The Rebuke in Dubuque: Gingrich’s Rocky Campaign Start Somehow Gets Even Rockier

By Doug Powers  •  May 16, 2011 10:34 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

At this pace I’m wondering if that by the end of the week Newt won’t be down in Palm Beach nursing Piña Coladas with Trump and Huckabee.

Newt Gingrich was in Iowa today and is paying the price for his comments on Meet the Press on Sunday. Here’s a transcript from The Blaze of Newt’s encounter with one unhappy customer:

Guy: Speaker Gingrich, what you just did to Paul Ryan is unforgivable.

Gingrich: I didn’t do anything to Paul Ryan!

Guy: Yes, you did. You undercut him and his allies in the house.

Gingrich: No, I…

Guy: You’re an embarrassment to our party.

Gingrich: I’m sorry you feel that way.

Guy: Why don’t you get out before you make a bigger fool of yourself.

The above conversation takes place starting at about 1:30 mark. Also watch for the “hastily thrown together” CYA video the Gingrich camp made after his Meet the Press appearance. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a campaign produce its own hostage tape:

(If the video isn’t working try here)

Newt’s got nowhere to go but up from here, right? Right?

Update: Here’s the short version of Charles Krauthammer’s take on Gingrich: Stick a fork in him, he’s done.

    If Obama gets reelected, Obamacare will stand, and we will have become Europe. The People will be enslaved to nationalized medical care. Anyone who gets ill and needs medical care will be totally dependent for their well being on the workings of the federal bureaucracy. Within 20 years the independence that made America exceptional will be totally erased.

    Obamacare has already been ruled unconstitutional, but no LOTE voter has any business using this to support a position in favor of LOTE voting. The Republicans have their own version of Oblahmacare, which isn’t any more legal or less bureaucratic.

    The independence that made America great has already been gone for the better part of a century. Our Republic is living on borrowed time as it is, never mind the borrowed money.

    Keep doing what you’ve always done, and you will keep getting what you’ve always got. Conservatives have long voted Republican for the very reasons you’ve cited, with nothing whatsoever to show for it. I don’t need any more evidence. I don’t need four years of John McBama to know they’re all really pursuing the same agenda. I allowed myself to be fooled long enough, and have learned from my mistakes.

    I often wonder what it will take for others to learn from theirs and mine.

    Yesterday, in a conversation, I had this reaction to the old saw that we have to run a Rino, someone who appeals to the “independents”, “center”, whatever.

    But, when have we ever run a conservative in the Republican party? Bush Sr and Jr are both RINOS, progressive Republicans. Reagan was conservative, but he was a reformed Democrat. And Reagan almost lost in the primary to Bush Sr because of the Republican elite, the same elite pushing Gingrich, Daniels, Huckleberry, etc.

    So, how ’bout we actually TRY a conservative for a change? The last time we tried it, we had 8 great years.

    They can’t give me an example of when we tried running an actual conservative and got beat.

    Considering that conservative Republicans like me fled the GOP years ago and that GOP registrations have plummeted from about 40% in 2004 to about 28-9% today, what makes the GOP believe that they have to go liberal to attract independents? Where do they think conservatives went? We didn’t like their liberalism when we were Republicans but now that we are independents, we will buy into “even more liberal”?

    That is why 2012 might very well be the last national election the GOP qualifies for. That’s what happened to the Whigs.

    Hey, maybe I’m all wet, but I think the search for great candidates has to start years before a run is generated. Instead, the RNC runs around courting existing “baggage,” and “albatrosses” that currently populate the Republican Party, believing that you have to go with what (or whom) you know. In so doing, they discount up and coming new faces in the political scene.

    Seriously, who wants to go through another decade with the current crop of Republican “potentials,” who’ve seen it all, and done it all. New blood and new ideas for an American renewal? The search for our future doesn’t start at the good ol’ boys club.

    Palin was ready… the interviewer’s objective was/is to make Palin or any Republican to look like a inept cretin. Which is the liberal media (redundancy alert!)game, I get that, while they never notice or ask a follow up question on anything stupid that Barry says or does.

