Jobless Rate Rises… Altogether Now… ‘Unexpectedly’; Updated With Pelosi Jobs Quote from 2006
**Written by Doug Powers
The only thing that can be expected with a large degree of confidence these days is poor economic data being reported as “unexpected.” The same holds true for yet another month:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Employment rose far less than expected in May to record its weakest reading since September, while the jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent as high energy prices and the effects of Japan’s earthquake bogged down the economy.
Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, with private employment rising 83,000, the least amount since June. Government payrolls dropped 29,000.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected payrolls to rise 150,000 and private hiring to increase 175,000 in May. The government revised employment figures for March and April to show 39,000 fewer jobs created than previously estimated.
As Jonah Goldberg wrote this morning, hey, this is the perfect time to make a green energy guy Commerce Secretary. No thanks.
In other news:
–People continue making “Weiner” jokes… unexpectedly
–Media following Sarah Palin’s bus tour… unexpectedly
–Administration to blame Bush for latest unexpected jobs report… unexpectedly
Update: Harry Reid “encouraged” by the jobs report… expectedly.
Update II: Nancy Pelosi in 2006:
Pelosi was not to be outdone, however, firing back at the president who she claimed had “the worst jobs record since the Great Depression,” in spite of Friday’s news that the October jobless rate fell to 4.4 percent, the lowest it has been in more than five years.
As for the new jobs report, at least Pelosi’s consistent, because she’s still blaming Republicans.
When do we get to that 500,000 new jobs a month plateau that Joe Biden predicted last year?

Yeah….but Obama got Bin Laden….I mean he has that goin for him doesn’t he? Let’s not forget that Obama had Bin Laden in….his….sights. Poor Urkel, nothing is going his way.
Hey O’Bummer, how’s that stimulus package working out for ya?
Boy you thinktankers really have thought this one out haven’t ya?
The private sector has nothing to do with creating jobs…..all done by big thinkers in D.C.
Go back to organizing your communities – you’re a disgrace as a supposed leader/President.

Only insane liberals would think that the path to recovery is borrowing from our grand kids and giving the money to federal employees, unions and other forms of moochers. I am still prepared to suffer along with everyone else until the idiots who elected Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the remaining Democrats come to the conclusion that we will NEVER have economic recovery until they are all out of office. Until then, let the bread lines form.
Our kids and grand kids don’t deserve the curse that has befallen them.
Ungrateful bitter clingers just can’t see the awesomeness of Dear Leader. Try being positive for a change! Think of your declining financial outlook future as a personal waiver from the ObamaCare mandate.
Report from Crook County
Many of the key people in Barry’s White House also hail from the Windy City including the man who replaced Emanuel as the Chief of Staff, Bill Daley (brother of Chicago’s former mayor) and Valerie Jarrett, one of Barry’s oldest friends and advisers.
This sort of bullying is not uncommon in Cook County, one of the last Democrat-run city machines in the nation (wags call it Crook County for a reason). One hand washes the other there and rules are bent to favor political allies — the seeming modus operandi of Barry O on a national scale over the last few years.

Why is it that the smartest people ever to hold office are always surprised and can’t seem to learn?
Well it is Friday so bho can leave a bit early for the week-end and get in his golfing! I would imagine that the msm will try to blame Bush for the horrible mess poor bho inherited. Sorry bho, you own it now, all by your skinny slimy self!

The effects of the Japanese earthquake hurt employment in May?? Darn those Japanese business owners for laying off all of those poor people in Kentucky.

the only thing unexpected, is with all the cooking of the books, they still can’t make the unemployment number go down. remember, he magically needs a unemployment of 8% or lower january first 2012. could you imagine what the unemployment number would be if they used the old calculations?

