Robert Gibbs to Deliver Team Obama Response to Tonight’s GOP Debate

By Doug Powers  •  June 13, 2011 09:21 AM

Back in January, Michelle reminded us that Robert Gibbs was leaving the White House, but not leaving leaving. Starting tonight through late next year we’ll probably be seeing more of him than ever:

WASHINGTON (AP) – Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs will defend President Barack Obama in New Hampshire on Monday, countering criticism at a Republican presidential debate in the nation’s first primary state.

Campaign officials said Gibbs will appear in network and local affiliate television interviews connected to the debate, an early forum for the Republican presidential field. Obama’s stewardship of the economy, reform of the nation’s health care system and handling of wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya are all expected to draw fire from the Republican field.

In the next 17 months, Mr. Fibbs… er, I mean Gibbs… will be tagging the GOP field around the early primary states like that guy in Happy Gilmore who a rival golfer hired to follow Happy around the course and yell “jackass” during his backswing.

But both sides say the golf outing is purely a social occasion, a good chance to get to know each other and reach across the partisan divide.

That “partisan divide” is a moat filled with alligators. Cross at your own peril.

Trained to recognize and attack Republicans….and just to be on the safe side, the Dems never cross it themselves.

I think that you will get your wish. The government has been printing money like crazy in order to spark a recovery but with no luck. The government is reaching the point where it cannot print any more money without disastrous results like we have seen in Zimbabwe but that is the only thing that it knows how to do and it will do it despite saying that it won’t. That will be the death knell for our limping-on-crutches economy. Obama will blame Congress, Congress will blame Obama, and a great many taxpayers will be left holding the empty bag.

Partisan divide? They should be forced to listen to all of Obama and his minions speeches where he likens Republicans to racists and warmongers, who need to get in the back seat of the car, and who support evil corrupt corporations, and want to push Granny over the cliff in her wheelchair. How we hate Mexicans who come here to find a better way of life and want all old people to die. Etc etc.

Then ask themselves how they could ever bridge a divide when Obama and the Dems make such horrific personal statements about them. These attacks are over the top of polite courteous discourse.

When someone says I want old people to die and that I am a racist, then wants to shake my hand to “find a compromise”, I do not accept that hand. I spit on it.

We can start with him not letting some of the candidates finish their answers and then asking stupid questions like who do you prefer, Leno or Conan? What does that have to do with the main issues that are a strain to the country right now? This isn’t a joke.

They ask like 1 stupid question per debate, regardless of Democrat/Republican/FoxNews/CNN.

And politicians are good at talking. They enjoy hearing themselves. So he told them (even before the debate) that we want to keep things brief so they can get to more questions. That’s not ‘bias.’

The RNC responded to Dem party debates in 2007-2008, and vice versa (just brief statements, if I recall). It does seem like a funny thing to do, though.

I think Romney will be it…unless someone else comes in and destroys him. I am scared because of Romneycare. That could really give talking points to Obama! We need to avoid those obvious “gifts” to the regressives!

It’s way to early to give up, although he is now the real frontrunner, not just the presumptive frontrunner.

Bachmann was a bit too green, but it was her first rodeo, so hopefully she’ll sharpen.

I think Cain is 100% correct about not hiring Muslims to be part of the government that has power over us (their loyalty is to the Koran, not to the Constitution, and there is nothing in the Koran even remotely equivalent to Romans 13, telling Muslims to submit to the ruler without regard to the ruler’s religion …. quite the opposite), but I also think there’s no question he shouldn’t have said so, and he realized it but has no easy way to back off.

Pawlenty got hurt with the ObamneyCare thing. Otherwise I would have thought he was the winner.

Gingrich and Santorum both did well, but I doubt it can get either of them out of the probability cellar at Intrade.

Paul was Paul. If he could grasp the importance of conveying the message that the problem with America being so militarily engaged in the World is with the World, not with America, he might be a threat, if he wasn’t so old.

So that leaves Romney the winner of the debate. And Perry.

Perry and Huntsman should be in the next debate (if they enter), so there might be some serious attempts to take down Romney. So it should be more interesting.

I consider Perry and Huntsman in the same category as Romney. They just all strike me as being similar, and very very different from the rest of the candidates. None of those three are totally conservative, like Santorum, Bachmann and Cain are. Ron Paul is in a category by himself (crazy/brilliant/unelectable) Newt…Not. Pawlenty is also in kind of his own category…Too nice, and fighting is not in his dna.

So…..We still have an issue with any of them standing out over the others.

He may be just biding his time until Perry and/or Huntsman get in. He knows they know they’ll have to take out Romney. So, for now, Pawlenty is promoting his own ‘reasonableness’ …. which is why the ObamneyCare thing hurt him. Trying to seem unoffensive without backing down made him look confused, like he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

He tried to paint Herman Cain as some anti-Muslim bigot. And he tried to cut off the candidates several times, not that they are used to that from a masked liberal “moderator”.

And if someone from FOX NEWS tried to portray Obama as a racist or anti-Muslim, you’d just shrug it off quietly, I’m sure.

The issue here is that republican voter registration is at a several-month high and Team Obama/Biden is slipping in the polls. So naturally, you’re side has to manuever on the defensive.
