Shhh: HHS grants more Obamacare waivers, considers new 2012-2013 scheme

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 4, 2011 10:01 AM

Back in September and October, when I first started hammering the Obamacare waiver issue, I commented:

Old promise: Everyone gets to keep their health insurance.

New promise: You can keep your health insurance…if you BEG hard enough for an Obamacare waiver.

Will only high-powered, politically connected corporations and Big Labor groups be spared? Where’s the transparency in how these decisions are being made?

To the first question, all signs have pointed to yes in the ensuing seven months.

To the second question, as usual, transparency is AWOL.

On Friday night, HHS quietly released another round of waiver information — picked up by The Hill. 128 new lucky winners will join 1,000 others in being exempted from the onerous, costly, private insurance-killing mandates that the rest of America is forced to follow:

The number of waivers the Obama administration has awarded for a provision of the year-old healthcare reform law grew by 128 in March.

With the new waivers, that means 1,168 businesses, insurers, unions and other organizations have received one-year exemptions from a healthcare reform provision requiring at least $750,000 in annual benefits.

The administration says the temporary waivers are granted to help stabilize the insurance market until a fuller package of reforms takes effect in 2014, but the growing number of waivers have exposed the White House to heavy criticism from Republican opponents of the law.

“The fact that over 1,000 waivers have been granted is a tacit admission that the healthcare law is fundamentally flawed,” said Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) last month. Upton is one of three House committee chairmen who has used new oversight powers to investigate the annual limit waivers.

The buried news: HHS is already plotting more waivers for 2012-2013…

HHS must still bridge the gap until 2014, when the mini-med plans will supposedly be phased out because consumers will be able to shop for affordable and quality coverage on new state-run insurance exchanges. HHS said it is now examining waivers options for 2012 and 2013.

The new numbers were posted on an HHS website Friday night without an announcement from the department. The 128 waivers added in March track closely to the 126 HHS awarded in February.

Let the pre-election favor-trading for future waivers begin.

Health Care is a state issue. Every state has a department of insurance. Nobody in the federal government has any jurisdiction over insurance.

The GOP isn’t any better. All the mantras about being able to purchase “across state lines” is specifically the reason it is a state issue.

New York is so expensive because of government mandates (not because they can’t buy over state lines). You can buy over state lines if you move to another state with different laws.

How would it be fair to people in Iowa who have low health care costs to have their health insurance premiums rise through the roof because New York residents want to save a few bucks and get their claims paid by Iowa?

The problem is that getting elected doesn’t require a special knowledge about things they are regulating. Insurance companies (and agents) are going to make bank. . . not because we aren’t regulated, but because we are.

Insurance companies only do what the government tells them. Gov says sell Med Advantage, they sell med advantage. Gov says sell regular supplements, they sell regular supplements, government says sell policies on an exchange, insurance companies do that.

Insurance companies regulate the price. Make a new regulation and the price goes up. Eliminate regulations and the price will go down because companies will have to compete.

As it stands, the people in the federal government who are elected are idiots. And that’s why there are so many problems.

For the record too, the mantra “wait until we get the exchanges up and going so you can see it work” is going to be equivalent to President Rudy Giuliani’s Florida strategy that must work because he’s so far ahead in the polls.

But we are too worried about gays (gay issues are a pointless waste of time – “gay people” are NOT oppressed in this country), Muslims, minorities, and Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq to make America better.

Comrade Obama and his ilk don’t award waivers because of impassioned begging. They award waivers to their cronies like SEIU, NEA, etc. Or to companies like MacDonalds to prevent bad FOX TV news when the skyrocketing costs to provide minimal insurance occur and are documented and presented to the people.
    ***
And the waivers are good for 1 year–just enough to get the good Comrade over the Nov. 2012 election. After that–the deluge! And ObamaCare is just the stalking horse for the real goal–driving out all private insurers and bringing on the socialist government single payer system.

it would lower costs in new york, because all the crazy mandates would be history. the tax payers of iowa do not cover insurance company claims, the insurance company does. also, if more people would buy insurance out of state, the new york state insurance companies would go out of business, or the state might need to change the mandates. competition never hurts anybody, except over priced competitiors.

When single payer healthcare eventually comes to fruition in the U.S., the special treatment afforded to certain groups over others will increase.

In communist Canada, if you are receiving disability payments from the government as a result of illness, the government will fast track you through the healthcare system in order to try and get you off the public purse. However, if you try to work through your illness and continue to hold your job, or if you are self employed and don’t qualify for workers compensation in the traditional sense, you have to wait behind those that are moved ahead of you. In essence, there is an incentive to stop working over working through the pain.

Also, police and fire fighters are fast tracked for some reason – guess it’s because of some perceived special requirement pertaining to their occupation.

Those in jail are also afforded faster care as making them wait as long as the general public apparently infringes on their rights as inmates.

Anyone who has a relative that works for a hospital also doesn’t wait as long, nor of course, do the hospital staff have to wait for any kind of treatment.

As private donations are accepted for equipment purchases at local hospitals, if you reside in a wealthy area that has many residents who donate to their local hospital, your wait times for treatment can be shorter as your local hospital will likely have an MRI machine over some hospitals that don’t have the money to buy needed equipment.
That’s right folks, some hospitals in relatively decent sized cities in Canada, don’t have MRI machines.

Furthermore, depending on the different incentives that provincial and local governments offer, some people will have an easier time finding a family physician than others, depending on where they live.

Politicians love this type of setup because they become the ultimate authority in an area that has almost inelastic demand. This affords the politicians immense power, and eventually, rewards them with economic benefits that they otherwise couldn’t generate if it weren’t for the system that is in place.

One day, Americans will be travelling to places like China and Vietnam in order to get the quality medical care that they need. They will listen to their grand parents tell stories about how America used to be and they will long for such a time period to return.

There are two issues that are most important in the next election:

    1. Size of government
    2. Repeal of Obamacare

If America doesn’t reduce the size of its government and if Obamacare is allowed to proceed, your phenomenal country will be destroyed.

Everyone thinks that the next election is about the economy, but that is wrong!!

The economy could ‘grow’ by 5% per year for the next 10 years, however, if you guys don’t shrink government and if such a massive, communist style healthcare system is allowed to be implemented, G.A.M.E. O.V.E.R.

One disappointing thing is Paul Ryan’s proposed budget cuts of only 4 trillion over the next ten years. With such a mindset, that means that Republicans, given the ideal conditions, are still proposing running 800 billion dollar deficits going forward.

Remember, deficits are delayed tax increases.

The idea of socialism dwells in the dark recesses of the mind of the perennially unhappy…a world where hope, and change cause man’s ego to devolve. Inprecise, chaotic thoughts materialize into evil machinations, feeding one’s hunger for power.

It is inevitable that the ObamaCare “machination” will end in chaos, and division. It was not well thought out, and was not created with the stated “good” intentions.

It is a devious deception which has been brought into the light. The question now is, will that light continue to burn brightly, or will perfidiousness and deceit snuff it out?

His glaring disconnect with what it means to be a part-time/casual employee only showcases the elitist attitude.

That’s because what workers get in these plans for their hard-earned money may actually put them at risk of going bankrupt or losing their homes if they get seriously sick or injured.

Dude, seriously, did you think the 18 y.o asking if “you want fries w/ that?” is in the market for a $300k home?

pre-existing conditions are not covered during the first six months, and employers offering the plan must have an annual turnover rate of 70 percent or more, so most of the workers don’t even stay on the payroll long enough to use their benefits

Yes, asking for a “commitment” of 6 mos. is asking a lot? ( Is Mr. Porter aware that you have to wait longer to participate in the typical employer’s 401K? ) Moreover, at age 18, the only “pre-existing condition” I had was ACNE! Jeez, Porter and Prince Krugman should just get a ROOM already!

I think one of the biggest scams is retirement accounts.

I don’t invest my earned money, I only invest by using a margin account(borrowed money invested into the stock market). This way, my current quality of life during my prime years isn’t affected by savings.

Anyways, I see many people who spend their entire lives working and saving and then in retirement, they become ill or otherwise relatively still in their old age. They are taught to save for the future but when that future arrives, they don’t reap the rewards of their sacrifice because they don’t have the physical capibility to do so. All their savings go to waste.

I also refused life insurance on my wife(now ex-wife) because I told her that if she died, I wouldn’t care about receiving or need the money as compensation for her death.

I drive an older vehicle and I don’t put collision on it so as to not waste money in this regard.

When I want to visit the dentist, I pay out of pocket and negotiate for cheaper prices instead of paying a monthly insurance fee. Dentists usally charge between 20 – 30% less for cash paying, non-insured customers.

When I travel to the U.S., I pay cash for medical care and I negotiate the same type of discount as I get with Canadian dentists.

I am travelling to China and Japan in a short while and I bought Chinese based medical insurance for 35 days – 5 million dollars worth of coverage – for $61 dollars.

Net message: think outside the box and you can go much further on the same amount of money.

But I must say, denouncing Ret. accts. is a BIG part of the Social Justice Agenda! It started thusly, Sigh… I’ll never have as much money as Bill Gates so.., what’s the point? Sigh…

Then what [predictably] comes next from The Left: “Wall Street is all just a big Ponzi Scheme anyway!” I -refuse- to invest in a damned Ponzi!

In excusing themselves to provide for their ‘own’ future, they are de-facto empowered by their own inaction. Seriously, by digging in their heels, the masses of unprepared retirees become a “public problem”.

I realize that is not where ‘you’ are coming from, but for altogether too many Americans, that’s become exactly the case. Sigh.., I guess “the government” will just have to figure something out?

Most on the right are scared of speaking out and want more than anything to be accepted by the general public regarding this issue. Call it the highschool ‘cool kids’ effect.

That’s true for some on the right, but I don’t think that’s true of either Michelle Malkin or Ed Morrissey.

They aren’t scared to speak out on any issue, and they don’t seek out the acceptance of the MSM.

The issue in this case is two-fold…

    1) They are accepting as “evidence” things that are NOT accepted as “acceptable documentation” by an I-9 form:

    A) A URL containing a JPG image of a supposed COLB.

    B) Newspaper birth announcements (there is a good reason why Newspaper birth announcements aren’t accepted by an I-9 form).

    C) News Releases from Dr. Fukino… the first of which did not say she had verified the COLB and did not say “Obama was born in Hawaii.” Dr. Fukino did not say “Obama was born in Hawaii” until after the U.S. House of Representatives said so FIRST, in H.Res.593. (By the way, no member of Congress ever inspected a hard copy birth certificate for Obama before voting on H.Res.593). It’s more than a little suspicious that Dr. Fukino issued a second News Release mere hours after the House vote in favor of H.Res.593… if that resolution wasn’t the “trigger” for her 2nd News Release, what was?!?

    2) Michelle and Ed are choosing to ignore the legitimate Constitutional issue of the Founder’s intent of the phrase “natural born citizen”. After significant historical research, I, and many others, are convinced that the Founders fully intended the Natural Law definition of “natural born citizen”, and by that standard Obama is not a natural born citizen because his father was a British subject and he admits that this made him a British subject at birth, as well.

    ——————————

It’s not fear or a desire for acceptance on the part of Michelle and Ed.

    It is:

    1) trusting things that should not be trusted (and are NOT acceptable documentation for the legally required I-9 form), and

    2) a lack of curiosity about what Michelle herself said “may be a seed of a legitimate constitutional issue to explore here“.

    ——————————
    Explore the legitimate constitutional issue.
And follow President Ronald Reagan’s advice: “Trust, but verify”.
    ——————————

    Support and defend:

    the Constitution
(Article II Section 1, and Section 3 of the 20th Amendment)

    - and –

    the Rule of Law
(including the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986).

Supporting and defending the Constitution and the Rule of Law makes one a “Constitutional Republican”, not a “birther”.

    Go Ahead, Call Us Crazy.

Rush revealed the ‘little’ $5 billion Obamacare hand-out written into the law to give money to big businesses like ATT, Verizon, GM, etc to cover health premiums for early retirees.

Under the program, employers can get reimbursed for up to 80 percent of the cost of medical claims between $15,000 and $90,000 for their early retirees. The government payments can be used to reduce premiums for retirees and their dependents, or by employers to keep their own costs in check. The benefit takes effect June 1.

Who are the big beneficiaries – BIG BUSINESS and UNIONS. Schmoozed by Obama to shut up while Obamacare was rammed down our throats; and WE get to pay for it!