WOT but did anyone else notice a trend developing? Pawlenty declares his candidacy… tornados in MN. Rombama declares… tornados in MA. Just sayin’.
God save ANY economy run by academicians. Reading books has never, and will never be the same as venturing into the real world and working to accomplish a job. The lessons learned in schools are WHOLLY dependent on the teachers curriculum, and if that is based on stupid failed policies, then the student learns stupid failed policies. IF he had been out in the real world and had gone to his boss and asked for 50 billion dollars to subsidize solar power because his friend GE told him it was the energy of the future, the boss would have asked how long in the future. This is the basic real world question of RETURN ON INVESTMENT. Companies every day invest THEIR money into ventures where they project a good ROI. You can tell an idea is a stupid money loser when big companies like GE or Archer Daniels Midland or GM WON”T produce a product on their own WITHOUT GUBMINT SUBSIDIES. ECON 101.
Education 101 is that you can’t have the dumbest laziest people in the society teaching the next generation of geniuses. Our school teachers are sub 800 SAT score students with a degree which includes 1/2 their core degree requirements in Sociology/psychology. Are they teaching sociology? Yes. Are they supposed to be teaching reading writing math and science with a little geography and history thrown in so they know where Kansas is on a map and that the civil war was fought between 1861 and 1865. Yes. A sociology degree makes one qualified to be a 8 dollar an hour babysitter, or go into an advertising firm to invent warm and fuzzy phraseology to get politicians out of trouble.
I agree. They haven’t told the truth about anything, why should this be any different?
And yet, and YET…they go on TV and look right into the camera’s eye and say that Obama’s agenda works, and everything is getting better. One of these days…TV, meet skillet! They have no morals, no conscience, and an uncanny ability to pull stuff out of their arses.
Dear Lord, please don’t let Michele Bachmann declare her candidacy until tornado season is over!!

The biggest cooking of the books is how the U2 unemployment number drops out those who have been out of work for a long time. A bogus number–the real unemployment / underemployment number is probably around 18 percent.

Great job focusing like a laser on the economy, Comrade! You are vaporizing it into oblivion now as you “socialize” the U.S.A. What’s a little collateral damage between friends as you set up your dream of the new United Socialist States of Amerikka?