    For example, here is an interview in which the phrase “you know” is used 29 times in a span of 30 minutes.
    Keep in mind that Barry was this incoherent in an interview with liberal Steve Kroft, who is clearly in the tank for the man …you know.

    Saying “you know” doesn’t make Obama stupid, either. I’m sorry for Palin that she couldn’t answer some simple questions.

    He’s not the best extemporaneous speaker. That’s clear. I wouldn’t say that means he’s not prepared. Being unable to answer a simple question would be unprepared. (Or maybe Palin was coached to be obtuse and not answer easy questions. I have no idea what her handlers told her).

    He’s most incoherent when he has to lie about or deflect away from his true positions on subjects in question. If you get him to speak freely on subjects for which he has a passion, I believe he can communicate quite clearly.

    We’ve had plenty of fun with the 57 states gaffe, but it was a slip of the tongue and everybody sees it as that and opposes him for matters of substance.

    By contrast, I had a co-worker who went on about how dumb Sarah Palin was. When asked why she thought that. She said, “Come on. She can see Russia from her house?” If a majority of the electorate makes an informed decision to take this country left, then that’s the will of the people. If they use ridicule and subterfuge to do it, that’s a coup.

    If you’re not a Republican anymore, then why do you care about how they choose their candidates? Generally speaking for any organization, when you forfeit your membership you also forfeit your right to have any say in how the organization is run, and give up your right to be taken seriously by the remaining members.

    Not to put too fine a point on it – You quit. Instead of trying to help fix the organization when it needed help, you turned your back and ran away – yet somehow, incredibly, you still become resentful when the organization doesn’t give you everything you want after you abandoned it.

    Your attitude is indistinguishable from the kid who quits the high school football team because the coach won’t take up on his advice for who should be in the starting lineup and what plays to run, but afterward still makes sure to show up for every home game so he can cat-call from the bleachers.

    You took the quitter’s easy way out. That strips you of even the patina of intellectual seriousness or moral authority to tell those who haven’t cut and run how they should do things or how they should think.

    If you want to go third party, then knock yourself out. You have a lot of work to do and not a lot of time to get your candidates fielded by November of 2012, time that you are wasting in your Ahab-like obsession with harpooning the great GOP whale.

    If you choose to come back to the Republican Party to try to make it better instead of just bitching about it because it wasn’t “worthy” of you, that’s another intellectually consistent choice.

    Either way. Just remember, when Thomas Paine was writing about “Sunshine Patriots and Summer Soldiers,” it was people like you he must have been thinking about: when you hook it off and run away in the face of the enemy, don’t expect your former comrades still in the firing line to have much sympathy for your desire to either have them run away with you or to make you General.

    And no, I don’ think it’s appropriate for a commentator/talking head to make disparaging remarks about the looks of a woman in public life. I think it’s mean-spirited and tacky. You’ll never see me do it; and I’m anonymous. That my opinion. But I’m not the language police, so if a personal insult about the looks of the First Lady gives you a “rush”, have at it. Unlike you, I won’t spend several days or weeks talking about it.

    I like your idea about reporting on government employees who blog on the clock. I’ll use the # myself, if I see anyone reveal themselves as a government worker. Great idea. :)

    @Major O

    We can go in circles all day, but despite numerous interviews at Fox News, I haven’t seen Obama, or any liberal, complain about “gotcha” questions, because they don’t like the way their answers turned out. It’s mostly a conservative trick. As far as Obama being held accoutable for his numerous policy flips; that’s a seperate issue from complaining about so-called “gotcha” questions. Clearly, Obama will have a lot of explaining to do when he starts doing interviews and debates for 2012.

    If that person managed to survive the backstabbing and the LMS and Dems’ savage onslaught on a groundswell of overwhelming popularity, then, and only then, the GOP would reluctantly ride the coattails of that success.

    Said it here, many times…
    Christie is a RINO!
    *******************

    * Christie’s budget passed only after three conservative Republicans were bullied into voting for it and the savings achieved in the budget were done at the expense of new taxes, new fees, federal Stimulus funds and accounting gimmicks; the 2% property tax cap will actually cause taxes to skyrocket; he has yet to propose the “across the board” tax cuts he promised as a candidate; the budget actually INCREASES state expenditures by 6% and the number of staff in the Governor’s office making $100,000 per year increases by ten.

