been avoided. Okay, maybe not.

But don’t worry, taxpayers — this kind of thing has only strengthened McCaskill’s resolve to crack down on people like… well, like Claire McCaskill:

McCaskill has even made the unique argument that her own “embarrassing” mistake, as she’s called it, is just another reason to push for more openness in Washington.

If this turns out to be too much of a political embarrassment, McCaskill may leave the Democrats to run for re-election next year with the more populist “Rent on my plane is too damn high” party.

Update: Here’s a Craigslist ad for Air Claire. Heh.

And guess who is liable for large sums of taxes?

There are the elites and then there are us peasants.

I say that McCaskill should be ridiculed to death over this. But what in the world does a Missouri county personal property tax have to do with the IRS? Does the IRS have anything to do with the administration of the real estate taxes that you pay to your local county government? Don’t muddle McCaskill’s clear wrong with a bunch of blowhard nonsense.

That said, MO Republicans should be demanding copies of McCaskill’s tax returns for the years she’s had use of the plane. How did the arrangement get treated for income tax purposes? Was McCaskill paying rent or some invoice for use of the plane, which presumably is income to the entity that owns the plane and, in turn, probably ends up being taxed to McCaskill as an owner of that entity (reduced by deductions for depreciation, operating expenses, these personal property taxes). Or should the entity have been issuing McCaskill a W-2 or 1099 for the value of the use of the plane to her?

Now, that would have federal income tax implications in which the IRS should have some interest.

In non-political-speak, when you say “but”, it negates everything you’ve just said [e.g., "I don't mean to hurt you, but..."]. However, in political-speak, when a politician says “but”, it means “I’m about to tell a whopper of a lie, and what I really want you to remember is the first thing I said, not what I’m about to say.”

    HuffPo… you’re kidding, right ?

$287,273 in taxes is a far cry from a new ruling on taxing $17,000.00. Notice the HuffNPuff used .00 to make the amount look more ominous ?

Politicians will never change unless they are held accountable. We need a system similar to the UCMJ which can be used to keep them in line. For instance McCaskill should be the subject of NJP and the penalty, for her first offense, should be censure and election probation. Any additional infractions should mean dismissal and being barred from ever holding public office again. That would go a long way to draining the swamp. Of course there would have to be a Constitutional Amendment for that and the pols would never stand for being judged by “the little people.”

Political power and unfettered access are detrimental to nearly every politicians morals and ideals.

Please explain. My mistake in saying taxes ON 17k versus taxes OF 17k? I made a mistake and acknoweldged that after you pointed it out. I also acknowledge that it’s a far cry from Claire’s tax liability. The issue wasn’t amount owed, it was credibility that Sarah has on taxes after another poster brought her into the fray. Sarah took advantage of the citizens who pay taxes in Alaska. Obviously, not to the degree Clarie did.

Our tax code is confusing and often arcane enough without new rulings to complicate matters.

Unlike tax evading Dems, Palin asked for a review of the tax implications of the per diem she was claiming. It was concluded that it should be treated as income, and a revised W-2 form was submitted to reflect that.

Of course most people do everything they can, legally, to avoid paying taxes, but does anyone believe Claire would have asked for a review on her own to make sure she paid every cent of taxes due?

That settles that then. Taxes are far too complicated. The more expensive the property and higher income one has the more complicated it gets. Especially when more than one entity and multiple tax liabilities concerned.

She should be prosecuted for any violations of law; she has admitted to wrong-doing already, otherwise she wouldn’t have rushed to repay the treasury. *Questions:

She has supposedly reimbursed the treasury $88,000 for 89 trips on a private jet. Are these rounds trips? Even if they are not, is $989/trip the going rate for the use of a private jet for hire?

Methinks she is still trying to hoodwink the public. Still, I can’t blame her for not wanting to fly normal commercial airlines…she undoubtedly, would have been required to purchase two tickets per flight because of her width.

They got caught..she reviewed her records. We have no proof that the County or State initiated anything. All we know is ‘she checked her records’ and found the error.

? You think his trip, per day, cost the equivalent of a days worth of war? If it sounds ludicrious, it likely is.

    The tax code needs simplification.
    What’s the agenda here?
    Equivocation?
    Fair tax?

The agenda here is a tax code so simple even a Democrat would have a serious problem in wasting time to evade it. But the problem is one of politics own making – so much of everything in every way, shape or form taxable from the local level up to the federal with accompanying complicated rules and forms to boot.

Does any environmentalist have any idea how many trees have to die (or tons of recycled paper used) for all the tax related documents that have to be provided and submitted for complying with tax returns? Not to mention the huge cost of time and money expended for preparation.

Do you feel comfortable that Alaska taxpayers paid for her daughter’s separate hotel rooms when she attended functions that they weren’t invited to? She abused the system. Fact.

Oh, so now it’s from tax on per diem to her daughters motel rooms.

Thanks for answering my question that I’ve re-included.

That would be a horse of a different color. Why do many politicians have the belief that taxpayer money is their own political expense fund? And why do they not receive appropriate punishment for that behavior. Paying back the money when caught isn’t enough.

And by extension, Dear Claire hurried up and paid those said taxes before the State could investigate?? By the way, rumor has it the State is going to investigate dear Claire anyway, where there is a Tax Dodger there is a tax Dodger with more to hide.

I didn’t read that story..if true, that’s outrageous. I don’t have time to read every single article related to this issue. Thanks for bringing that information forward. That’s definitely a red flag.

BTW – Bill Maher (no surprise) used a vulgar misogynistic term to describe Palin, and shockingly (ok, not) NOW is silent about it. I can understand Palin being behind all evil in the world, like killing Mary Jo and lawyering up and keeping quiet about it, and boinking interns in the WH and all, but I never understood why she ran a gay whorehouse in Barney Frank’s home and kept it secret from him. Oh wait – she didn’t do those things? But every time a Dem commits a crime or indulges in moral turpitude, somehow Palin’s name comes up as a diversion…

Maher made his ridiculous comments on Friday night. Claire McCaskill’s tax issues came to light on Monday.

Unless you think they told Maher to make these comments in advance of this news…

The IRS should notify her of an impending audit today! Though the taxes owed are not the perview of the IRS, if she “forgets” some taxes then she probably forgets other taxes. really?

On March 16, 2011, McCaskill told reporters that she was “embarrassed” about revelations that her office had billed taxpayers for the senator’s use of a private airplane she co-owns with her husband

    (emphasis mine)

and then her response was (I’m reprinting it here to show the lunacy)

“The Missouri Republican Party is going to try to ride this horse as long as they can. They’re going to try to make this as big a deal as they can. Them filing the ethics complaint is about as surprising as the sun coming up.”