Just watch…somehow, an unemployment number below 8% will magically, unexpectedly hit right before the 2012 election. An October surprise! The numbers mean nothing. It is all an illusion from Big Brother. They can say anything they want and half of the people in this country will buy it. (with our money!)
That’s what happens when you look to Keynesians for your expectations.
Hurricane season began three days ago.
That means that something should blow this way from Africa.
Oh, wait, that already happened (Jan, 09).
were there any tonadoes in kenya when obama announced his re-election campaign, just sayin’
I’m guessing the two of us are safe. There’s no way Shwarzenegger or Crist will run.
That is why we need to tell everyone to ignore the numbers and look around for themselves.
When you are drowning do not believe the guy who tells you that you are on dry land.
They keep trying to do the same things over and over while expecting different results? Really? OBTW, I got a ‘bargain’ when I put gas in my truck this morning, only $3.94 a gallon.
Quandary;
Between Rocka and a hard place:
The headlines on Drudge say Great depression coming…(groan)
Future looks bleak,
BUT if one tries to rise above it and hope for good economy that would mean Obama would be re-elected……and his totalitarian government would continue unabated. So, should we hope that things stay miserable or hope they improve…
Like I said, it’s a dilemma.
Or how about this: “Great UN-expectations: How I fooled most of the people all of the time! (with forward by BJ Klintoon)”
LOL. Last Friday, our local paper, the Long Beach Press Telegram, headlined the great news that gas prices had decreased below $4 a gal….picture with story showed price on a gas station sign at $3.97.9/gal.
Whew! Crisis abated. We can now confidently carry on with our summer travel plans now the the Great and Mighty Obummer has lowered prices.
I have been unemployed for over a year now. Me and my family have been struggling, we moved halfway across the country looking for work and luckily my husband found a job. I was just informed by the Arizona Department of Economic Security that my unemployment payments will be cut off after 6/22/11 because:
“The Arizona unemployment rate has dropped to the extent that under state law (A.R.S. § 23-630.A.3(b)) the Extended Benefit (EB) Program will end with the week ending June 11, 2011. No EB weekly payments can be made for any weeks ending after that date, even if you have an EB balance remaining.”
It is good to know that employment is up!
This current administration is filled with spoiled dumb rich kids who majored in civil disobedience, affirmative action graduates and clueless academics. None of these people have done anything without someone paying their way. This group thinks that money fixes everything. When people don’t earn their way, they miss out on all the learning that comes with turning failure into success. These people have a disconnect between ideas and implementation. Some ideas will never work no matter how good they sound or how much is done to make them work. In an effort to install socialism, these clowns will end up destroying themselves.
Obummer will continue to say he got Osama Bin Laden… unexpectedly.
Do the employment numbers still include active armed forces personel? IIRC the Clinton admin included the military, which hadn’t before been considered as employment, in employment numbers to reduce the percentage of unemployment to make it look much better than it was.
Obama HAS to know he won’t be re-elected if we have 18 more months of decline in this country. He either doesn’t care because he intends to fulfill his plan before the election, or he knows he can suspend elections. People are waking up and even the morons know something is very very wrong here, although they would never admit it to one of us! Right, trolls??
Earth had better “unexpectedly” grow a new continent real fast in 2012 if that Inter-generational Thief in the White House is re-elected.
Yes, the Idiot American Electorate is stupid enough to retain this fraud.
And without a new continent for freedom lovers to run to, revolution (civil war) will be the only remaining option.
It worked just 200 short years ago; it will have to work again.
On the plus side, we lost 29,000 public sector jobs, taxpayers and consumers. Yay shrinking government.
And Doug: you are a hack. You cribbed one more thing (“unexpectedly”) from hotair. Give it up, already.
This is a perfect description of who we are dealing with. They are products of regressive American government schooling, teaching only the bad history of our country and not the good, and NOT teaching economics 101 because they don’t understand capitalism, only socialism. Except Obama…he is just a product of brainwashing by mooslums in Indonesia. Up to the age of 11 (I think), Obama had their mooslum, sharia, caliphate, Jew-hating mantras pounded into his very impressionable brain. That kind of stuff doesn’t just go away.
Slightly OT:
Ann Barnhardt summarily dismisses Marxist elitist RINO wh*re Willard “Mitt” Romney from the 2012 Presidential race.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXe3Kvg-qU&feature=player_embedded#at=36
And in 2013, BHO is going to find himself “unexpectedly” back in Chicago.
Ann could start by getting some of her facts straight, not that I think Romney is the guy.
One of the knocks against Romney was he banned the Boy Scouts from the 2002 Winter Olympics. Not true. They participated, but could not be full-fledged volunteers because of the 18-year-old minimum age restriction.
Mitt’s got enough to answer for by imposing a mandate that people buy insurance, and that ought to be sufficient without scratching around looking for tin-foil-hat conspiracies. Yeah, I’m talking about you Mormon-haters out there.

It WAS a bargain; I noticed the ppg at another station yesterday morning on my drive to work; $3.99. The same station had jacked up its price to $4.09 for the evening commute. Might be time to get a motorcycle again.
Um excuse me, Crr6 er RSS, you sure are knowledgeable about hotair where you troll but FYI unexpectedly is Barry’s middle name, everything he does fails therefore the bad results are unexpected, he’s an idiot, as Herman Cain says, With All Due Respect, Obama Couldn’t Run a Pizza Joint.
Carry on, Doug.
When Obama points his finger at everyone else for his failures, he still has three of his fingers pointing back at him. He still doesn’t get it and he never will.
We can only pray and hope for that kind of change.
I would expect that those are all local and state workers and not a single federal employee laid off. In fact federal jobs are the only growing sector of the economy!
You mean $4.09.9. for accuracy.
I’d be inclined to ride my bike to work if it wasn’t 20 miles one way, through some unsavory neighborhoods and contending with negligent drivers.
That’s the excuse I used to convince my wife I needed one.
Happy – #15 – I would certainly be willing to help pay to send you and your skillet to Washington to clean house! (both the White one and Congress). Both D’s and R’s would fear and feel the wrath of the skillet of doom!! I try to be positive but I’m not sure this country will survive until Nov. 2012.
Another reason why I love the fact that my decisions are unanimous – if I want a motorcyle I can get one. My commute would be rather hazardous seeing how I work in Detroit and would have to drive on I-75 through the city to get to my job. I certainly enjoyed riding my motorcycle when I was stationed in Key West, though.

