Brennan and the bin Laden story bungle
So Politico’s Josh Gerstein reports that White House officials are walking back key details disclosed by Deputy National Security Adviser John Brennan at his bin Laden briefing yesterday.
The administration account has now been “modified.” You know all that sensational stuff about bin Laden having a gun and using one of his wives as a human shield? Never mind:
The White House backed away Monday evening from key details in its narrative about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, including claims by senior U.S. officials that the Al Qaeda leader had a weapon and may have fired it during a gun battle with U.S. forces.
Officials also retreated from claims that one of bin Laden’s wives was killed in the raid and that bin Laden was using her as a human shield before she was shot by U.S. forces.
…At a Pentagon briefing earlier in the day, a senior defense official said bin Laden used a woman as a human shield so he could fire shots. “He was firing behind her,” the official said.
In another background briefing early Monday morning, a senior administration official also said bin Laden put up a fight. “He did resist the assault force. And he was killed in a firefight,” the official said.
However, during a background, off-camera briefing for television reporters later Monday, a senior White House official said bin Laden was not armed when he was killed, apparently by the U.S. raid team.
Another White House official familiar with the TV briefing confirmed the change to POLITICO, adding, “I’m not aware of him having a weapon.”
Why the changes? As the famous situation room photo shows, Brennan was in the room watching the raid video along with President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and others.
He probably disclosed more than he should have and it’s possible his betters were forced to walk back his comments for opsec reasons. What’s your best, good-faith guess?
Unfortunately, the discrepancies are going to be fodder for extremists on both sides of the political aisle. It’s a shame they couldn’t get their story straight and send out someone who had been fully briefed himself on the official narrative before briefing the rest of the world.

I was lucky, the boss(puppy) did leave a present this morning at the local temple of terror.
I find it bizarre OBL was at home with so little security. Most of the people rounded up at the compound were family members. Why did he feel so safe?

This is the most inept, bungling administration ever! They can’t even put together a cohesive story that everyone is briefed about so they know what to say to the press! Who are these people, anyway? And what are they smoking? Why didn’t they appoint ONE person to give the official statements and tell the other morons to shut up! Can we please elect ADULTS next time?

You didn’t think that this administration could release any information that was completely factual did you? If the facts don’t serve the desired narrative, change them.
There is also an “icky” backlash among the spineless and naive among us. Just about every MS report I’ve watched or heard ends with a “no need to provoke Muslims any more than we have, they might retaliate” statement or question.
Who knows what the truth is. But we are fighting a war where we are afraid that the enemy “might retaliate”. Yes, let’s find a way to kill the enemy that won’t upset them so much that they will retaliate. I have a better idea, kill as many of them as we can until they drop the “we welcome death” claims and start begging for mercy. Let’s WIN this thing. Stalemates are expensive and cost us our freedom.
Remember that the SitRoom was most likely listening to radio audio of transmissions from the team to an operations center somewhere.
They probably were not hearing the communications that the team were having amongst themselves, and I highly doubt that they were watching much video (although it’s slightly possible that one of the reserve helos was uplinking overhead video of the compound to satellite – but I doubt it).
So, some of the initial information might have been abbreviated, and some of the pictured observers might have inserted some of their own assumptions into their stories to reporters. Then, the reporters might have inserted some of their own assumptions in writing the story. High level military officers are usually good about only conveying EXACTLY what they hear and see, but civilian staffers often think they’re smart enough to fill in the blanks with their own assumptions.
I’m sure everyone here has played the game of telephone.
Here’s a novel idea – how about releasing the evidence? Didn’t anyone think to tape the live feed of the raid? It doesn’t have to be released to the media, but they could get a panel of independent analysts to take a look. He had a gun… He didn’t have a gun… He used a human shield… there was no shield… He was buried at sea… next they’ll have him walking on water…
Evidence always goes down better than hearsay and retractions.
….All I know is I take GREAT comfort in knowing the last person bin laden saw before he faded to black was a U.S. military special forces hero.
May God continue to protect these fine young men.

That’s what happens when you lie. You have to get your stories straight, and then make sure no one else trips up.
How much easier it would have been if only they just tell the truth in the first place.
I hope nobody thought of burdening the seal team with taping the raid. I hope nobody in Washington was tempted to dictate some stupid, needless requirement to their mission.

This crew is full of bloviating ego-maniacs who are each trying to spin the narrative to take credit for something. It’s a mad rush for the microphone. “Mine! Mine! Mine!”. Just listen to all of the “I ordered this” to the exclusion of anyone else that defined Obama’s official statement.
My view is that the first version is correct.
The Administrtion’s “clarificaiton” is somewhat disturbing, though. And taken together, the “new” version will only inflame the Jihadists.
One woman shot when she was being used as a human shield by Bin Laden, can now be viewed as fodder for the accusation that US Forces indiscriminately shoot women and children. Not going further with the clarificaiton to say whether she was armed only creates the resumption that she was not. Especially with this statement:

How many statements has this WH made over the last two years that have been pulled back, changed, “taken out of context”, or simply, “that’s not what I said”. For some reason, regressives actually think they can pull words back in, change them, and everyone will blindly believe the revised version. And sadly, many do! I may be proven wrong but AFAIK, OBL wasn’t actually proficient in the use of firearms. Let alone a marksman or sniper. Of the video footage I’ve seen, you can tell an instructor is just off camera telling him how to get the Safety off. IMHO
The “Fog of war & combat” coupled with the most amateurish group of “smartest-people-in-the-room” would yield nothing but inaccuracies.The mission went well, the results exemplary only because the team that actually carried it out on the ground are professionals. Now the only thing left to do is have group 1, the amateurs butcher the telling.
First story: intense firefight, Osama shooting at soldiers, using women and children as shields and shooting from behind them like the coward he is.
Second story: our soldiers shot an unarmed man who wanted to surrender, shot innocent, unarmed women and children that were no threat.

