Obama Forming New Commission to Cut Government Waste

By Doug Powers  •  June 13, 2011 02:10 PM

This could almost be a spin on a classic joke: How come the new five-member Commission to Cut Government Waste has a glass bottom boat? So they can see the old three-member Commission to Cut Government Waste.

An election must be on the horizon, because everybody’s noticing that the government’s getting too large and wasteful again. This means it’s time to make government a little bigger so they can determine how to make it smaller, then have everybody report to Sheriff Joe Biden. Yeah, that sounds about right:

President Barack Obama will announce new steps Monday to reduce government waste, arguing that inefficiency, fraud and abuse are especially troubling during tough economic times.

Obama was to sign an executive order creating the Campaign to Cut Government Waste. According to a draft of the order obtained by The Associated Press, Obama will call for a new oversight board to work with federal agencies to cut back on waste and improve their performance. The order also requires cabinet secretaries to hold regular meetings with Vice President Joe Biden to report progress.

Monday’s announcement comes as the White House grapples for ways to both boost sluggish economic growth and quell public anger over the mounting deficit.

Speaking of the deficit, what happened to that Simpson-Bowles “Deficit Reduction Commission”? For starters, they recommended things that would reduce the deficit, and if there’s anything Team Obama can’t stand, it’s a bureaucrat who takes his title way too seriously.

More:

In prepared remarks for Monday’s event, budget director Jacob Lew said wasting taxpayer dollars through inefficiency “is particularly offensive at a time of such fiscal challenges.”

Therefore, the administration is pledging from this point forward to only waste taxpayer dollars efficiently.

Just one of the stated goals of the Campaign to Cut Government Waste is to stop wasting money creating unnecessary web pages. You can read all about that on the Campaign to Cut Government Waste’s web page.

Here’s the launch video featuring President Obama and “nobody messes with Joe” Biden:

Neither side has the spine to do the right thing. Everyone is deferring everything until after the 2012 elections. We don’t have that much time.

The right thing? Start with not passing a bloated political stimulus bill of nearly a trillion dollars. Start with seriously reducing the deficit and paying down the national debt. Start with sending signals to the private sector that the public sector is not going to suck capital out of the economy and compete with them for precious loans. Start with serious reform with the entitlement programs. Start with not passing a sham of a health care bill that most people now want repealed.

Consider that budgets and spending have to be passed by both parts of the Legislative branch (House and Senate) as well as by the the Executive branch (President).

Consider which party has controlled the majority of those three parts.

Since January 2007, Democrats have held the majority.

In 2007 & 2008, Democrats controlled 2 of the 3 (House and Senate)

In 2009 & 2010, Democrats controlled all 3 (House, Senate, and Presidency)

In 2011, Democrats control 2 of the 3 (Senate and Presidency)

Obama did not “inherit” this economy. He has been involved in creating it since 2005 when he entered the Senate.

This recession started, and has continued, under DEMOCRATIC control during the last 4 and a half years. They have controlled 2 and 3 of the 3 involved parts (House, Senate, and Presidency) for that entire time.

Those who want to cut tax rates find support in the supply-side school of economics. The real intellectual firepower beneath the supply-side school comes from the Austrian economists, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek. They believed that wealth creation starts with entrepreneurial activity—new ideas for goods or services, new and more efficient production techniques and new technologies. Lower tax rates stimulate this activity by increasing incentives for saving, investment, risk taking, and work effort.

Those who oppose these supply-side tax cuts follow the teachings of John Maynard Keynes. Keynes earned his stripes in the Great Depression, when he said that consumers saved too much, and did not spend. Therefore, the government should spend and run a federal budget deficit. Keynes argued that demand-side stimulus, not supply-side stimulus is what an economy needs when it is down.

    Obama is a Keynesian.