Obama just about to spike the ball again on jobs at Chrysler plan. Should be interesting.
Nailed it!
Downside seems to be the inescapable fact that “we” may end up “going down, with THEIR sinking ship”….
Too bad our currency is being debased, as the gasoline prices indicate….
We NEED a stable currency!
That’s Chrysler planT.
I should be getting mine back this weekend from getting a ding in my tank fixed. The shop dinged it while they had it for maintenance.
I was not happy.
And he reserves the middle finger for the peons out in middle America who cling to their guns and religion. You know, the patriots in this country.

Obama Chrysler speech: “It’s Bush’s fault!”
Happyscrapper may need some assistance, as that would be one helluva ‘upper body workout’….
However, if she utilized a lighter/malleable (aluminum?) skillet; she could both solve-the-problem AND memorialize them….with a solid face-plant. (However, that would require about 600 skillets….)
Volunteers?
To be required school reading for all children and especially for residents of the soon to be established re-education camps nationwide.
Mission accomplished.
In that case, just remember that there are two kinds of motorcyclists in the world; those who have Harley-Davidsons, and those who wish they did.
What did you do in the Navy? I was an Air Traffic Controller, mostly in Norfolk, VA. A long time ago.
Doug, you are ignoring the fact that ALL of the jobs Bush created, and it was only a net of about 2 million, were government jobs. Private sector jobs declined under Bush. Bush took a federal budget that was in balance and triggered the current explosion of government expansion. Bush WAS a jobs killer… just like Obama.
Wrong:
That would have to be changed to: Administration to blame Bush for latest unextected jobs report…EXPECTEDLY.
Sorry. unexPected instead of unexTected
D@mn straight! Lemme see…29,000 PUBLIC sector employees being paid, say, 60,000 TAX PAYER DOLLARS per year that now don’t have to give 20,000 of the TAX PAYER DOLLARS in personal taxes back. Seems like a $40,000 win per “lost” public sector job for the tax payer to me…
Guess I will need to trade my 5 pound weights in for the big ones so I can bulk up for the job ahead!!
Them skillets is heavy!!

