Jobless Rate Rises… Altogether Now… ‘Unexpectedly’; Updated With Pelosi Jobs Quote from 2006

By Doug Powers  •  June 3, 2011 09:29 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

The only thing that can be expected with a large degree of confidence these days is poor economic data being reported as “unexpected.” The same holds true for yet another month:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Employment rose far less than expected in May to record its weakest reading since September, while the jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent as high energy prices and the effects of Japan’s earthquake bogged down the economy.

Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, with private employment rising 83,000, the least amount since June. Government payrolls dropped 29,000.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected payrolls to rise 150,000 and private hiring to increase 175,000 in May. The government revised employment figures for March and April to show 39,000 fewer jobs created than previously estimated.

As Jonah Goldberg wrote this morning, hey, this is the perfect time to make a green energy guy Commerce Secretary. No thanks.

In other news:

–People continue making “Weiner” jokes… unexpectedly
–Media following Sarah Palin’s bus tour… unexpectedly
–Administration to blame Bush for latest unexpected jobs report… unexpectedly

Update: Harry Reid “encouraged” by the jobs report… expectedly.

Update II: Nancy Pelosi in 2006:

Pelosi was not to be outdone, however, firing back at the president who she claimed had “the worst jobs record since the Great Depression,” in spite of Friday’s news that the October jobless rate fell to 4.4 percent, the lowest it has been in more than five years.

As for the new jobs report, at least Pelosi’s consistent, because she’s still blaming Republicans.

When do we get to that 500,000 new jobs a month plateau that Joe Biden predicted last year?

Only insane liberals would think that the path to recovery is borrowing from our grand kids and giving the money to federal employees, unions and other forms of moochers. I am still prepared to suffer along with everyone else until the idiots who elected Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the remaining Democrats come to the conclusion that we will NEVER have economic recovery until they are all out of office. Until then, let the bread lines form.

This sort of bullying is not uncommon in Cook County, one of the last Democrat-run city machines in the nation (wags call it Crook County for a reason). One hand washes the other there and rules are bent to favor political allies — the seeming modus operandi of Barry O on a national scale over the last few years.

God save ANY economy run by academicians. Reading books has never, and will never be the same as venturing into the real world and working to accomplish a job. The lessons learned in schools are WHOLLY dependent on the teachers curriculum, and if that is based on stupid failed policies, then the student learns stupid failed policies. IF he had been out in the real world and had gone to his boss and asked for 50 billion dollars to subsidize solar power because his friend GE told him it was the energy of the future, the boss would have asked how long in the future. This is the basic real world question of RETURN ON INVESTMENT. Companies every day invest THEIR money into ventures where they project a good ROI. You can tell an idea is a stupid money loser when big companies like GE or Archer Daniels Midland or GM WON”T produce a product on their own WITHOUT GUBMINT SUBSIDIES. ECON 101.
Education 101 is that you can’t have the dumbest laziest people in the society teaching the next generation of geniuses. Our school teachers are sub 800 SAT score students with a degree which includes 1/2 their core degree requirements in Sociology/psychology. Are they teaching sociology? Yes. Are they supposed to be teaching reading writing math and science with a little geography and history thrown in so they know where Kansas is on a map and that the civil war was fought between 1861 and 1865. Yes. A sociology degree makes one qualified to be a 8 dollar an hour babysitter, or go into an advertising firm to invent warm and fuzzy phraseology to get politicians out of trouble.

This is a perfect description of who we are dealing with. They are products of regressive American government schooling, teaching only the bad history of our country and not the good, and NOT teaching economics 101 because they don’t understand capitalism, only socialism. One of the knocks against Romney was he banned the Boy Scouts from the 2002 Winter Olympics. Not true. They participated, but could not be full-fledged volunteers because of the 18-year-old minimum age restriction.

Not to be the bearer of even worse news but remember those disastrous deficit prediction for the next 10 years (the ones that will bankrupt our country and turn us into a third world nation)? They were based on the rosy prediction of 3-4% annual growth. It will probably be less than 2% this year and more likely even less, even negative next year. Unless congress enacts hundreds of billions in real spending cuts now (which is hundreds of billions more than all the spending cuts promised actually enacted over the years) we will be looking at $2 TRILLION dollar deficits.

We are on a train headed for disaster and the conductor is a 4 year old thinking this is a toy choo-choo.

And your figures are inaccurate enough to be called a lie. While it’s true that total government employment increased by around 2 million, the vast majority of that was state and local. In addition, while total private employment did shown a overall decline from 2000 to 2008, in fact that reflects the results of one recession (declining employment from 2000 – 2003), then a huge increase in private sector jobs (around 8 million from mid-2003 thru 2007), followed by almost as large a decline resulting from the collapse of the financial markets – which could hardly be blamed entirely on Bush, given that he had two years of a Democrat Congress to deal with, and given the fact that the root causes of the crash were the results of Carter and Clinton Administration policies come home to roost. In fact, Federal employment has increased far more rapidly under Obama, even discounting the temporary census workers.

In addition, the reappearance of a deficit in the beginning of the Bush Administration was more as a result of the recession that began near the end of the Clinton Administration, rather than any policy he instituted – and even at that, the last deficit attributable the Republican Congress (to the wails and moans of the Democrat minority) was only about 260 billion. The really big deficits didn’t occur until the Democrats took over Congress, and they exploded under Obama – although they no longer seem to bother the Democrats.

Not that RSS doesn’t know it, but “unexpectedly” has been a joke for a couple of years and you can find it used on any number of sites to mock the press passing along the talking points from the administration. Don’t know where the mockery originated, but I suppose it’s possible it was Hot Air — but if anybody was “cribbed” it was Reuters or the Associated Press for using the term so laughingly in the first place.

If it makes RSS feel better, the next time I write about a lousy jobs report, I’ll substitute the word “pillbug” for “unexpectedly” like this: “Latest report shows increase in jobless rate, PILLBUG”…

Hmmmm…let’s see: average public sector job pays nearly twice the private sector wage and public sector jobs 100% financed by taxpayer dollars. Figure an average of 20% public sector worker paycheck goes to government (unless you’re Tom Daschle or Tim Geithner), means taxpayers save 80%!

    Yay shrinking government.
