Obama: If We Don’t Get a Deal, I Can’t Guarantee We’ll Be Sending Out Social Security Checks on August 3rd

He could have said something like “If a deal isn’t made there will of course be a problem paying for Social Security in the long term, but in the short term I have many options as far as shuffling dollars around to fund high priorities, so I can say with confidence that Americans who depend on Social Security will still get their checks for the foreseeable future while we sort this out.” But Obama didn’t say that.
From CBS News by way of Snapped Shot:
President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.
“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.
I haven’t seen the full interview, but I’m just guessing that Pelley aggressively followed up with, “Mmm hmm…”
Regardless of what happens with the debt ceiling deal, if Social Security checks don’t get sent out next month, it will be the decision of the Obama administration to not put Social Security toward the top of their list of priorities (I thought it was the GOP who wanted to starve seniors and push them off cliffs).
Hopefully Social Security recipients are familiar with chess, because they’re now officially pawns in the president’s debt ceiling game.

Are you saying that we must increase the debt limit each year so that we can pay SS and the other entitlement programs?
Aren’t you going through an exercise to prioritize funds in case the debt limit isn’t raised? Aren’t you doing this now and what is the progress?
If we have to increase the debt limit each year so as to pay for the entitlement programs, how are we ever going to get our financial ship in order?

Wow, that Scott Pelley knew to ask a question that would deliver a provocative response that should scare every senior citizen into calling their Congressman and demanding they capitulate to Obama.

Marco Rubio had a great response to that on Rush today. to paraphrase what he said: seniors should be asking the President why can’t he gurantee their checks seeing that the American taxpayer has never stopped paying social security taxes.
Rubio also pointed out that the Senate Republicans have crafted a bill that would priortize payments if the debt ceiling is not raised, but admited he doubt that Reid would allow it to come to the floor.
No checks on August 3rd. Impeachment on August 4th.

Tomorrow morning the GOP should announce they are submitting legislation called the “Preservation of Social Security and Healthcare Act.”
To keep Presidents and politicians from using Social Security and Medicare/medicaid as instruments of extortion, this act would establish separate accounts for these programs as it existed for Social Security prior to 1967.
LBJ and the Democrat Congress rolled these into the General Fund to pay for the Great Society and Vietnam. They stole the money. Lets take this threat from Obama and use it to correct an old injustice.

The R’s should definitely submit this legislation and bring it to an immediate vote. The legislation would prioritize social security payments in the event that new debt isn’t authorized. Would D’s vote against this, or would Obama veto it?
I say the GOP call his bluff and if Obama does in fact stop the payments then the GOP should release a list of who the Obama did pay with what money was left after the debt was serviced. After all it is up to the administration to priortize what is paid and what is not.
This guy is just vile to scare people like this now. First there is a law that SS checks will be provided to all on SS. Second there is enough in the fund to pay. Third debts will be paid we have enough coming in to pay the priority spending i.e military, ss, ssi, etc.

Let’s see how bad it would be to live within the current debt ceiling.
As I understand it, if the debt ceiling is not raised, the federal government cannot borrow any more money. That should mean it can only spend only what it raises in revenue. But what would that mean? Would the federal government have to default (stop making interest payments on its existing debt)? Would Social Security checks have to be cut? How big are the cuts we are talking about?
For budget numbers, I will use Office of Management and Budget estimates (see Table 1.1 for total revenue and Table 3.2 for spending by function and subfunction.). By the time the debt ceiling is reached, most of Fiscal Year 2011 will be behind us. FY 2012 starts October 1. So I will use FY 2012 numbers to guide this exercise.
OMB estimates FY 2012 revenues to be $2.6 trillion. So if the debt ceiling is not raised, the federal government would have to get by on that for the year. That is more than the federal government spent in any year prior to 2006.
But OMB estimates 2012 spending to be $3.7 trillion, or $1.1 trillion more than revenues then. Somehow, spending would have to be “cut” (from the expected levels) by 29.5%.
To avoid default, interest payments would have to be made. OMB expects them to be $243 billion in 2012. That would leave $2.4 trillion for everything else.

Exactly. If the debt ceiling is not raised then it is up to the Obama administration, via the treasury dept (hence little Timmy’s nervousness), to priortize spending. To avoid default the debt would have to be serviced first (i.e. making interest payments). Whatever is left over would be availabe to pay for whatever the administration deems important. So, if SS checks do not go out, it would be because the Obama administration decided that it was not the top priority after servicing the debt.
This is why the GOP needs to call Obama on his bluff. If Obama decides not to pay SS then it will have been his decision. At that point, the GOP should release a list of what was paid after servicing the debt. This would show the American public just what Obama decided was more important to pay instead of paying SS.
Perhaps a pay raise for members of Congress could be worked into the budget.

When I called Murray’s office today and said I did NOT want the debt ceiling raised, the little twit on the phone said “Oh, so you would rather that the United States of America default on its obligations?” I explained to him very carefully and slowly, using only little words, that we could actually pay all of our obligations without raising the debt ceiling if we would cut out all of the stupid social programs and pork projects so beloved by his party. He sounded very confused (I’m assuming this had never occurred to him) and thanked me for my call.

What I find curious about posters like retireopo and ModeratelySuncessfulDem is their utter failure to grasp who they are in bed with. Today Obama threatened every retried person dependent on Social Security and their families. You can say it was a “scare tactic,” but it was also a veiled threat.
I ask our liberal posters this; if Obama stays in office and his power grows, what do you think his government will do to you the day you dare to protest one of his policies or he and his henchmen determine that you are no longer an asset to the State?
