Any Republican candidate serious about trying to get the US out of a mess that’s been many years in the making and only getting worse is first and foremost going to have to stop doing the equivalent of standing in front of the ballpark yelling “a vote for me is a vote for free beer and hot dogs!”
From Real Clear Politics:
DES MOINES, Iowa — On his first trip back to the nation’s first voting state as a soon-to-be declared presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney reaffirmed his support for federal ethanol subsidies — an always important campaign issue in Iowa that figures to take on an even more central role in the divided GOP field.
“I support the subsidy of ethanol,” Romney told a potential voter after an event here was cut short by a fire alarm. “I believe ethanol is an important part of our energy solution in this country.”
Romney either actually supports the subsidy of ethanol, or doesn’t really believe it but is only saying so to appease Iowa voters, just like Al Gore admitted to doing when he subsequently said his support for ethanol subsidies was a mistake.
Previously, Tim Pawlenty was in Iowa and said the US needs to stop subsidizing ethanol. Many “pundits” consider that a self-imposed campaign death sentence, but 2012 might be the year that form of political suicide is a welcome — not to mention necessary — change.
Here’s the fire alarm going off during Romney’s Q & A in Des Moines. It’s tempting to assume this might be a foretelling bit of symbolism, but in fact the alarm only went off because some Democrats were in the kitchen cooking up another “Thanks Mitt” ad:
Update: As somebody on Twitter felt the need to remind me, no, Romney didn’t actually express support for cute puppies. I’ll try and make my metaphors for “easy sell” a little simpler in the future so the sarcasm-challenged can follow along. Just kidding, no I won’t.