    * His confrontation with the unions is pure Kabuki theater with nothing accomplished but acrimony; he has yet to lay off a single state employee and his proposed 2011 state worker reduction plan is little more than window dressing;

    * He has populated his cabinet with notorious liberals while firing the only true conservative – after slandering him;

    * He has endorsed notorious RINO candidates in the 2010 mid-term election while avoiding (with one notable exception) contact with conservative candidates;

    * He supports a multi-state Cap & Trade scheme known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and is so committed to Cap & Trade that he used funds raised from RGGI’s carbon auctions to help balance the budget; he has directed that state funds be appropriated to subsidize “green” technology ventures such as off-shore windmills;

    * He has refused to join other state attorneys-general in a joint lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare while accepting federal funds for the implementation of a similar program on a statewide level;

    * He is on record saying that he does not believe illegal aliens are here illegally; he has indicated that he supports amnesty for illegals; he generally favors strict gun control and he supports construction of the Ground Zero Mosque even as he condemns those who oppose it.

    That is why I have had it with Sean Hannity in being Rupert Murdoch, corporate, Shep Smith apologist, Juan Williams apologist and the biggest slobbering….

    When someone like Jerome Corsi, who has a proven record in the Swift Boat reality of John “i have a plan” Kerry in which Kerry got a Purple Heart of rice up his ass which was self inflicted, it is beneath professional Hannity to book Mr. Corsi and then cancel on him in the last minute.

    This kind of bulls#it hurts everything in undoing the Marxist attack by the globalist under Obama upon these United States. Hannity just gave aid and comfort to thee worst enemies of Americans and thee worst antagonist of America in protecting B. Hussein Obama.
    There is no excuse in this.

    Either Sean Hannity is a fraud. Either Sean Hannity is a spineless coward who would sell out Anne Frank. Either Sean Hannity is a low life who does not keep his word. It can be no other explanation.
    Sean Hannity gave his word to Jerome Corsi, who planned all his appearances in launching his Obama expose on Hannity’s program and Hannity then submarine’s Corsi.

    That is deliberate and is as Ann Coulter, Karl Rove and whatever else Obamites Hannity runs around with.

Stop doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. It’s not complicated. Try something else.

    It’s an old, tired, strawman. Folks that opposed Obama, are generally the same folks that oppose the Clintons. The pigment of Obama’s skin, doesn’t make them automatically racist. Nobody has ever been told: “Hey conservative, if you oppose Obama, you’re a racist.” Nor has it been implied. It’s a strawman…worse…a big fat lie.

    Accusing conservatives of being racist about Obama is all based on a game, and not about his agenda/policies: Occasionally a shady conservative uses coded language and selective outrage, to appeal to the the “low-lying”, bigoted fruit on their side, and then the MSM, or particularly MSNBC, overreacts, and call’s said conservative a racist. Said conservative then plays all dumb, like “what I say?”.

    This is rare. And it’s all just a stupid political game. Generally, the same folks that oppose Obama, are the same folks that would oppose ANY liberal.

    Nobody, and I do mean, nobody, from the conservative side, has been called a racist, simply for opposing Obama’s agenda. It’s a bunch of BS. It’s just typical rightwing embracing of victimhood.

The NotTheDemocrats are easier to spot, Daniels, Pawlenty, Huntsman. The conservatives left are Palin (who won’t run), Bachmann (who might), and Cain.

    Herman Cain represents the Tea Party’s best shot at removing The Usurper and taking over the GOP. The President, as head of the party, will be staffing the RNC. Removing the progressives from the GOP is vital. If that doesn’t happen, then the GOP should be Whigged. Bush also had the intelligence to listen to people instead of pretending to be the most intelligent person in the room (much like Al Gore). Intelligent people do more listening than talking.

    Then I would say that Bush could talk coherently on a topic without a TOTUS and he could answer questions without continually contradicting himself and without all the hemming and hawing and the You Knows.