As far as Osama Bin Laden being unarmed–I see an AK-47 or its variants strapped on him or in his hands in most videos and photos. He must have thought he was pretty safe in Pakistan. With their government protecting him–and surrounded by big crowds that love his actions and think he is (was!) the Muslim George Washington.

Brennan is only in his position because he was responsible for “cleaning up” Obama’s passport files. The man who worked for his company and did the breaching of the passport files and was scheduled to meet with investigators about the breaching of the passport files was found dead in his car from a gunshot wound. Based on past performance, you have to be very gullible to believe anything that come out of this administration. The truth is not in their repertoire. Politicial expedience is all they know.
I’d be surprised if OBL was unarmed but there is reason to believe that he felt safe because he had lived there for six years and the compound was only a coupld of blocks away from Pakistan’s version of West Point. Clearly, he was being protected by the Pakistan government and prior to this mission, we had usually tipped off the ISI.
That is the key that changes everything going forward. It puts a different light on why we are in Afghanistan which might now be seen as an American base from which to pressure Pakistan. The Taliban have no affection (or respect) for Arabs or Pakistanis.
And quite saucily I might add.
The Taliban is a creation of the ISI (Paki Intelligence). They would not exist without the arming and training they received from Pakistan.

What part of “classified” is so difficult to understand. The details of the mission should remain classified. The only statement should have been “we killed him”. Piecemeal information of the mission that is enhanced and then walked back only displays an attempt to politicaly define a military mission’s execution that is palatable to everyone. War is ugly! War is violent! Those of us who have served do not put a happy face on it. Liberal spin does not change the fact.

I made these points yesterday on blogs and FB:
- Brennan was speaking a hundred miles an hour at the press briefing and coming off as cocky during the whole event.
- I wondered if the White Mosque realized that by saying UBL had gone down fighting our military, they unwittingly made him a martyr in the muslim world.
- Stating that the U.S. military essentially rushed through the ID process with UBL in order to provide him a muslim burial wouldn’t sit well with the American public, and it hasn’t.
To the point of UBL possilby being killed while unarmed, we know that ain’t going to sit well with muslims not to mention raise questions. If he was not armed, why kill him? You know that’s coming soon given this ‘clarification’.
Maybe this was Hillary’s first real rodeo.

Why? OBL was mythologized by his followers as being protected by Allah and so, untouchable. Now we find him living in luxurious safety, not in caves, calling on everyone else to die for his cause and gets killed using his wife as a shield. The more information that comes out proving that to be true, the more damage to the terrorists among their own ranks. Why should that be classified? We didn’t hush up D-Day or Hiroshima in WWII.

VP, there are WAY too many missing and “mysteriously disappeared” documents for this to be anything but a gigantic cover-up. And the press is aiding and abetting treason. I’ve wondered since hearing about this yesterday whether the muslim brotherhood might have felt that bin Laden had become more of a liability than an asset; and that they gave the word to their “office” in Pakistan to “give up” OBL.
In whatever way: e.g., passing/leaking info to informants/to American operatives; cutting back on/leaving a chink in bin Laden’s security/protection/secrecy.

Our modern Special Forces units, who cost millions of dollars to train to the highest levels, DO NOT go in on a mission WITHOUT some covert troops on the ground. There is ONLY one group who is purposely trained for this mission, and are THE experts in this…and it isn’t the SEALS.

The story is also being managed to shape the battlefield and deceive the enemy.
The politicians can do their thing, but the military and intelligence services have a war to win. If that involves lying and deception, so be it.

He feels dependent on America, and he confuses that feeling with love. He does not understand that when you love something, you defend it from the people who are always villifying it. When you love something, you give it the benefit of the doubt.
So, for instance, he is too thickheaded to comprehend those who claimed “America invaded Iraq for the oil” were America bashing and undermining our troops, and if he loves America, he should loathe and despise those people, while those who say Obama is attacking Libya “for European’s to get oil” are not attacking America at all. Just the opposite.
The left (Democrat Party) is filled with America haters and enablers of America haters. It really does not matter which kind Ilovepretending is, since neither kind of leftwing loon loves America.
I’ve just learned that, out of respect for islam, this is the official version of the story being released:
When the SEALs kicked in the door, OBL leaped to his feet, screamed a karate yell, and knocked out two SEALs with round kicks. As another SEAL was drawing a bead on OBL, he karate-chopped his rifle in two, then broke his jaw with a spinning-backfist. OBL then whipped out two sets of nunchucks, and in a flurry of karate yells and flying sticks, SEALs were getting knocked out just left and right. Then, as a cowardly SEAL was about to cold-bloodedly shoot his favorite wife, OBL courageously placed himself in front of her and took the bullet meant for her.

I wasn’t judging. I was responding to VPat’s comment pointing out that the ISI created the Taliban after I commented that the Taliban has no affection for Pakistan or Arabs. I should have added: “So what?”.

If I gave you a list of ten objectives, where would this one rank? You’re thinking like a patriot…a defender of freedom, NOT like a progressive. In a rational world, you would be right, and I whole-heartedly agree with you. But, in the mind of a “worlder,” the ONLY shaping of a battlefield is in a POLITICAL war against conservative values.
(1) We are scheduled to pull out of both theaters of operations, Iraq, and Afganistan, soon. (2) Libya has been labeled by this administration as an “un-war.” (3) The preferred method of attack is from protected aircraft, and the Predator/Reaper drones.
So, what battlefield , and what enemy are you addressing?
In my mind there’s only one battlefield in Obama’s near future, and it’s entirely political. Remember, his playbook is “Rules for Radicals,” not “The Art of War,” by Sun Tsu!