Imagine a group of people who have spent their lives in a rowboat theorizing how they would operate the Queeen Mary. They had never even seen the Queen Mary, much less been on board the ship.
So one day the stockholders put this group in charge of the ship. Any wonder why the ship cannot be kept steered on its course and all of the major operations on board the ship are breaking down.
These are not only socialists,; they are merely theorists with no practical experience in running anything. They have used our country as a giant petri dish to test their experiemnts in social engineering, social justice, and income redistribution.
When they were elected I told my wife what would happen in 18 months. I do not like to crow, but I was dead on. What we have right now was theoroughly predictable.
It’s a Disney movie. The kids are on the island, alone, with no adults.
Who cares about the U3 statistic. Show us the U6 which accurately reflects reality.
I bet that is up much higher.
Here is a little clarity on the situation as it stands:
“Tyler Durden over at Zero Hedge has just published a startling chart that shows how dismal the jobs numbers really are. According to him and his chart, “the simple math indicates that for the US to return to its December 2007 unemployment, when factoring in the natural growth of the labor force of 90k people a month, the economy will need to add 250k jobs a month for the next 66 months.”
The Sock Puppet, his Lap Dog Regime and most of all, the Lick Spittle Water Carriers that voted this Imbecile and his minions into office are directly responsible for the state of our nation as it stands today.
Think Chris Everet.
Better hope you’re not the fat kid.
And a couple of our fingers too.
Not to be the bearer of even worse news but remember those disastrous deficit prediction for the next 10 years (the ones that will bankrupt our country and turn us into a third world nation)? They were based on the rosy prediction of 3-4% annual growth. It will probably be less than 2% this year and more likely even less, even negative next year. Unless congress enacts hundreds of billions in real spending cuts now (which is hundreds of billions more than all the spending cuts promised actually enacted over the years) we will be looking at $2 TRILLION dollar deficits.
We are on a train headed for disaster and the conductor is a 4 year old thinking this is a toy choo-choo.
And your figures are inaccurate enough to be called a lie. While it’s true that total government employment increased by around 2 million, the vast majority of that was state and local. In addition, while total private employment did shown a overall decline from 2000 to 2008, in fact that reflects the results of one recession (declining employment from 2000 – 2003), then a huge increase in private sector jobs (around 8 million from mid-2003 thru 2007), followed by almost as large a decline resulting from the collapse of the financial markets – which could hardly be blamed entirely on Bush, given that he had two years of a Democrat Congress to deal with, and given the fact that the root causes of the crash were the results of Carter and Clinton Administration policies come home to roost. In fact, Federal employment has increased far more rapidly under Obama, even discounting the temporary census workers.
In addition, the reappearance of a deficit in the beginning of the Bush Administration was more as a result of the recession that began near the end of the Clinton Administration, rather than any policy he instituted – and even at that, the last deficit attributable the Republican Congress (to the wails and moans of the Democrat minority) was only about 260 billion. The really big deficits didn’t occur until the Democrats took over Congress, and they exploded under Obama – although they no longer seem to bother the Democrats.
ROTFLMAO
Question for you fellow Texan….are you including or not including the Transporation Security Administration as part of Homeland Security added under Bush starting in 2002?
No conclusions drawn here, just curiousity.

Not that RSS doesn’t know it, but “unexpectedly” has been a joke for a couple of years and you can find it used on any number of sites to mock the press passing along the talking points from the administration. Don’t know where the mockery originated, but I suppose it’s possible it was Hot Air — but if anybody was “cribbed” it was Reuters or the Associated Press for using the term so laughingly in the first place.
If it makes RSS feel better, the next time I write about a lousy jobs report, I’ll substitute the word “pillbug” for “unexpectedly” like this: “Latest report shows increase in jobless rate, PILLBUG”…
RSS
Hmmmm…let’s see: average public sector job pays nearly twice the private sector wage and public sector jobs 100% financed by taxpayer dollars. Figure an average of 20% public sector worker paycheck goes to government (unless you’re Tom Daschle or Tim Geithner), means taxpayers save 80%!
Glad to see you learning. Maybe we’ll have you voting GOP after all.
Cribbed? Are you kidding? EVERYONE’S been talking about it! Heck, Micheal Barone from the Washintgon Examiner wrote an article about it and Rush just mentioned it today!
Everyone knows the media is in the tank for Obama and they’re SHOCKED that the economy isn’t working because it was the utopia come true from all those fables learned in journalism school!
Please tell me you did not just use that teenage quote.
Keynesian economics DOES work, and they’re going to keep trying until it does (or we all die in the process).
Yeah, and George Allen said “macaca” – haven’t heard that one in a while, just thought it was nostalgia time.
Tom Freidman wrote of how the Chinese were the end all and be all of the world economy. Tom forgets that before Tienamin Sq in 1995 China was a 3rd world dump incapable of feeding itself. They had at least one leader smart enough to say this communism crap isn’t working. The sixty four million dollar question is do we have ONE democrat smart enough to do the same thing?
All these budget numbers, all these unemployment figures, all these stimulus and bailout monies, what do you think the average American believes. It is not rocket science to have an inkling that this country is not doing well economically. Why, you ask? Go back and read Flyoverman’s analogy at #63…that’s why.
The Headline that keeps on giving.
New jobless claims UNEXPECTEDLY rise to 427,000:
